How often do you have homemade soup?

Just curious. I am always thoroughly impressed with myself when I make soup instead of buying it. Feel like Martha Stewart especially if I have whacked the bread maker out.

Just curious how often people make soup? Growing up my parents literally never once made it.

Quite often. I tend to make a big pan, then freeze portions, so I always have a few different kinds in the freezer.

I love soup!

It takes minutes to chop up veg, pour over stock then just leave it to simmer away. You can either have it chunky, blended or part blended. It is probably the least faffy thing to make.

Or use frozen veg, literally pour some into the pot, some water and a stock cube for even less faff

I make my own vegetable stock using an idea I read here. I have a bag in my freezer where I throw vegetable peelings, veg and herb stalks, and anything going a bit soft. When it's full I pour it all in a big pan with water and peppercorns and boil for 10 minutes or so. Then strain. It can be used straight away or frozen in ice cube trays to be used when needed.

Every week. I love soup. This is my favourite recipe but I don’t have exact quantities.

lentil and veg soup

1 large onion finely sliced
2 sticks of celery sliced
1 large fat leek sliced
garlic to your taste.
stock or stock cubes

split peas
carrots sliced
potatoes cut into small chunks.
swede, if you like it, cut into small chunks.
broccoli
spinach

And this is what you do.

sauté the first four ingredients in some oil of your choice till they are looking nice

rinse the split peas and add them to your veg and them give them a stir around.

add liberal amounts of stock and simmer what’s in the pot for about 45 mins

next add the carrots and Swede and simmer those in the mix till they are half cooked

add the spuds and simmer again in a low heat until they are almost ready

add the broccoli and simmer till it’s almost ready - at this stage your soup should have thickened and come together and be looking cloudy. And if it’s not ready, you’ll feel it in your heart when it is, simmer a while longer even if you have to add more stock.

Last but not least add the spinach at the last moment and season to taste.

This is not a quick 30 minute soup. It’s one that benefits from a longer cooking and it will take on the love you give it when tending to it.

Sometimes I add a chopped grilled chicken breast to it if it’s a day I’m needing more protein but the remains of a roast chicken are also delicious in it.

I also love a tomato soup I make with the tomato’s I grow every year.

Every week, usually on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Enough for lunch and some to take to work on Monday. I can’t bear soup out of a carton so it needs to be homemade.

I'm not keen on soup. It's not filling and I get bored eating it halfway down a bowl of it.

I usually make 3 soups a week, sometimes more in the winter. Cold soup in the summer. Not a fan of British soups like leek and potato, always a bit flavourless and too smooth. Thinking about it, if more people made soup there might be less beige oven food being bought.

A couple of times a year, usually when I have a glut of something. Last soup I made was a curried parsnip soup on Christmas Eve as I'd inadvertently ordered 4kg of parsnips rather than the two bags I'd intended to get.

I make it a few times a year, but I've made it twice this year so far and this thread inspired me to make more today. So that's lunch sorted for the next four days.

I'm not great at it, but it's only me that eats it, so it'll do.

And it feels good getting to the end of the working week knowing I have eaten a healthier lunch and not wasted money on crap they sell us at work.

Whenever I want soup - I find shop bought ones totally disappointing now I can make my own.

I agree! They taste of plastic.

I go through phases where I can make a pot once a week. I love them. Some are so easy to make too!
My granny made two massive pots every weekend and they were delicious so I love the feeling of drinking / eating? a bowl of soup. So comforting!

I eat homemade soup almost every day. I make it at least once or twice a week. I love soup.

In winter, about 4 days per week for tea. It’s cheap, tasty, easy to make, and gets plenty veg in me. I grew up having homemade soup most days for lunch, so I’ve really just swapped it to a different meal!

Almost every day in Winter. Chicken soup made from bones and left overs, courgette , goats cheese and tomato soup if I've not had chicken. "Tinned" soup tastes foul to me now, sorry!

Never. I know how to, and have done it several times. I just don't experience soup as a worthwhile meal! The only soup I truly appreciate is bouillabaisse, but not enough to bother making it.

I sometimes make mish-mash dishes that would be soup if I put more liquid in.

Every week. I always have some soup in the fridge. Not that keen on many shop bought soups - I like Soupologie, Re:Nourish, Covent Garden mushroom soup, Waitrose Green Thai chicken soup and M&S chicken soup. But too many have cream in and others are not as nice as homemade.

My favs to make are leek and watercress, mushroom & chestnut, Tuscan bean soup, celeriac and apple, beetroot & horseradish. Just made some Jerusalem artichoke soup today.

Those sound lovely! Can you suggest any recipes?

The only reason I buy ready made soups now is to benefit from the plastic tubs they come in, which I use to freeze my own home made soups in the perfect quantity.

This is my top tip though, use a marker pen (washable so you can reuse) to write the variety on the lid. I started doing this when I kept serving up parsnip soup from the freezer instead of dal.

Bol soup, aside from being excellent, used to come in lovely screw top storage containers

I still have lots of them (dried fruit, sugar, practically anything, in addition to reusing for lunch soup), but they switched last year and their soup comes in the same kind of containers as all the others.
Stopped buying it.
