I always make:

batch of soup for lunch (not in Summer)
a couple of loaves of bread in bread maker
sandwich filler for the kids - tuna mayo, coronation chicken etc
green juice for me (on a weight loss kick)
overnight oats for teen daughter
used to make breakfast muffins but fallen out it
Chinese style pickled cucumbers - we make a massive batch which my daughters have with almost every meal think it is a social media thing

Just has become part of my routine and does make life easier

Curious what others do

Following with interest as I am an "open the cupboards at 5.30pm and work out wtf I'm making for dinner" type woman.

I really really wish I was like you, so hopping on here for tips.

MissyB1 · 05/02/2025 15:44

Oat pancakes, ds eats them when he gets in from school. I make a massive batch of them on a Monday and keep them in a tub in the fridge.

Jellycatspyjamas · 05/02/2025 15:46

I make soup for my lunch for the week and have fruit salad in the fridge to top yoghurt for breakfast and for kids after school. That’s about it, I do keep ingredients for quick dinners, eg mushrooms/ tomatoes for a quick pasta sauce with onions and cream. I also have a freezer stocked with batch cooked casseroles etc that can just go in the oven.

  • A few batches of soup. One chunky one usually, and then a blended one. Can be anything but favourites are tomato soup and spicy sweet potato!
  • Loaves of bread and pitta breads.
  • Broth to make pho.
  • Basic tomato sauce that we can turn into whatever we fancy.
  • Yoghurt.
  • Curry.
  • Quiche in the summer.
  • Pasties in the winter. Not every week though.

Some weeks we also batch cook chili, bolognese, etc. We don't really have a weekly rotation of meals though, tend to change quite a bit, so it really varies!

Can you share the recipe please? They sound great.

Absolutely nothing, lol.

What happens if you've made something you don't fancy when the time comes?

SpringleDingle · 05/02/2025 15:49

Yeast free bread for the intolerant one. Soup, fairly often. Labneh (lactose free) also for the intolerant one. I do cook every evening and we often eat leftovers for lunch the next day.

Badbacklife · 05/02/2025 15:49

Not weekly, but I always have some homemade soups in the freezer

Yes please @MissyB1

When I only had 2 kids I used to do lots of this sort of thing. Wish I could get back into it. I did energy balls, hummus and seed crackers every week. Seed crackers OMG. I will share the recipe in a sec. Those are quite expensive to make so it stops me overeating them. Ditto the energy balls really.

outerspacepotato · 05/02/2025 15:50

Soup, stew, or big salad. I freeze cubes of stew and soup.
Bread, pizza dough, tortillas, or pita bread. I can freeze bread or the pizza dough for later use.
A big stir fry
Big Batch of oatmeal and yogurt

coffeeagogo · 05/02/2025 15:50

Boiled eggs for the fridge- handy as a snack with salt, on toast for a quick brekkie or in a salad

GreyWasp · 05/02/2025 15:51

I really don’t have much to do to on a Sunday (kids are no longer very young). It gives me just enough to do between pottering around the house/sitting on my arse whilst still feeling like i am unwinding

Soup during winter
Batch cook a meal for the freezer at the weekend
A cake (to stop me buying treats but can often eat a third before anyone else in the family has seen it)
Then usually some banana pancakes for my toddlers too!

GiddyRobin · 05/02/2025 15:52

Oh, and hummus too! Though that's more than weekly as we're all hummus fiends. 😆

cstaff · 05/02/2025 15:54

I always have a batch of spag bol in freezer for any evening I don't feel like cooking. Usually 6 or 7 portions.

A couple of different Korean side dishes (banchan), usually wilted spinach, a cucumber salad, and some pickled radishes as well as a batch of gochujang sauce. Dinner at the moment is often a bowl of rice with fish and a couple of different vegetables, and this makes it all a lot quicker.

I don’t make actual meals. More like snacks/breakfasts on the go.

They're so easy too! Cheese and onion pasties are my fave. 😍 Smushed onto heavily buttered bread and devoured as a sarnie.

Ooh I like the idea of making this. Please may I ask your recipe? My son has got into the habit of eating crudite with ranch. Would prefer something with less additives

Here you go
https://www.thekitchn.com/

It's in American measurements so in ours you need;
85g rolled oats
250mls milk
100g soft butter
The rest is in tablespoons or teaspoons.

He has them with either butter/jam/syrup /Nutella

Of course!

Tin or two of chickpeas (or you can use the dried, but I usually can't be bothered. I include some of the aquafaba)
Garlic (clove or two)
Lemon juice (I use a full lemon)
Tahini (usually two hefty teaspoons, depends on taste)
Olive oil (a good drizzle...I'm not sure, I eyeball a lot of things!)
Salt and pepper

Blitz! I like adding spices like paprika, or roasted red peppers too. Even rosemary is nice! Dark chickpeas (kala chana?) have a nutty flavour too. You can even mix things up and use one tin of chickpeas and one butterbeans!

Your son might like ful medames/foul muddamas. Some leave it chunky, but I was taught to make more of a hummus texture!

Foul Mudammas (Fava beans) فول مدمس

Foul is a staple food not just in Palestine, but also across the Middle East, it’s a cheap popular healthy dish. The fava beans themselves are known to carry the highest amount of protein within

@FlickFlackTrap if link doesn't take you straight to the pancakes, just search oatmeal panc on the Kitchn

JoyousPinkPeer · 05/02/2025 16:08

Bollognause sauce, including loads of veg (batch cook) - quick, healthy meal.

Soups, again batch cook.
