To ask Trump supporters how they defend this?

To be blunt, I don't understand how anyone can stand this guy. Nothing on earth would convince me to vote for him (I'm American), but he seems to have a surprising level of support on here. Over 60 people died, including a sickening number of children.

How is this ok?

“I have a plan to visit, not the site. Because you tell me, what’s the site? The water? You want me to go swimming?” Donald Trump responded during a White House press briefing on Thursday. The latest tragic mishap marks the deadliest US air disaster in two decades.

It was a press conference. He was asked a question. Does that constitute 'hounding'?

I don't know, I've not seen the conference so i don't know if he was asked the question once and that was his answer or if it was the same repeated question over and over when he said no, he wouldn't go to the site of the water, as some kind of point scoring from some journalist. You'll know though, you're the one who saw it.

@Megapint "Honestly, I don't really have an opinion on it. I don't invest much time in American politics."

You may live to regret that.

I agree. It's not "American politics" it is global, with an impact on the UK economy, society and politics as well. Not to mention the Ukraine, Palestine etc

How can you be so ignorant as to think these things do not relate to and affect each other.

Of course American politics has worldwide ramifications, but there’s nothing I can do to change any of it, so why dwell?

During the presidential election last year, I made a conscious decision not to follow the ins and outs as I had done in 2016 and 2020, and I was much happier for it.

Not to mention, for someone who claims not to be ignorant of world affairs, after three years of war there you still dont know that it’s just Ukraine, not ‘the Ukraine’?

The latter is offensive to Ukrainians, by the way.

yes me too. I was replying to someone else though, not you.

I make no claims at all. You'd be better off spending your time examining your own motives for correcting my grammar.

I think he's a very dangerous man. How he has conned a lot of people into voting for him is terrifying. I just don't know how the next 4 years are going to go. Ultimately what he does has an affect on a lot of people who don't live in America. I have sympathy for those who didn't vote for him and those who are going to suffer under his regime

Edited for spelling, it's not going well today

Edited

I'm not a trump supporter, but he didn't "con" anyone into anything.
The other party pretty much gifted him the presidency.

MushMonster · 31/01/2025 19:51

I am not a Trump supporter, neither I do want to defend him, but my DH has his speech about this tragic crash on, I can hear it all and Trump has not made any jokes, not mentioned any swimming, but actually his speech was about the poor people that lost their life, that they would investigate and avoid a repetition, then that things are better when he is President and something about people being recruited with several types of disabilities as air controllers, which he disagrees with. That is the polemic bit, I would say....
Where did you get the swimming comment news from?
The media has become an untrustworthy pile of shit, to be honest. One cannot longer trust one's shadow...

I think the real problem is that he immediately blamed a plane crash on the FAA hiring too many minorities.

ElatedShark · 31/01/2025 19:55

He also hasn't offered any condolences at all.

His first speech about the whole thing was to blame diversity, curious how he will blame people of colour/minorities now it's been shown all pilots and air controllers are white American men.

From his own mouth. The ACTUAL video proof is everywhere online/tv news go look

kellysjowls · 31/01/2025 20:03

To be honest I struggle to find this worse than all the million offensive and criminal things he's done.
But the voters were obviously at peace with that, and the person he is....

PointsSouth · 31/01/2025 20:11

Megapint · 31/01/2025 14:58

Honestly, I don't really have an opinion on it. I don't invest much time in American politics. I just think your question is a little disingenuous. If you want actual answers from Trump voters, go ask actual Trump voters.

The OP didn't ask the opinion of Trump voters. He asked the opinion of MN users.

Like any US President, Trump's a global figure and what he says and does carries global significance. We in the UK may not be able to do much about it, but we can certainly think about it and talk about it. If we want. Which some of us do. And you might not.

Coolasfeck · 31/01/2025 20:11

Yes the poor families, many of whom’s loved ones are still in a cold, dark river. He has no empathy, it’s all about him and scoring cheap points.

And now he’s put tariffs on multiple countries which will drive up the price of goods for millions of ordinary people.

It’s all a game for Trump and the tech oligarchs.

And millions of people voted for this, not because they thought their lives would be better, but because they thought others would suffer.

Sarah2891 · 31/01/2025 20:12

YANBU. He's despicable and so is anyone who supports him..

BoldRed · 31/01/2025 20:16

He’s a horror. Those poor people have only just died and he’s using their deaths for political gain and making the most appalling ‘jokes’. It’s depressing how much he debases his office.

MsReacher2025 · 31/01/2025 20:18

Are you genuinely wondering how it wd feel to have a "loved one" involved?? Or are you using the tragedy to score more points about a politician you hate?

What he said was a response ... probably to a jibe or a heckle or a sneery "question" - and likely designed to put down an aggressive questioner rather than as a message to the victims' families. But I haven't clicked your link as I don't care.

CheeseyOnionPie · 31/01/2025 20:28

fanaticalfairy · 31/01/2025 14:33

He's just saying he won't go to the water site, but stay in land... What's the problem?

Yeah ok buddy

MsReacher2025 · 31/01/2025 20:31

ElatedShark · 31/01/2025 19:55

He also hasn't offered any condolences at all.

His first speech about the whole thing was to blame diversity, curious how he will blame people of colour/minorities now it's been shown all pilots and air controllers are white American men.

He gave a speech fairly soon after in which he offered condolences and thanked the emergency services. He made a point of mentioning people from the specific places, (Russia, Wichita, Washington), who were on the plane and said the whole country was in mourning.

Bits from what he said:
A real tragedy... they've done a phenomenal job - so quick so fast.... this was a dark and excruciating night.. as one nation we grieve for every precious soul - we are a nation in mourning... For the family members -- very, very ,sorry we can only begin to imagine the agony.... our prayers are with you now... and to offer you our devotion our love and our support..."

It's not a quote it's just what I gleaned from the speech and I didn't get all of it ... but to say he never mentioned the families simply isn't true.

I'm not a American and can't say I'd have voted for him if I were an American. His politics worry me. You may love him or hate him - but the facts are important.

YANBU. He's despicable and so is anyone who supports him..

77 million Americans are despicable?

Happyher · 31/01/2025 20:40

He has no propriety, integrity, courtesy, no idea what being a leader is about. He reads the appropriate statements more intelligent people have written for him like a seven year old reading to his class and then the buffoon goes off on some weird inappropriate rant spewing his prejudices and hatred.

God help us all

19751974P · 31/01/2025 20:41

If I was a family of a victim I would be campaigning to keep him away from the crash site. His insensitivity, disrespect and crassness are breathtaking.

Notonthestairs · 31/01/2025 20:43

"“Because you tell me, what’s the site? The water? You want me to go swimming?”

It was neither a respectful or statesmanlike response to a very easy and predictable question.

A straightforward response of "I'll visit when it's appropriate to do so, right now I am concentrating on offering my full support to the emergency services and families" etc

Nobody expected him to say he's going straightaway and certainly nobody expected him to get in the river.
