I'm not worried by how much I drink, but by HOW I drink.

I think I might be at the start of a slippery slope.

I have never drunk much as have a low tolerance. I drink maybe a bottle of wine a week, two max. No spirits at all.

But when I drink, I pour half a bottle into a tumbler and down it rather than sipping.

AIBU to think this is not normal?

That's v strange, particularly with wine. It can't be enjoyable.

YarkYark · 16/02/2025 11:48

Beer: normal

Wine: sometimes normal.

Spirits: Call the medics!

coldscottishmum · 16/02/2025 11:48

Wine is quite strong. Do you have a habit of downing drinks - I mean like juice/water too? Or just with wine?

biscuitsandbooks · 16/02/2025 11:48

Maybe you have low tolerance because you down it like water? 🤔

yassos · 16/02/2025 11:49

What do you drink FOR?

If you feel uneasy, that’s likely to be a good indicator that you’re not drinking in a healthy way (if there is such a thing – it’s not really very good for you! But nowadays, for e.g. I have a glass of wine with a meal, enjoy it, and don’t feel compelled to drink more. That doesn’t feel worrying to me)

PinkyFlamingo · 16/02/2025 11:49

Why do you do this?

delvar · 16/02/2025 11:49

What does it feel like when you come up for air? 😉

3LittleFishes · 16/02/2025 11:50

Sorry to ask the obvious question but why don't you poor a small amount into a wine glass and consciously sit down and sip it?

I do this with every drink since I was a child.

AnSolas · 16/02/2025 11:50

You are drinking to get drunk not due to enjoyment of the taste or the social aspect.

So yea imo you have a problem as you are buzz seeking at least once a week

custardpyjamas · 16/02/2025 11:50

Are you thirsty, are you drinking it like that as if it's water? Or is it deliberately drinking wine like that?

Pour smaller glasses if you know you are going to down it and wait a while before pouring another.

exitstrategyideas · 16/02/2025 11:51

I think anyone who downs drinks (unless you’re at a frat party and 21) probably has a drink problem, and I say that as someone who loves beer and wine!!

Beer - yes you might not ‘sip’ it as such, but you definitely wouldn’t down it.

Wine - it’s for sipping; it’s a long drink

If you’re drinking like that, you’re drinking for the effect rather than the taste. I also think 1-2 bottles to yourself a week is a fair amount, particularly if you’re not sipping it with dinner

graceinspace999 · 16/02/2025 11:51

You must have a strong stomach!!!
I would throw up.

No I don’t think downing wine in one go is good. I don’t understand why you do it.

An alcoholic might do that after a short period of abstinence to ‘bring up the levels’ but it doesn’t sound like that.

Maybe swap out the wine for a low alcohol beer?

If you’re still swigging that in one go then maybe talk to a counsellor who specifically supports people living with addiction.

yassos · 16/02/2025 11:51

Also, two bottles of wine a week is actually quite a lot. Especially if you’re basically just downing them.

Uplanded · 16/02/2025 11:52

Good point re drinking like water - yes, I do that.

OP posts:
ComtesseDeSpair · 16/02/2025 11:53

Why do you do this? Are you trying to get drunk as quickly as possible? That’s a bit problematic, yes.

I can sometimes lightning through a half of light cold beer on a hot summer day at the end of a long bicycle ride etc - but a tumbler of wine in one go just isn’t pleasant. If you aren’t trying to get drunk, every time you have an alcoholic drink can you pour yourself a soft drink at the same time?

Onceachunkymonkey · 16/02/2025 11:54

That’s incredibly odd behaviour. Are you drinking to get a buzz on, so it’s not about enjoying a glass of wine, it’s about getting it down you as quickly as possible. I’ve never seen anyone behave like that.

Onceachunkymonkey · 16/02/2025 11:55

Iloveeverycat · 16/02/2025 11:50

I do this with every drink since I was a child.

So you can’t go out for a drink with friends, you literally neck it?

PoppyBaxter · 16/02/2025 12:00

That's not healthy OP. Why a tumbler? Why not a nice wine glass? I know that's an odd question, but the nice glass for me is part of a nice experience where I take my time with a glass of wine and savour the taste and the moment.
What are you drinking for? For the taste? Or to numb yourself?

thegrumpusch · 16/02/2025 12:08

Is that... enjoyable for you?!

coldscottishmum · 16/02/2025 12:36

Iloveeverycat · 16/02/2025 11:50

I do this with every drink since I was a child.

it sounds like just a force of habit OP. Try pacing yourself - if I drink any sort of alcohol I have a special glass, so I remember to pace myself! I drink juice/water quick too - think it’s my kids that have forced that habit though lol.

BlueMum16 · 16/02/2025 12:43

Are you downing it because you don't like the taste or are rushed for time or secret drinking?

I think drinking in this way does indicate an issue.

3luckystars · 16/02/2025 12:45

Do you actually like it?

BleachedJumper · 16/02/2025 12:51

Do other people see you drinking like this? Or is it done in secret?

Pigeonlives · 16/02/2025 13:01

So what is it that worries you about drinking it so fast ?
