What is something you didn't realise until later in life

I was cooking today, following a recipe and usually when it states 'salt and pepper to taste' I always though well obviously it's to taste, I've only just realised it means add as much as you personally like.. got me thinking what everyone has cottoned onto later in life?

That a Twix chocolate bar is so called because it's TWo stIX!

MyProudHare · 02/02/2025 21:33

My mum has always misused the word 'intrepid' to mean fearful instead of fearless... took me until adulthood to realise. 😂

AlloaintheMiddle · 02/02/2025 21:35

Recently been told, as a keen crafter, that craft knifes come with a groove on their caps to snap the blades and get them a new sharp end.
Specific I know but life changing here! 😆

The origin of the Boomtown Rays song I don't like Mondays..I was a tween when it came out and 50s before I realised..

That the punchline to the joke "Why did the chicken cross the road? - To get to the other side" is a double meaning. The other side = The afterlife. As in the chicken gets run over on purpose. I never ever got until the last 2 months or so. Im 36.

Yes, there was a Lilly Allen song I specifically remember listening to/singing when I was young, I can't remember the name but I heard it the other year I was gobsmacked by the lyrics

Nooo. I can’t believe it. I’m sticking to the original thinking. The chicken survives!

I have learned, much too late in life, that:

  1. Carrying a cloth hankie (ideally a man-size one) is very useful.
  2. Using a pencil for notes, especially one with a rubber on the end, is better than a pen.
  3. Drawing the curtains in a room keeps the heat in.

I know, durr. But I am a slow learner in many ways.

I was quite an age before finding out that mince pies don’t actually contain meat 🫣

as a life long vegetarian it was quite a discovery and I’ve been a mince pie enthusiast ever since!

How did you miss this? It was all over the news at the time. I was 11 at the time and we all knew about it.
I saw a documentary about her a few years ago and it’s extremely likely that her father was SA her.

Money really does make the world go round. Socialism doesn’t ever work. Dogs are angels walking on earth.

I was a very sheltered child, certain things were not considered suitable for young ears. TV was restricted to certain programmes, I think I probably wasn't aware at the time and didn't make the connection later. Weirdly, I was made aware of other world events but not that. My general knowledge was good...odd...

That being married to my wife is awesome. We didn't find each other until our 40s.

Just to check - are you buying vegetarian mince pies? Traditional mincemeat has suet.
