Canadians & the US tariff war

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 02/02/2025 17:43

How are Canadians and Americans feeling about the Tarrifs starting Tuesday?

I’ve been searching for brands and items that will be affected.

it all seems so surreal.

I’m probably completely naive but why can’t Canada just say ok well we’ll take our oil elsewhere thankyou very much and offer good prices to Mexico, EU etc. US would be screwed without it.

RayonSunrise · 03/02/2025 08:46

Infrastructure, I'm assuming. Canada will have built pipelines to get energy into the US, as NAFTA has been in place for so long it's been the obvious biggest market for them.

I'd assume everything can also be sent by ship, though. Even if it might be slower/more expensive to do so.

I think our biggest error has been to underestimate Trumps understanding of politics. Liberalism has been blinding and left states vulnerable.

It's interesting to see a reawakening of Canadian nationalism though!

I have lots of family in Canada and my Facebook 8s flooded with lists of products Canadians can buy that are Canadian made. Maybe this will be a positive thing for Canadian industry. I can imagine more companies pushing that they are made in Canada and more Canadians making sure they are buying Canadian goods.

I think NAFTA mean Canada was selling their oil and gas at a lower rate to the US, so they could just sell it at market rate, then add the 25%.

RayonSunrise · 03/02/2025 08:17

He's a bully, and he's making it clear he doesn't want allies, he wants vassal states. That's what the "51st state" taunt is really about - he would never actually want to give Canadians voting rights or state-type powers!

The bit I'm finding most disturbing is just how unconcerned most Americans seem to be. Their domestic culture war is so all-encompassing it's like they have completely lost sight of how useful allies have been for them as a superpower.

Trump is clearly a bell end, but he’s been voted in off the back of a government that mandated a jab that they knew was dangerous, then censored any dissenting voices, directed a chaotic and disastrous abandonment of Afghanistan, and effectively allowed a senile old man to be in charge thereby preventing any effective challenger from coming through in the primaries. The thing that surprises me most is that people in Europe /UK are even surprised he was voted in and can’t see that the former government was also pretty terrible in parts

RayonSunrise · 03/02/2025 09:00

@curious79 I suspect most Canadians would like to see Americans sorting out their own house before they start abusing their allies to make it seem as though they're accomplishing something. But as you've demonstrated, they don't care.

Exactly
I would love them to do this. Team Canada 🇨🇦

I think we can safely say that Trump has all but ripped up NAFTA soon think we should go elsewhere. Sorta feels like with Russian sanctions this could be our time….

For anyone who hasn’t yet seen this rather great speech (however you feel about Trudeau) about Canada’s response to the tariffs.

China are definitely going to be the world leaders by 2050

The west is done. We can't compete with them and they are getting into our life through social media and cheap selling sites.

If our govt can't step up and provide good jobs for their own citizens and protect us and th planet from this shit then we may as well forget improvement in our standards of living.

This sounds very conspiracy theory but sadly I fear it isn't

RayonSunrise · 03/02/2025 10:12

@HeBeaverandSheBeaver NAFTA, the EU, the UN, the WTO, and other rules-based international agreements were how the West was balancing growth with protecting its political and economic interests. Now that the US is pulling down its own system and turning on its allies, I'm afraid it's the best opportunity China's yet had. (Almost as good as the US pulling away from international development and letting China quietly buy up all the mineral contracts through Africa...)

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 03/02/2025 10:13

@RayonSunrise

Another excellent point.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 03/02/2025 10:41

Trudeau did give a great speech.

It’s absurd this is happening but it’s kind of amazing to see so many Canadians standing up for Canada.

OP posts:
cooldarkroom · 03/02/2025 10:41

Canada supply huge quantities of water, electricity, lumber & steel among other essential materials that the US need for their car industry.
I can't see how the US can maintain their customs price increase when all these products become either less available or cost 25% more.

Team Canada

XWKD · 03/02/2025 10:49

The US is facing a decline in the same way the UK was a century ago. When Europe tore itself apart the US became the world's economic superpower. Now it's China's turn. Alienating western allies isn't going to end well for anyone but China.

Trump was voted in because too many people are down the same disinformation rabbit hole as you apparently are.

Also, you might want to look up who negotiated the Afghanistan withdrawal. Hint: it was the first Trump administration.

Crikeyalmighty · 03/02/2025 10:56

Personally I think it's great he's showed his hand this early - I think it's going to utterly backfire - the guy is a moron -they tried this years ago pre war and it simply didn't work -the problem here in UK is do we piss off the car manufacturers or allow unfettered access to all our services- my own belief is we stand firm or it will never end - and we sort out a customs union with EU asap - we actually don't have that much we really need that is imported from US- only thing it's bugger for me personally is our business US exports ( not huge ) and my Californian wine habit

Crikeyalmighty · 03/02/2025 10:58

@curious79 and you think Trump wouldn't have been out there mandating the jab if he had been in power ? - he was all behind developing the vaccine when in power . This was the guy who was busy suggesting in all seriousness some really dodgy 'remedies'

Coolasfeck · 03/02/2025 11:00

The last time Trump was in power he started a trade war which almost killed the American farming industry. Farmers had to be bailed out by tax payers to the tune of $32billion.

This is what happens when you’re crazy and surrounded by yes men. The fact millions of people voted him back in is insane.

Crikeyalmighty · 03/02/2025 11:00

@HeBeaverandSheBeaver I'm not so sure of that - China is only where it is through very cheap labour and a total not giving a shit about copyright or patents - the minute that changes then they lose their competitive advantage.

Agreed
@Curious, you give yourself away in your 1st line...
And of course everyone knows Biden was a disaster in many ways. But Trump? An abomination

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 03/02/2025 11:01

@Crikeyalmighty
Well quite. But are we standing up for these rights? I fear for our creatives out there we are not? We seem to be rolling over and letting this happen.

Strong vibes of Zelensky's speech addressing Russians directly, quite similar in content and spirit, down to being bilingual.
