A man called me stupid in front of my daughter

Springsunshine28 · 31/01/2025 13:50

As I was exiting the lift with my two-year-old in the pram, another pram went out ahead of us. Since I was backing out, I didn’t realize they were still near the elevator entrance, and I accidentally bumped into the woman with the other pram. I was looking at my phone while maneuvering, but I immediately apologized. However, her husband deliberately said, "She’s on her phone, she’s stupid." My little girl heard it and repeated, "Mum, are you stupid." I was absolutely fuming and really wanted to retaliate. I was so angry and told him that I already apologized and I think you're stupid and rude. I know I should have just ignored it but it really made me so angry.

Well I would expect anybody with half a brain to not be gawping at their mobile phone while pushing a heavy buggy out of a lift.

Although the types of parents doing this don't usually have much of a brain, to be fair.

She was expecting a call from her GP and unfortunately it rang just then.

It can happen, our GP gets very annoyed when calls aren’t answered.

It’s not like she was scrolling Mumsnet.

Why aren’t you criticising the father for not being Father of the Year by calling someone stupid in front of his child?

Why the double standard?

There has been zero reference to the man having a child with him. Just a wife.

She wasn’t “pushing a heavy buggy”. It’s a bit where you keep claiming her buggy hit someone when it didn’t. Also LOL at you talking like it’s getting by a car or something 😂 so you never once took your eye of the ball?

How do you cope in busy crowds? Must be so stressful for someone with such a sensitive disposition that being knocked into requires verbal abuse

Ok but he still said it in front of a child? Why is that acceptable to you?

Edit: he did have a child with him!

What, the convenient phone call from the GP that was only brought up once it became apparent the thread wasn't going the way the OP hoped? I'm not 100% convinced on that one I'm afraid!

Aren't you an angel?

Plenty of WOMEN would call her all sorts if she did that. Stop making it a gender issue

WTF. Are you quite well?

When have I made it a gender issue? I was just telling a story about how even in actual harmful situations there’s no need to kick off. i didn’t even mention MEN. And im sure some WOMEN would indeed call her all sorts but what’s that got to do with anything?

Did you reply to the wrong post?

If you disbelieve the OP then what’s the point of engaging with the thread?

A) It wasn't his child.
B) He didn't even say it to the OP, he said it to his wife.

I'm a fairly overprotective parent but I don't think I could get worked up about my kids hearing the word 'stupid' out in public.

FallOfTheHouseOfUtterlyButterly · 31/01/2025 21:22

And he didn't say it TO her. "She is stupid" is directly NOT aimed at her

She then directly addressed him, calling him names

Which meant she escalated it

They’ve got that bit wrong, he did have a child with him. That poster is getting too angry about the World’s Heaviest Most Dangerous Buggy to read properly. She also thought the OP rammed the wife with a buggy when she didn’t. She was backing out the lift.

Kibble29 · 31/01/2025 21:23

Obviously this guy didn’t know you were waiting on a call or whatever. I imagine to him, you were blindly backing out of a small space while engrossed in your phone, and bumped into his wife/baby’s pram. (It’s not really clear who you bumped into).

I’d have thought the same as he did. Probably wouldn’t have said it to you if you apologised, but I’d definitely have thought you were an idiot.

Given your lack of comprehension, that 100% conviction is about 4% effective

See I don’t think that we should just take abuse and not stand up for ourselves. At all. It’s a shame you would just let yourself be walked all over but I admire people who don’t

Out of interest, how would you react if some bloke rammed into you with a buggy while his nose was stuck in his phone?

OP didn’t ram into anyone with her buggy.

But if this happened and he apologised, because I’m a grown woman and not a weirdo, I’d accept it and move on with my life. I wouldn’t be all maiden-like or angry and chunter in calling him names because I’m not a big baby. You can’t turn back time so an apology is the next best thing

What would you do?

If someone criticises me by calling out my behaviour - no matter what words they use, because words are just words- I evaluate the situation like this -

  1. Is there truth in what they're saying? If so I should change my behaviour.
  2. If what they are saying seems unfounded or simply a matter of opinion - do I know them well and do they know me well. If not then I discount their opinion.
  3. If I know them well and they know me well, I think about how much I respect their wisdom, intellect, kindness, opinions. If I don't respect them...I discount their opinion.
  4. If I respect them then I go to step one. And change my behaviour.

@Springsunshine28 don't let someone define your entire being in a one second exchange. But equally learn from the incident. It's fine. You're still a fantastic human being who had a 30 second blip in concentration.

You literally just had a go at OP for saying ‘stupid’ in front of her child?

So it’s ok if a man says it but not ok if a woman says it? Hilarious 😂

Eh?? It was his wife pushing her own buggy so presumably the child was his. Or do you somehow have information that this man is not indeed the father? Had Mrs Bumped Into been shagging the milkman? Maybe that’s why her DH is so angry at the world

Right so I can go around calling the people standing next to me dickheads to someone else and they have no right of reply because I wasn’t saying it to them?

He said it loudly enough for her toddler to hear. He escalated by having a little pathetic tantrum

It’s a thread about a man verbally abusing a woman. Are we supposed to say “oh what a gent”?

Also who sounded the MRA incel klaxon?

Ah but of course. I must be a man 😒
