Would you go ahead with birthday party today ? DD vomited

It's my DD 5th bday party today.

Huge party- 30 kids. It's at a venue with entertainers etc.

Last night she threw up at around 6pm and then again at 10pm. No fever and has been sleeping soundly since.

Would you cancel the party ?

I'm thinking to see how the morning goes, as the party isn't until 2 and then, go from there.

No way but if you do please inform all those attending so they can decide if they want to risk catching it ! Also let the venue hire know ! They will need to do an extra clean I think you'd be selfish to carry on with your plans but I have a phobia of sick !

FairGreyBird · 01/02/2025 07:32

I wouldn’t unless she vomits again. She might have ate a big lunch and have like nervous/excited belly for her party. See how she is this morning, I hope she’s ok & can enjoy her party

But what can you do if you need to take drugs that surprise your immune system AND have young kids ? Seriously ? What do you expect me to do ?

Not go to school plays, not hold birthday parties, go crazy every time they're sick ?

You just have to get on with it and hope for the best. I'm sick a lot, I vomit a lot too. But I can't stop sending my kids to school / nursery.

You should be able to minimise the risk you are exposed if everyone made responsible decisions and kept their children home. Conversely, other people should be able to minimise their risk and able to trust you to make equally responsible decisions. Do you really need this spelled out?

Dunnoburt · 01/02/2025 07:33

I'm just glad my daughter doesn't have a birthday party to go to today 😆

So my theory is that OP is actually the Husband that said that the party should go ahead. So it’s reverse because he wants to prove his wife wrong. Hence “I’ll come and update you all” because he wants to have one over her wife and all the women 😜

Macrodatarefiner · 01/02/2025 07:36

I've known several parents to be selfish enough to take kids out following day after they've been vomiting all night. I would be expected to go into work, nah OP, if your DD is OK go ahead.

It's just not the case to say "if it was a bug she'd be grey a poorly today". Plenty of people (some on this thread) have experienced one person puking once and bouncing back only for others in the family to be puking, grey and unwell for days. There are no hard and fast rules about how these things present or how one person may react vs another.

I agree, OP is a troll at worst, at best they state that know MN is "an anxious place" so have posted to have an argument because they know most people will tell them one thing and they'll say "Nope".

Honestly, I think if you throw up once but that is literally your only symptom, you don’t have a sickness bug! I’m sure plenty of people have experienced what you describe, but in those cases the actual bug was probably contracted from elsewhere.

OP’s daughter threw up twice, which is more suspect to me. Personally I find it hard to believe she doesn’t have any other symptoms. She’s probably in a similar state to my son and the OP is convincing herself she’s fine…

Just because I don't agree with you ? Why can I not have my own opinion? That in general, I've noticed MN is a very anxious place.

What did you post for then? 😂

@imisscashmere - it's entirely possible to throw up once because of a stomach bug. In fact, you can have Noro and have mild symptoms, be contagious and not be sick at all.

MyPearlCrow · 01/02/2025 07:40

cameheredor · 01/02/2025 06:11

Not at all ! That's such BS.

What else could it be? Does she regularly vomit for no reason?

it’s awful when things like this happen but Timmy bugs spread like wildfire among the young especially who aren’t as hygiene hot. Unless you want 30 kids and their families to have 48 hours off school and work next week, and an unpleasant time, if I were you I’d cancel.

But I can see your reluctance for sure.

This!!

CautiousLurker01 · 01/02/2025 07:42

I’d personally watch and wait to see how she is by mid morning?

My kids vomit due to lactose intolerance, over-excitement and migraine, so if I kept them off every time they vomited they’d have missed school for no reason a million times. I had to contact the school and explain that ‘vomiting’ was a regular, non viral occurrence in our home and that they would be coming in regardless and train my kids NOT to mention being sick.

Obviously, if you see any signs of it being illness related (temperature, diarrhoea) by midmorning, I’d then cancel.

Misty999 · 01/02/2025 07:43

I'd go ahead with party OP people are bonkers about sickness bugs and colds on Mumsnet. If they are all in school together then they'll get it anyway.

TheyAreNotAngelsTheyDontCareAtAll · 01/02/2025 07:43

Probably just excited.
In the absence of other signs and symptoms, it's unlikely to be a bug

You're actually asking this? Of course you cancel.

Catj2108 · 01/02/2025 07:45

cameheredor · 01/02/2025 06:16

Oh dear. She had a big lunch that sat in her stomach ( from a restaurant ) cupcake after.

I think that's the cause, not a bug.

Why are you asking for advice when you are clearly going to do what you want anyway

Shayisgreat · 01/02/2025 07:45

OP: AIBU

Everyone: Yes

OP: You're all wrong.

rainbowsky22 · 01/02/2025 07:45

Why have you asked a question to go against everyone who replies ? Your mind is clearly made up that you are not cancelling so I don't know why you've asked in the first place. For what it's worth, I would be livid if my child attended your daughters party who was sick last night.

Heronwatcher · 01/02/2025 07:46

I’d cancel. Norovirus is rife at the moment.

But if you do decide to go ahead you must tell people, and tell them the whole story.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 01/02/2025 07:46

It's clear that you just wanted people to agree with you that it's fine. Maybe you feel a twinge of guilt and wanted to be made to feel better about the choice you've already made. Well, you picked the wrong forum for that, I'm afraid.

Also, even if every kid there got horribly sick, there's no way you'd come back and say that. Come on! You're going to come back and say everything was fine, nobody got ill, everyone was all wrong and horrible, etc, no matter what happens. 🤣
