How often do you have homemade soup?

Just curious. I am always thoroughly impressed with myself when I make soup instead of buying it. Feel like Martha Stewart especially if I have whacked the bread maker out.

Just curious how often people make soup? Growing up my parents literally never once made it.

3 or 4 times a week for lunch. Kids have it twice a week in their packed lunches. I make a batch and freeze it into individual portions, reheat in the morning and put into flasks. Currently in the freezer is lentil, mushroom, carrot and coriander, cream of vegetable and tomato and basil. I have started using the slow cooker to make soup and it’s much better than standing stirring a pot.

Never.

I was brought up on soup, it was the default lunch from September - May for my parents and both sets of grandparents. I was never a fan, the soup was OK and tasty enough but I had it so often it was like soup AGAIN. Must have totally sickened myself of it as I now never make it, never eat it and feel very cheated it's soup for a starter for a meal out.

I do wonder if it's better with tinned tomatoes. I will give it a go.

For really good tomato soup using fresh tomatoes they need to be roasted slowly with garlic and olive oil. Sprinkle salt and pepper on. A touch if balsamic vinegar will also really bring out the flavour.

Never. I hate soup

The only reason I buy ready made soups now is to benefit from the plastic tubs they come in, which I use to freeze my own home made soups in the perfect quantity.

This is my top tip though, use a marker pen (washable so you can reuse) to write the variety on the lid. I started doing this when I kept serving up parsnip soup from the freezer instead of dal.

Oh, yes. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. "We're having freezer surprise for dinner! It's one of soup, apple puree, or something random I've forgotten...."

Notimeforaname · 02/02/2025 15:30

Once or twice a week. All year round.

Aposterhasnoname · 02/02/2025 15:31

Daily, I make it on the slow cooker every couple of days and take it work for lunch.

Onlyconnection · 02/02/2025 15:31

I make soup about once a week, a huge pan and we have it for lunch that week. I was brought up with my mum making soup regularly and find it filling and warming so happy to have it for lunch. Only two of us at home so I keep it in the fridge and only warm up what we need that day. I circulate between 5 or 6 different souls depending on what is in season or on offer in the supermarket.

kiraric · 02/02/2025 15:33

Once a week, the night before our veg box delivery to use up the veg that I didn't get to in the week..

jacks11 · 02/02/2025 15:35

Once or twice a week, sometimes more. I tend to make big batches and freeze in different portion sizes (single/double/ family sized) so there is usually a few different soups to choose from.

vdbfamily · 02/02/2025 15:36

My DH makes a soup most weeks at this time of year, usually lentil and whatever veg needs using and it is usually quite spicy.

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 02/02/2025 15:41

Never, but I does love me a nice soup 🙂

supersun23 · 02/02/2025 15:41

Love soup, and have a soup maker. Would great to see some recipe links here for ideas!

Longwaysouth · 02/02/2025 15:42

In the winter 4 times weekly

Mirabai · 02/02/2025 15:47

Every week. I always have some soup in the fridge. Not that keen on many shop bought soups - I like Soupologie, Re:Nourish, Covent Garden mushroom soup, Waitrose Green Thai chicken soup and M&S chicken soup. But too many have cream in and others are not as nice as homemade.

My favs to make are leek and watercress, mushroom & chestnut, Tuscan bean soup, celeriac and apple, beetroot & horseradish. Just made some Jerusalem artichoke soup today.

cheezncrackers · 02/02/2025 15:48

In the winter I make it once or twice a week. It's cheap, filling, healthy and much nicer than any store-bought soup. Once it's made it's a very easy meal too. I love homemade soup!

Iloveautumnwinterchristmas · 02/02/2025 15:48

We have homemade soup everyday during the winter months. Today I made Iraqi lentil soup and it was delish and so simple and will last until Tuesday. Wednesday I'll make a nice Celery or Tomato and Basil. Love homemade soup! Another favourite is one my dear old mum made when we were kids which is chicken barley broth made with boneless chicken thighs, carrot, onion and celery. We sometimes have this with herby dumplings and it's so good!

kiraric · 02/02/2025 15:48

I'm too cheap to buy soup - every time I look at it, I think geez, I could make that for next to nothing and it would taste better

StormingNorman · 02/02/2025 15:49

During pumpkin season last year I made it weekly! Lovely with some crispy chorizo or crumbled blue cheese on top 😋

VodkaCola · 02/02/2025 15:53

Roasted red pepper soup.

Roughly chop 3 large red pepper, 1 onion and 4 gloves of garlic.
Spread out onto baking trays, drizzle with 2 tbsp oil and some salt and pepper.
Roast at 200 degrees for about 30 minutes.
Blend in a mixer or blender.
Pour into a pan and add vegetable stock until it's the consistency you want.
Check for seasoning then heat through before serving.

It's also delicious with a mixture of peppers, onions and tomatoes.

Please could you share your family soup recipe? We have one too after roast chicken and I'd love to know how other people make it 😊

I know you did not ask me specifically but I do two chicken soup versions after a roast.

One is a really simple chicken noodle- so onions, carrots, celery, mixed Italian dried herbs, decent chicken stock, chicken and then pasta. Occasionally I will use diced potato instead of pasta but 9 times out of ten pasta.

The other I do onions, celery, carrots, a little bit of frozen spinach, chicken stock, chicken (or sometimes herby chicken meatballs when I can find them which I prefer) with a fair whack of fresh lemon juice and a large handful of fresh dill sprinkled on the top Instead of using pasta I use rice and make it quite thick. That is more a summer chicken soup for me.

Unpaidviewer · 02/02/2025 15:53

Every week. We always have leftovers to freeze for lunches. Sometimes it's a proper type of soup and others it's just a veg soup to use up everything in the fridge before I go shopping.

Newtrix · 02/02/2025 15:53

5 days a week as we have it for lunch at work.

Milkmani8 · 02/02/2025 15:54

I usually make 3 soups a week, sometimes more in the winter. Cold soup in the summer. Not a fan of British soups like leek and potato, always a bit flavourless and too smooth. Thinking about it, if more people made soup there might be less beige oven food being bought.

DrDisrespect · 02/02/2025 15:54

2, 3 times a month maybe?
