How are Canadians and Americans feeling about the Tarrifs starting Tuesday?

I’ve been searching for brands and items that will be affected.

it all seems so surreal.

Trump is clearly a bell end, but he’s been voted in off the back of a government that mandated a jab that they knew was dangerous, then censored any dissenting voices, directed a chaotic and disastrous abandonment of Afghanistan, and effectively allowed a senile old man to be in charge thereby preventing any effective challenger from coming through in the primaries. The thing that surprises me most is that people in Europe /UK are even surprised he was voted in and can’t see that the former government was also pretty terrible in parts

How old is Trump again?

CA, dh and I as retirees will be fine. But I worry for my two adult sons (40yrs) right in the middle of their careers barely over Covid. Then there’s the gov debts my grandkids will owe.
That aside I firmly believe we will never trust the USA again.
I hope we sort our border, buy our military equipment elsewhere and get our oil and gas to the east coast (Quebec’s use of Russian oil/gas is disgusting).
Money laundering/drugs needs to be flushed out.
Trump mentioned our low medication prices, and not allowing USA banks.
I’m damn grateful for our robust banking system.
We use to have good pharmaceutical companies here. Fingers crossed we get organized asap.

Tell me more about Quebec and Russian gas and oil,I didn't know about that! 😳

Crikeyalmighty · 03/02/2025 11:19

@HeBeaverandSheBeaver totally agree- I did however attend an event at the House of Commons last week related to creative industry's and that was good and positive- there is will- it's the finding solutions that's challenging

CarpetKnees · 03/02/2025 11:31

and effectively allowed a senile old man to be in charge

I mean, Trump is only 4 years younger than Biden, so will be the same age at the end of this administration. But the key point is, Trump's lack of cognitive function and inability to speak coherently was clear before he was elected.

@Fordian https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7432083
here’s a recent article.
Quebec also refuses to allow a pipeline to be built from AB to QU for “environmental” reasons. Although plenty available.

Banned Russian oil is coming to Canada. Here's how

GildedRage · 03/02/2025 13:05

The province of Alberta is landlocked. British Columbia to the west refuses a pipeline to be built for environmental reasons. So does Quebec. So the province has no choice but to sell it south, as crude oil we don’t refine it we pipe it and sell it cheap (below market value) the US refines it and either uses it or sells it at a big profit.

cooldarkroom · 03/02/2025 13:07

Maybe build Canadian refineries ?

GildedRage · 03/02/2025 13:16

@cooldarkroom ee also sell our lumber raw and cheap. Yes the tone is build and sell to other countries but it will take a few years. Thankfully we have a well educated workforce.
Eastern provinces though face other issues.

I’m seeing quite a few Americans on Insta in complete bewilderment and horror. Somebody popped up on my feed saying it’s like living through Covid and the days since he’s been in power have been gruelling with the worry caused by the relentless measures he keeps signing off. I suspect many are bewildered and scared. I have faith in the American people.

They were stupid enough to vote the orange idiot in.

They were stupid enough to vote the orange idiot in.

49.7% of the 64% of eligible voters who turned out voted him in.

That leaves a lot of the rest of us, many of whom are not surprised by what's happening, but watching in horror all the same.

Bet Quebec and BC are regretting that!

I only know one Canadian well, from AL. She says much of Canada is losing patience with Quebec. Is that so?

GildedRage · 03/02/2025 15:21

@Fordian i can only speak for dh and I although we both grew up in Qu and have family there the province has some radical views.

cooldarkroom · 03/02/2025 18:52

From what I understand there is alot of bad feeling between the anglo & franco speaking Canadians.
IN QC I think the pipeline issue is due to indigenous people refusing the pipeline across their land, real worries about pollution, & basically feeling they are being exploited by the rich.

cooldarkroom · 04/02/2025 07:30

Trump is backing down ? Ontario have frozen their ban on US business deals
(Including a $100 million Starlink contact...)
While negotiations take place

Or Trump backed down after they cancelled a load of contracts with US companies. If Trump starts up the Tariffs again they will go ahead with cancelling. Canadians now know loads of Canadian goods they can buy to replace US ones because Facebook has been flooded with links to them and shops are making sure they highlight them more. There has been a resurgence in Canadian nationalism. The trade deficit will be higher, not lower if Canadians avoid US products.

cooldarkroom · 04/02/2025 08:37

Yes the fb links are amazing... Hopefully Metro/IGA etc will reduce purchasing US goods for their shelves permanently.
It would be a win, win
Better for Canada all round

Many didn’t. Let’s not forget that.

But now there’s another senile old man in charge.

GildedRage · 04/02/2025 11:09

Trumps communication style is so untraditional for a politician it causes a lot of chaos.
I hope our Canadian politicians realize he’s untrustworthy, and move forward on several projects to improve our self reliance.
I’m pleased to know my Kirkland TP is Canadian. I’ll do my part to distance myself.

It’s a very long and complicated explanation for another thread. You are sorta right. Indigenous rights are complex and it isn’t just down to french and English speaking Canada.
