To say that Craig David is the best vocalist in the UK?

Blisssful10 · 08/02/2025 21:53

Saw CD in Milton Keynes last night and his voice was of incredible - of angelic perfection. It was incredible to hear him live. I read today that Elton John said in 2013 that he thought CD had the best voice in the UK.

Just can't stop thinking about how good CD sounded last night!

Did he sing his new song - the school assembly classic ‘He’s got the whole world in his hands’? 🤣

Snoken · 09/02/2025 07:19

Good vocalist, yes perhaps, but you are saying he's the best the UK has to offer.

I know a good vocalist when I hear one and, as Elton John hae also determined. I think CD is the best singer in the UK yes.

Shola Ama and Lamar were pretty amazing!

Craig David no range and pretty mediocre.

Yes at best surely CD has potential. His songs aren’t particularly hard to sing.

Barleycat · 09/02/2025 07:35

Yes

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 09/02/2025 07:36

Not in my opinion.

I like Rag 'no' Bone Man and (although not British, but Irish) Hozier.

But for vocal range, I give you....Rick Astley. Don't laugh. He's very good live. Look up his time at Glastonbury 2023.

noglobe · 09/02/2025 07:37

OP, do you work for CD?

While I'm not a fan of Leigh Francis, I suspect he's the only reason many people remember Craig David's name as well as they do. I know that's the case for me - he'd just be "that guy who did 7 days" otherwise. He's got a decent voice, but others were more talented with better songs.

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 09/02/2025 07:38

*Rag n Bone Man. Stupid autocorrect.

MikeTruk · 09/02/2025 07:40

Ok I’ll weigh in with my music credentials too lol piano grade 5 and I also have perfect pitch, CD’s voice just hits something in my brain, it’s incredibly close to (if not) perfect, I’d be surprised if he didn’t have perfect pitch also! Sadly I’m not a strong singer though 😭 but really want to pick up piano where my lazy self left off haha

Other singers mentioned on here - I acknowledge that yes their voices are superior but I wouldn’t be listening to their tracks as they’re just not my taste - I can’t imagine loading up my Spotify with Adele, Freddie, Amy etc but again it’s just personal taste! In my playlists CD features along with mainly US rnb artists and some older UK garage/rap/house etc along with the newer artists in those categories

PennyKitchen · 09/02/2025 07:44

Nah he's quite flat and monotone. He's good as a musician, I don't think he's an amazing vocalist.

RaspberryCombat · 09/02/2025 07:47

Rachie1973 · 08/02/2025 22:02

He used to come into where I worked and did the ‘don’t you know who I am’ crap. 25 years ago now but still remember it lol

I had this with Daniel Bedingfield. Similar vintage!

MikeTruk · 09/02/2025 07:59

@noglobe

im not OP but im pretty sure they don’t work for Craig David (but wouldn’t that be a dream job!!) 😂

if you’re a fan or follower of an artist then it’s likely you’ll know more than one song of theirs. You’re obvs not a CD fan which is why you’d only remember the bigger hits. You prob love certain artists where I’d only know one song from them etc

Wow yes thank you for commenting. The way CD sings hits something in my brain too, it's hard to explain. His voice does strange things to the brain, definitely has perfect pitch. It's magical.

Should have qualified this thread earlier by saying I know a fair bit about music myself, got to grade 6 piano, had composition lessons, play the trombone. Have seen countless live musicians and vocalists. So I do have a fair bit of experience to draw from. What I saw on Friday night in mk will stay with me. CD has only improved. Recommend him live wholeheartedly if you can get to a date on the tour.

I should qualify my opinion by saying I was in the Primary school choir and also played cello.
YABU.
He doesn't come close.
Reading this thread made me realise though I have seen him live a couple of years ago at Splendour Festival. He was like the singalong warm up in the afternoon. Boomed out his well known hits. There are better singers.
I was at Splendour to see God himself who came on later, Richard Ashcroft he casts no shadow.
There are many far better vocalists.
I had an experience at V fest a long while ago watching Human League while waiting for Killers to headline. We called it an epiphany. Phil Oakey's voice cut through the air so powerful.
There are vocalists like Freddie and George who will always be at the forefront when discussing greatest UK singers and as someone mentioned earlier Annie Lennox. David Coverdale and Robert Plant blow CD out of the water. I remember hearing Elaine Paige singing and being taken aback to actually hear her voice. Heather Small was at Splendour at the same time her voicewas so pure..
No CD hasn't become a contender can sound a bit whiny.

Lols I sang in a church choir for around 4 years from when I was about 9 and many other choirs including recently a folk choir for a little while. I love singing but know I am bang average at it at best.

It was tongue in cheek, but I appreciate that doesn't necessarily come across in writing.

OP is just quite intense for an adult fan - making sure everyone knows he's doing some amazing, incredible, absolutely breathtaking live shows at the moment, letting everyone know he has a new album out soon, repeatedly saying he's even better now and everyone should go see him... Gushing over him/arguing with people who disagree like a 14 year old schoolgirl ("he's the BEST SINGER in the UK and maybe even THE WHOLE WORLD" 😍🥰) did make me chuckle.

I agree, CD has amazing voice. One of my favourite tracks is the duet he did with Dan Smith from Bastille. I’m not familiar with his latest music though.

Leigh Francis is the creepy fucker though. Bo Selecta has aged like milk.

That's it you see, it's the utter obsession with Craig David (from the OP) that is coming across as weird - and borderline creepy. And her desperation to insist he is the 'best singer and music artist in the world,' when she is allegedly not his agent, or his mum, is plain odd. And she's practically wetting herself with excitement at the tiny handful of posters who are agreeing with her (even slightly!)

Also, Leigh Francis is nothing to do with Craig David's career going in the shitter. It went in the shitter because he is bog standard, ordinary, dull, and average, with an average 'singing' voice, and average music talent. Also his songs are basic, and they all sound the same...

And as you said @noglobe , Leigh Francis is the only reason most people remember or recognise Craig David. And don't forget that Craig gave the go ahead for Leigh to impersonate/mock him. So if he IS pissed off about it, he only has himself to blame.

And as I said earlier, Mel B had no problem with Leigh Francis sending her up, and it didn't 'wreck her career.' It's just convenient for Craig to blame Leigh for his career going downhill. The reason it went downhill was, because people got bored with him quickly, because he's not very interesting, his songs all sound the same, and he is an average singer and average performer.

Your obsession for Craig David is a bit worrying @Blisssful10 . I gather you're not married ... Or are you married to him in your head?

Also, any tiny grain of respect I may have had for the OP (and it was tiny,) for 'standing by her man!' blew out of the window when she said he is better than George Michael. : I nearly cracked a rib laughing at that one! 😂

Not an obsession was just enthused by his live show and wanted to share that

I am married! Thanks not that that's got anything to do with anything. You can really like someone's voice without fancying them just so you know.

I would take Elton John's opinion on vocal talent over yours. But you are free to like whichever singer you like.

I went tk sss cd with my husband as I said upthread. My husband like a lot of posters wasn't that excited by the show beforehand but was blown away. I don't think my husband fancied him either but will double check this later lols.

You are unreasonable to say anyone is "the best vocalist in the UK." It's a meaningless claim. It is impossible to judge. Initiating this conversation makes you sound about 12 years old. And a bit simple-minded

It is perfectly reasonable for you to say anyone - even Craig David (Craig David!) - is your favourite vocalist. And to have a conversation about that.

Elton made the comment. Do you think he is simple minded? I just agreed with him. CD doesn't get the respect he deserves in this country as evidenced by many posters on this thread.

I don't think it's quite true that CD willingly gave permission to Francis. As far as I am aware, CD's manager thought the best way for CD to deal with it was for CD to appear to take it with good nature, and even go on the show. Francis would have continued with or without endorsement from CD.

CD was placed in the rather awkward position of either looking like a whiny celeb who can't take a joke, or putting up with it and smiling through gritted teeth.

It's quite difficult to judge how much of an impact Leigh Francis had. I'd say I only really think of CD in terms of Leigh Francis, but that might be where the damage came in. Awful timing. CD wasn't an established artist as the time. His big mainstream hit was completely overshadowed by LF taking the piss. The tune became inseparable with the comedy, making the song itself a joke. It's hard to know what would have happened to the song and the artist in terms of the mainstream music scene if LF hadn't come up with Bo Selecta.

And I suspect the same is true of Mel B. Were they really able to say, no actually I don’t like the clearly racist idiot making fun of me and the nation joining in.
It may make me sound po-faced but it’s not funny and he’s creepy.
