I'm not worried by how much I drink, but by HOW I drink.

I think I might be at the start of a slippery slope.

I have never drunk much as have a low tolerance. I drink maybe a bottle of wine a week, two max. No spirits at all.

But when I drink, I pour half a bottle into a tumbler and down it rather than sipping.

AIBU to think this is not normal?

Im going to stop or at least slow down as the comments about alcoholism have worried me.

To answer some of the questions,

  • no I don't particularly enjoy the taste (decent white)
  • I do it in the kitchen while cooking tea
  • yes I get a buzz from it
  • when I'm out with friends I mostly drive so no drinking

It's not in secret as I don't hide away but also have young teens and would not want them to copy. Which I suppose says it all.

Ok, so yes, that’s weird. You don’t even like it and you do it when you’re alone, not in a social setting in order to get the buzz.

I’m not judging, I’ve been known to have a glass of something to take the edge off a trying day.

But at least have a glass of something you like. Maybe a nice, strong cocktail? I quite like a Margarita at 6pm on a Friday. Only need the one short drink to feel instantly relaxed. Or an Old Fashioned? There’s no need to chug white wine you don’t like!

ChancesAreLow · 16/02/2025 18:57

I do this, but with brandy and rum - I have to forcibly slow myself down.

I enjoy the taste but it's also about the buzz, it's the only thing that helps after a stressful day.

I can easily not drink, and I don't drink a lot, but I definitely guzzle.

I recognise that's not good.

I’m a quick drinker!
in a pint glass I would pour half red wine and half coke ( don’t knock it until you try it 🤣 ) and drink it fairly quickly, not literally down it in a couple of guzzles though!
Ive not had a drink recently as I can either take it or leave it!

That has to be one of the most disgusting things I’ve heard of someone drinking! What on earth gave you the idea of mixing coke and red wine?!?!

Apparently it’s a thing in some countries. I presume it was off the back of something like sangria so I’m eyeing up the med.

gamerchick · 16/02/2025 19:18

Well you probably would think you had a low tolerance if you downed half a bottle of wine at once like. I'd be pissed off that.

Lyracappul · 16/02/2025 19:25

I’m a guzzler and avoid wine for that reason.. I drink fruity ciders or anything less than 4 percent.. just swop drinks and keep off wine.. a bottle of wine can have up to 9 pints or 18 units in it

SquawkerTexasRanger · 16/02/2025 19:43

Are you thirsty when you are downing the wine? Try downing a glass of water first then you might sip the wine

I think the point is she’s doing it to get the buzz fast. It’s on purpose.

Hi OP, I'm an alcoholic in recovery and it's definitely how I used to drink (although I rarely bothered with a glass) but the quantities that you drink indicate that you're able to stop. I'd just be conscious of how much you're drinking on a weekly basis - if it's a bottle or two then not a serious problem; alcoholism (and I'm not suggesting it's that) is progressive.

howsoonis · 16/02/2025 20:11

Also a former alcoholic in recovery - I always drank really fast as the aim was purely to get drunk - not to savour the wine. I have never seen the point of having a drink - I drank for the effect. In my circle / profession going on wine courses/ vineyard tours etc was normal . Now I no longer drink I have had one person comment that back when we used to go for after work drinks she noticed how fast I drank.

I'd say most people drink for the effect but you are asking because you are aware it is an issue/ has potential to tip over into one,

Have you tried it???

it tastes just like Vimto!!

Cornishclio · 18/02/2025 07:18

It is not normal to neck half a bottle of wine. Water or squash yes to quench thirst but wind is usually savoured and enjoyed with a meal or sipped. I find myself drinking a white wine spritzer (wine with lemonade) faster than a normal wine but I still wouldn't down like you do. I would ration yourself to a glass at a time and drink water alongside.
