To ask Trump supporters how they defend this?

To be blunt, I don't understand how anyone can stand this guy. Nothing on earth would convince me to vote for him (I'm American), but he seems to have a surprising level of support on here. Over 60 people died, including a sickening number of children.

How is this ok?

“I have a plan to visit, not the site. Because you tell me, what’s the site? The water? You want me to go swimming?” Donald Trump responded during a White House press briefing on Thursday. The latest tragic mishap marks the deadliest US air disaster in two decades.

Thing is, anybody who actually agrees with anything Trump does, probably knows there's no point whatsoever in defending him on Mumsnet.
I speak from experience.

Megapint · 31/01/2025 14:58

Honestly, I don't really have an opinion on it. I don't invest much time in American politics. I just think your question is a little disingenuous. If you want actual answers from Trump voters, go ask actual Trump voters.

menopausalfart · 31/01/2025 14:58

I don't expect anything less from him.
He's evil and good people recognise this.

NotOneOfTheInCrowd · 31/01/2025 14:59

Can you imagine what he would have been like if he’d been in power on 9/11?

Whatever people voted for in regards to his politics statements, he is a genuine embarrassment. Even people who voted for him must see that, surely?

There were plenty of Trump voters and supporters on MN crowing about his victory in recent weeks.

Because I want opinions from people who support him but have, for the most part, not been in a position to have voted for him. Actual voters will have made their decisions based on more immediate factors that they perceive as potentially having a direct consequence for their own lives. I would like to know what people not in that position see in him.

Am I allowed to continue to post? Or does my reasoning not meet your bar?

I do know people who voted for him but I don't know many who really support him. I know people who absolutely definitely did not want him but that's who the Republicans put up and they wanted to vote republican. Apart from a couple of people who are seriously out of touch it was a negative vote rather than positive. The one's who positively voted Trump are very much isolated, suffering from inflation issues and blaming the biden administration. Trump will make everything alright in their world again. Those people on YouTube keep telling them so. These are the sort of people who don't watch TV, don't look at news sites so any information they get is very filtered, they just won't see or hear about his comments.

Paganpentacle · 31/01/2025 15:14

He's a dangerous lunatic surrounded by dangerous lunatics and ' Yes' men.
This is not going to end well... unless he gets assassinated.

TokyoSushi · 31/01/2025 15:18

He's been particularly appalling about this plane crash. Even more appalling than usual.

I listened to David French (who's an anti-Trump conservative who writes for the NYT but lives in Tennessee, which you might already know) talking about this right before the election. He was saying that lots of people in his church and town don't get any information other than what's on Fox News.

Do you think the people you know would have a negative reaction to Trump's statement if they heard it? Or find a way to shrug it off?

He's just saying he won't go to the water site, but stay in land... What's the problem?

Ffs - do you really think the vocabulary and demeanour is that of a respected statesman in the aftermath of a disaster?

Genuinely, did that quote make you laugh? I'm assuming not, but what reaction did you have?

@snugsnug1 I'm not sure they'd believe it, MSM is all lies and aren't to be trusted. People are just trying to destroy him. They'd take it all as a conspiracy against him. Even if shown the original video they would probably claim it's doctored. To be honest they are that removed from the real world that it would just prove to them that he is right and the left are just scared of him and trying to destroy him because he's so wonderful. These are not people who could be classed as having a lot of interactions with other people.

He's a complete psychopath with zero empathy.

I was sure he'd never get in power again after his criminal cases. I was wrong. Very wrong.

I don't understand the constitution how can he be president with his record of court cases how can he be seen.as an upstanding person to run a country it's baffling,

He's lacking in any sort of moral fibre and he shouldn't be allowed to speak in public

Oh there's people in UK and Ireland who think he's a great rebel ' sticking it to the Man' and protecting them from the Deep State. I have one in my family. They are simply immune to facts or logic.
' I've just met the world's greatest con artist - his name is Malcolm McClaren' said Johnny Thunders. We have a new champion. Time is a remorseless enemy though....

You know what? The most disturbing thing is when people politicise a tragic accident.

I think he’s losing his mental capacity (such as it is). I wouldn’t be surprised if he has early stage dementia.

He’s a psycho narc anyway but surely even his ardent voters must be questioning him.

derxa · 31/01/2025 15:31

I don’t support Trump and think his handling of this tragedy has been terrible. However why on earth would he go to site of the crash. Bodies are still being recovered from the river.

Because it's not unusual for US presidents to visit disaster sites and console victims and their families and this one is about a mile from the White House. I don't know that the question meant right at this very instant. I don't think anyone was expecting him to pull victims out of the river.

And, if he didn't think it was the time, I would expect someone in his position to say something along the lines of, 'I don't think it would be appropriate for me to be there while the recovery operation is still ongoing but my heart goes out to the victims and their families and I will be there as soon as the moment is right.'

Also the fact he blamed the accident on “diversity and inclusion policies” brought in by Obama and Biden.
He's an absolutely VILE man.

That's the problem here, not the swimming distraction.
