Said husband.. said friend..

I feel levels of disgust each time I read this. Simply writing 'my friend/ husband' would leave the reader in no confusion..

My cat has now become 'the aforementioned feline'

It smacks of people who achieved at best a grade C at GCSE English, now attempting to come across as literate and well read.

Everyone is entitled to be annoyed by a certain writing/posting style.

What’s obnoxious is a poster making judgements about people they’ve never met and supposing they are somehow of superior intelligence.

Says nothing of OPs IQ but everything about their EQ.

Agreed. Or calling someone, for example, a 'malignant queef'. Don't get me wrong, I love a good insult and dish them out myself, but only for people who really deserve it: rude, obnoxious, selfish or aggressive people.

People can't help their level of intelligence or even education in a lot of cases. It's like hating someone for having blue eyes!

So you're saying that some people are just born stupid? And this is your post defending them?
'It's not their fault they're thick.. they were just born that way ' 🤣

Did anyone else think this would be about op's husband having an affair with her friend? 🤔

Yes and I’m ashamed to say I was disappointed.

Spellings, grammar, writing etc don't make people stupid. Smart people use the tools available to them to overcome any challenges they may have. You sound like you need a mental health check in. I hope your kinder to the people you interact with in real life

Bloody click bait! I was ready to shout LTB.

KettleOnCredit · 04/02/2025 21:00

Yes let's be kind everyone! Daffodil
I've made my point, it was controversial.
Not everyone will agree and nor are they expected to.
But it's certainly nice to see that there are others who also view 'said.. person, said dinner.. said.. said...' as unnecessary and detracting from any perceived/ hoped got intelligence that you thought the poster may have.
(That they were born with, because I've also learnt from astute posters here, that some people are born thick).
I won't name names. 🤣
Enjoy your evening!

I didn't use those words. And of course people naturally have different levels of intelligence and have different opportunities for education. That's not controversial.

You're judging me by your own low standards and I'd rather you didn't, really.
But I see that you're off now that this thread hasn't gone the way you wanted (or has it!).

It's annoying and not needed either.
I do love how the poster who remarked on my lack of a full stop had to edit their own short post.
AIBU??
Honestly it's really annoys me EVERY time I read this.. 'said daughter, said husband, said dog..'
I can't be the only one. This isn't Netmums.. maybe standards have dropped..

OP, I agree with you.

It's a chat forum, not a legal document.

Bit disappointed it's just another goady pedant who thinks they're dead clever and witty, tinkly laugh head tilt Biscuit etc.

Your comment “this isn’t netmums” is so snobby and silly.

@KettleOnCredit You keep forgetting to put full stops at the end of sentences.

It's not as bad as 'myself and DH'.

Or use of myself/yourself when it’s bloody ME/YOU!!

<breathes>

Fargo79 · 05/02/2025 09:44

Do we think this is some kind of weird kink? Where people get a kick out of being told they're a bit of a dick by strangers, so they start a really aggressive thread for absolutely no reason? Or is it just the adult equivalent of attention-starved kids at primary school who are mean to the other children? Such bizarre behaviour.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 05/02/2025 10:10

Ah, "this is not netmums" otherwise known as box number one on the MN bingo card.

On the spelling and grammar issue, I was born dyslexic and luckily my spellchecker works well but occasionally things still slip through the net. So if you are one of those people who gets their kicks pointing other people's errors out then I'd be taking a long hard look at myself and maybe getting a hobby.

And as for people being born thick, to quote your delightful choice of wording... I would rather be thick than a pretentious sneering fucker. Said I.

KettleOnCredit · 05/02/2025 21:21

Well done @AnAlpaca
Beautifully put!

There is no gripe by me on spelling or punctuation.

My annoyance is when something is referred to once and from then on it's 'said'

For example:
'I gave my dog a treat. Said dog was very happy'

It's obviously the dog previously mentioned, not a complete random dog new to the story for example.

It's unnecessary in my view. And over done to the point it really irritates me!

Said I is totally fine (just to reassure you) x

OP posts:
WigglyVonWaggly · 05/02/2025 22:19

It’s people who. Not people that.

I’m being rude and sneery, aren’t I? However, if you’re going to turn your nose up at others then it’s best to make sure that your own post is flawless.

KettleOnCredit · 05/02/2025 22:24

Not at all @WigglyVonWaggly and I take no offence and thank you for the grammatical correction.
You have missed the point slightly and I am sorry if you felt I was being rude and 'sneery'

Is that even a word?? 🤣

Anyway, as it's clearly struck a chord with you, please don't worry.

Said wriggly should chill out a bit rather than scouring old previous posts for an error. An evening well spent?? 🤣
