Said husband.. said friend..

I feel levels of disgust each time I read this. Simply writing 'my friend/ husband' would leave the reader in no confusion..

My cat has now become 'the aforementioned feline'

It smacks of people who achieved at best a grade C at GCSE English, now attempting to come across as literate and well read.

OK that's nice dear.

sugarandfudge · 04/02/2025 02:43

No pot left, at least, because it's already been smoked.

CalicoPusscat · 04/02/2025 02:44

It doesn't wind me up

Well that's a fucking relief! We can all sleep easy now Calico! 🤣

It's 'Kettle on Credit'
No pot 🤣

No. You are a brilliant example of the kettle and the pot. .

Starlia · 04/02/2025 02:56

Do you mean on Mumsnet or in a book?
What is your opinion on using an ellipsis correctly?

DoItBetter · 04/02/2025 03:11

This is why it's best not to start threads on Mumsnet during the witching hours.

I got a D in English O'Level three times in a row but I managed a 1 in GCSE. ٪

I agree with you OP. I find it cringeworthy when posters try and write in a twee or over elaborate way. I can't get too het up about SPAG mistakes as I know my own posts will be full of them. I've a pet peeve about the overuse of 'myself' though. It's so silly sounding.

It's so funny how so many posters have come onto this thread to tell you off for worrying about something they think trivial. You would have thought they would read the title of your thread and simply moved on.

I think lots of posters enjoy being angry.

MissedItByThisMuch · 04/02/2025 03:53

I’m with you OP, annoys me too. Amongst many other grammar, syntax and spelling matters. I am becoming old and curmudgeonly.

So many people jumping on the “this is so trivial” bandwagon. It’s a chat forum. It’s full of trivial stuff (and some not so trivial). The nice thing is that if you find a post not to your taste/interest/required degree of significance you can just scroll on past.

Auldlang · 04/02/2025 04:44

It's pretty tragic that your measure of literacy is a GCSE grade. You can get A* at GCSE and still be a truly shitty writer and communicator. This is a forum where many people write colloquially and many of them are as inarticulate or pompous as they probably are in conversation. That is what it is. If you want eloquence subscribe to the Paris Review. Don't look for it on a forum where (largely) knackered parents are relaxing or venting a bit by talking mostly nonsense.

wordler · 04/02/2025 05:09

Where are you reading this? Mumsnet?

I can’t remember anyone writing like that on here.

SecretSoul · 04/02/2025 05:27

KettleOnCredit · 04/02/2025 02:46

Well that's a fucking relief! We can all sleep easy now Calico! 🤣

Your snarky condescension towards completely reasonable posters combined with sneery comments about the literacy of others, while simultaneously making multiple grammatical errors yourself, is truly something to behold.

Many people have linguistic pet hates but there’s no need to be so derogatory towards others.

HowDairy · 04/02/2025 05:57

Oh maaan.

I honestly thought this was going to be a "He said...", "She said..." thing!

CatamaranViper · 04/02/2025 05:59

What's wrong with grade C GCSE?

What a strange thing to be snobby about

It's annoying and not needed either.
I do love how the poster who remarked on my lack of a full stop had to edit their own short post.
AIBU??
Honestly it's really annoys me EVERY time I read this.. 'said daughter, said husband, said dog..'
I can't be the only one. This isn't Netmums.. maybe standards have dropped..

Using 'said x' is quite common (as in frequent, not classless) in both speech and writing. I don't understand why you think it is only used my the barely literate.
Bit of an own goal there...
(Three full stops, an ellipses)

EllipsisSynopsis · 04/02/2025 06:37

It's almost like some people just post in AIBU to pick a fight...

Luddite26 · 04/02/2025 06:40

Well I thought this was going to be a thread about said husband having a thing for said friend. Well that's good at least.

Thank you for this reply, @Auldlang .
I have to admit to being a bit of an arse over SpaG, yet have been hoist by my own petard when pointing out an error while making one myself. Obviously, I get my arse handed to me on a plate over it, quite rightly.
But I must admit, general parental knackeredness is a parameter I hadn't considered, so you've opened my eyes.
😊

If you use ‘and’ then ‘either’ at the end of your sentence is redundant.

KettleOnCredit · 04/02/2025 02:46

This should be ‘We can all sleep easy now, Calico’ - you’ve missed a comma.

TaggieO · 04/02/2025 06:45

Now do you see how annoying it is when someone appoints themselves arbiter of the English language….?

it doesn’t affect you in the slightest, so just ignore it. Nobody has perfect mastery of the entire lexicon, you included.

AllMyExesWearRolexes · 04/02/2025 06:51

Whilst it is trivial, I really don't like "said" used this way, stylistically it grates on me. However, I have learned something from the thread because I didn't know that it was a contraction of "aforesaid".
Jeden tag ist ein schulen tag...

ForPearlNewt · 04/02/2025 06:54

I write like that. But I like it, so I'll continue using said writing style and give not a fuck about the opinions of random goady bastards on the internet.

OnlyWhenILaugh · 04/02/2025 06:57

What irritates me more is a pedant not using pedant's corner.

Crocsake · 04/02/2025 07:01

😂 I don’t share this particular gripe with you OP (although I’ll probably notice it all the time now and it will bug me), but I’m going to stick up for you because I have many minor irritations with expressions people use, particularly on MN. And I’m sure if I shared them, just because it’s a free world and and you can do that on a discussion forum, I’d probably get told to get out more too.
