... to ask you to practise parking it in a single space? Saturday afternoon in the town multistorey and the number of huge cars parked half in a second space is 🤯

And you don't agree with the move away from fossil fuels?

This thread has nothing to do with Fossil Fuels or Car Ownership so I have no clue why you are hellbent on this derailment .

It is "Why do you want a massive 4x4 SUV when there is no need to own one and a regular sized saloon would do the same job"

It;s like if I said " I am so sickened to see that bullfights are still taking place in Spain " someone will come along a spout "Well I;m hoping you;re a vegan "

How do you know it's not required? I have never stopped people from parking, I have 2 toddlers 18 and 32 month old so I always use family spaces where possible. We also have a husky so need the boot space. If I don't have the kids I park as far away from the entrance of where ever i am going as possible.

Think you may have replied to the wrong post, unless you’re justifying parking across 2 spaces because you have more than 1 kids.
Obviously you’re not implying 2 kids and only 1 dog required a huge vehicle as the majority of people in this situation (and with 2 larger dogs) don’t as most dog owners know most very large 4x4 SUVs have boot spaces too small for 2x large dogs and the height of the lip is bad for the dogs’ front joints as they age. Yup that’s our family (in a Ford Focus FYI but looking for a lower estate).

I never, ever park in a multi storey because the spaces are always too small. And it’s often too tight going up and around the stupid ramp things. Wish they’d build them bigger.

When most multi stories were built people drove cars not tanks.

Not much point changing things as private use cars are likely to be obsolete in the future.

What car would you recommend I have on the farm then? 😂😂😂 fucking hell.

Can't you just ride the cows or sheep around?

And - I live in East London (as I said before ) we were forced to have ULEZ , very little in the way of consultation, ( There was some but it was a Done Deal)
Now we face Pay Per Mile as the number of Electric Cars means less Congestion Charge and Lower VE charges

If there needs anything addressing , increase the price of petrol/diesel so those who drive more will pay more .
But I do feel we are being forced to accept Electric cars .

I don't understand why a large SUV has to be a 'status symbol'. If we can afford one, why shouldn't we have one?

This logic could be applied to anything really.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

However most people are selfish when making a decision.

Especially when it sets a trend that impacts the environment, public space, less green areas, higher car parking costs.

SlaveToAGoldenRetriever · 15/02/2025 15:46

Any new car has them. It’s not an SUV thing. 20yo DD and I share a little Audi A1 - the LED lights are far too bright but nothing that I can do about it. I find driving at night really difficult these days as I’m constantly getting blinded by other newer cars with the same problem

How dare you let a little thing like facts get in the way of a good SUV bashing thread 😂😂

Lemonyyy · 15/02/2025 17:25

Whatever car you have, just learn to park it properly, end of.

I remember there were two of us waiting for two parking space at the supermarket once and the stupid cunt ahead of me parked across both of them. I wound down my window to tell him he was a cunt (in a roundabout way) and he acted like it was obvious and perfectly reasonable to take two spaces so no one opened a door on his (perfectly average sized, mid range) Mazda. People drive and park like pricks all the time, regardless of what car they drive!

That said I do drive a very small car and I do find it exceptionally annoying how many big SUVs cut me up or pull out in front of me, as far as I can tell simply because they know they’d basically bounce off me in a crash whereas my poor car would be totalled.

In the truth the answer is probably that a lot of people who drive shouldn’t actually be driving but no one likes that answer….

spikefaithbuffy · 15/02/2025 17:32

Some car parks are ridiculous

I drive a small car and my local shopping centre carpark is awful. It has a concrete pillar then two spaces then concrete pillar, the bit you drive around is ridiculously narrow and the whole thing is just so tight
I struggle with my car and don't in any other car park

Yet at work, home, and any other car park I can drive the defender and park it no issues at all or drive my small car and park it between defenders and still be fine to get out etc

User21012025 · 15/02/2025 17:32

I never park across 2 spaces. And when I don't have my toddlers in the car I go out of my way to park as far away as possible.
Don't understand the rest of your post sorry.

CrystalSingerFan · 15/02/2025 17:34

And another thing...

Assuming everybody does the right thing and reverses into parking spaces (don't get me started on people who don't), even then, one of the benefits for people in adjacent spaces to an SUV is lost as folk in ordinary sized cars (eg a Toyota Corolla) can't see over the raised bonnet to spot oncoming cars.

VivaVictoria · 15/02/2025 17:35

Lemsipper · 15/02/2025 14:35

Thats why I normally just park in the adult & child bays! (Despite no child) its not easy parking this beast 😜

and that's why other people hate you 😡

Exactly.

I had this with a Defender last week. Couldn't see a darned thing over the roof to move out of my parking space.

They're too big for single spaces a lot of the time.

They're too big full stop.

Fucking ridiculous for city dwellers to have these wanky child killing machines.

If you have one, I judge you.

I judge you for being judgemental

I remember some unwashed hippy type with your attitude spouting off at a woman driving a large SUV. (Doubt he would have dared had it been a male driver)

He looked right dick when she opened the back to reveal not only a wheelchair for her passenger but massive tall oxygen (?) tanks

Don't be a dick like him. Who knows why someone drives what they drive. Not really your business is it.

But you do realise that people who have smaller cars can't see past your bloody great Defender if they want to leave the car park before you?

I'm fed up staring at the hub caps of huge cars, risking life and limb trying to get out of a parking space when they are next to me.

They're becoming the size of vans/ mini buses and should have separate spaces.

Borgonzola · 15/02/2025 17:39

@JohnofWessex yes they are? We've just bought an estate car?

I get the serious urge to key cars parked like that. I never would. But I really want to.

Living in the country is a pathetic excuse for being selfish.

Huh? Requiring a vehicle that can traverse boggy roads and tow a horse box is a pretty good excuse for owning a big vehicle.

MN seems to have a high percentage of people with horse boxes.

I don’t often reverse into parking spaces. I need access to the boot so if I back into a space at a supermarket for example I can’t load my shopping. And my local multi story has spaces on a slant designed to pull forwards so you’d be pulling an awfully complicated manoeuvre to back into them!
