To believe that eating meat should be illegal?

The environmental damage and animal cruelty outweighs the cultural or personal benefits. AIBU to think it’s time to outlaw meat production?

How? Do you live within earshot of farm animals? I do.

I’m a sheep farmer.

CasperGutman · 10/02/2025 09:36

From a purely logical standpoint I can see the argument. You're not unreasonable to think a ban could be beneficial. But it's a very, very deeply embedded cultural practice that's widely accepted in our society. It's not going to be banned any time soon and you would be unreasonable to expect it to be.

Edited

But it’s not just cultural, is it? It’s biological.

Oopsadaisy92 · 10/02/2025 11:07

Hate to be the one to point this out but agricultural farming is just as environmentally damaging and causes animal cruelty. All that farming land has to go somewhere and trees need to be removed for it. The chemical pesticides used to enhance yield cause untold damage to the wildlife. The machines used to plow and harvest the land kill animals and cause unnecessary stress. But how cute does an animal have to be before the vegans become invested in their cause?

DiscoBaIIs · 10/02/2025 11:07

hamstersarse · 10/02/2025 11:02

you do know that animals are barbaric to one another don’t you? I think you are under the illusion that animals are like they are on Disney,

My hens are pretty evil to each other, same for the goats. And as for the pigs….🤪
What would you do with a hen that attacks another to the point of bleeding? Or a goat that draws blood on a newcomer?

Animals have very harsh hierarchies in their groups. They don’t do disability allowances or play “be kind” with any weaknesses

I’m not even saying this to say it justifies us eating them, more that I see you live in a naive innocent world where everything should be nice to each other, And it’s ridiculous, It’s just not true. My animals are slaughtered in as humane conditions as possible, better than how most humans die,

Nobody with any sense thinks animals are all lovely top each other like they are in a Disney movie. But we are BETTER than other animals in the way we can think about what we are doing, and we can make better choices.

There is no such thing as humane slaughter. Why do we not euthanize old cats and dogs at the slaughtehouse, if it is so humane?

Fencehedge · 10/02/2025 11:07

DiscoBaIIs · 10/02/2025 11:05

The thing is, we DO know right from wrong. And much of it is taught, too. We have been taught they animal abuse is wrong - it is illegal to hurt cats and dogs. But we are also taught that this only applies to certain animals. WHY? Do cows not experience pain the same way cats and dogs do?

Why don't people eat cats and dogs in the UK? Most here will be aghast at the idea, but not understand why.

If I kick a dog, people will try to stop me, and I'll even likely be charged. If I eat a burger from a cow, someone will ask if I want ketchup or mayo. We DO know what's right, if we think about it. But we are conditioned NOT to think, not to challenge. Those of us who DO challenge are called 'preachy vegans', in a tone telling us to shut up. But people do know, they are just uncomfortable with having it pointed out.

100% agree. Vegan-shaming is seen as acceptable now. It won't be in the future.

This has already been answered, but yay you for thinking you've said something original.

So you profit from death. I grew up on a dairy farm. I disagree with you.

Indeed. We always get the same complaints when David Attenborough and others film animal brutality in the wild - whether killing prey for food, lions killing cubs that were fathered by a rival lion or other - and don't step in to stop it.

Animals don't have these fluffy sensitivities that we do.

DiscoBaIIs · 10/02/2025 11:10

Here's a little thought experiment.

The dairy farm has blown up. No more cow or goat milk.

Your pet dog is still lactating though. Fancy squeezing on her nips for a drop of milk in your morning tea? If the thought of that is disgusting to you, think about why. Maybe you shouldn't be drinking cow's milk either.

I have dairy goats and it’s hard to articulate how wrong you are to use such black and white thinking

Of course there are bad dairy practices but my view is that is largely down to ridiculous regulations that force farmers to be working on such thin margins

Anyway, my goats and me love milking time. You’ve all acknowledged animals have feelings and therefore you will believe me when I say that I know they love it. I don’t have to force them over, they run over to the milking shed.

On that vein, there are some dairy farms who offer cows on demand milking so they can walk into the barn themselves and get on the machine on their own. Turns out they do it more often than the traditional am / pm scheduled milking. Explain that?

Any woman who has ever breastfed can tell you that. being engorged is uncomfortable. Stands to bloody reason.

The reason the dairy industry is morally questionable isn't because you milk them; it's because you take their young away from them, which is why they need milking in the first place.

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 10/02/2025 11:13

If I kick a dog, people will try to stop me, and I'll even likely be charged.

To be fair, I don't think most people would happily see you go into a field and kick a sheep or cow for fun.

There's a huge difference between killing as humanely as possible for food and just sadistic brutality for no reason whatsoever.

discdiscsnap · 10/02/2025 11:13

It's a tricky one to police . More awareness of environmental impact? Less ready meals/ fast food options with meat?

We do vegetarian 4 days a week.

Haemagoblin · 10/02/2025 11:14

Lentilweaver · 10/02/2025 10:49

I support everyones freedom to eat what they want but a plant based diet is literally that: vegetables! Why is that so hard to understand?
I have been veggie all my life as has my family.
Never had an iron deficiency
Never eaten fake meat.

Eggs and dairy though?

We generally don’t eat cats and dogs because they are carnivores. We mostly eat ruminants.

It’s not actually a moral thing, more of a nutrient thing

Yes, I eat eggs and dairy. My.mum doesnt eat eggs though, and at 80, she is super fit, a size 8, and hikes for a hobby.
My sole objection is to plant based being confused with eating processed shit.
That's like saying meat eaters eat only processed shit.

sparrowflewdown · 10/02/2025 11:18

@DiscoBaIIs you will never convert the masses beng aggressive and rude. You almost seem gleeful - Attacking a farmer who treats their animals well and supplies good meat to the country.

A shift is happening through advances in technology, hopefully we won't need to have a meat industry where animals are killed anymore.

I know it is wrong. I have always known it to be wrong, but I still eat meat. That doesn't mean that when I eat meat I don't feel uncomfortable a lot of the time - I have a conscience.

As I said we are less civilised in some ways. Not long ago, we would kill our own livestock and say a prayer for the life lost.

I think you need help

Or to see some actual real farms in action and not the vegan propaganda films

If you continue to milk them, they will continue to overproduce milk. Milk that is meant for their babies. And overproduction is bad for the mums. Leave them be.
What do you do with the boy goats? What do you do with the female goats once they have passed lactating age?

It's not propaganda if it is direct footage from farms and slaughterhouses. You're only calling it propaganda to ease your conscience. It is what it is.
