To be really glad I don't live in America right now

I really feel for ordinary Americans. It's bad enough on this side of the Channel, hearing daily about Trump's latest petty, spiteful, idiotic bullshit - that rant against the Bishop who asked him to have mercy on immigrants, the ridiculous and insulting attempt to blame 'diversity' for the plane crash - but living under it must be so much worse. And heaven help you if you're LGBT or a woman. Or an immigrant. Or not white. Or poor. Or anyone else Trump and his freakshow of a government despises. I moan about the UK all the time, like everyone else who lives here, because god knows it's far from perfect, but at least we don't have a government in charge who is trying to strip huge swathes of the population of their rights and citizenship.

I’m still waiting for @AlertBrickBear to tell me how many ICE raids have occurred at schools.

and @izimbra to back up their claim that I am misrepresenting information

I have an idea 💡 Izimbra should challenge Alertbrickbear and save me some time! 😁

The Americans I know all feel sorry for us over here in the UK. Many US citizens who have spent their working lives visiting the UK reguarly are appalled at what it has become.
Save your pity OP, we have enough problems of our own.

Yeah, I agree Brexit and 14 years of Tory corruption and stealing from the till have got us here. Don't you agree , Maggie?

Trump has clearly stated that he will NOT be signing any abortion ban. He is leaving it to the states. 37 states are ok with abortion. 13 only allow abortion in extreme circumstances. Each state has decided for itself. He will not overturn the states decisions, either way.

19 states ban or limit abortion. We don't even scan until 20 weeks, just to give you an idea of how early the restrictions are.

BruFord · 02/02/2025 20:08

We don’t even scan until 20 weeks.

@TankFlyBossW4lk Does that differ by state? Where I live, it’s standard to have a scan during the first trimester, typically by 10 weeks. I don’t know about other states though.

Is implying that 77 million of your fellow Americans are insane for thinking differently to you helpful do you think?

Why do you persist in normalising a felon and an insurrectionist being voted into one of the most powerful positions on Earth. This is insanity.

Slytherinnnnn · 02/02/2025 20:10

@TankFlyBossW4lk I had three scans before 19 weeks with one of my pregnancies in the US.

@saltinesandcoffeecups All sorts of rumors are flying around. The alleged ICE raid at a Chicago school turned out to be officials investigating a security threat, nothing to do with immigration. Another rumored raid was a paramedic responding to a health emergency.

DH and I have a theory that it probably suits the administration to let these rumors proliferate, because they’ll deter people trying to cross the borders. Then the government will claim credit for this.

You know what helps with rumors? Information and facts. Just like the ones I got by googling ice raids in schools and scanning 5 news articles from various sources both left leaning and right leaning.

That took me all of 3-5 minutes before posing my question to @AlertBrickBear

You know how long it would have taken AlertBrickBear to do the same. I’m guessing the same 3-5 minutes. I’m assuming they are an intelligent person who can read and digest news stories.

@izimbra I do the same before posting other things as well. There were at least 3 things I was going to post on this and the tariff thread that I didn’t, because what I thought I knew was incorrect on my facts.

BruFord · 02/02/2025 21:13

“Trump won the electoral college AND the popular vote; his party also won both houses of Congress” - this is 100% true. The 30% of Americans who voted for him are racists who don’t care if a rapist and felon is President, as long as a black woman didn’t become President. I think it’s a good thing, its time people see the consequences of racism today. Let Trump ruin the country, let those who voted for him suffer.

Twelve weeks is not an abortion ban. That’s the limit found in most of Europe tbh

I don't follow the algorithms and I have followed no accounts. I just have a lurker account. I go looking.

Musk may indeed be pushing certain posts, but the other side of the debate and people's actual, uncensored beliefs are all there for the reading.

The point was that the OP was upset that Farage has a platform, seems to think the BBC should have censored him. My point was that he has 2.2 million followers on Twitter and the BBC is no longer the go to for news.

Edited

Indeed, trying to pretend that social media is not now the main source of news is a nonsense.

Mainstream or 'legacy' media as Musk puts it is no longer (for right or wrong) trusted by vast swathes of the electorate.

You can rant, you can rave, and you can try to crush dissent. But when has that ever worked? You must meet the people Where. They. Are.

And whether you like it or not, a LOT of them are on X. And they are voting, as is their right. If you strangle X, they will set up an alternative, and so on.

What is really interesting to me, is that nothing ever really changes does it? Sure, the tools may have changed. But people are the same. This could all have happened in Ancient Rome, or Egypt, or Mesoptamia. Civilisations appear to have a rythym to them. I can't decide whether that comforts or frustrates me.

It was quite clear that you support Trump.

In which context is the quote not disgusting? When it’s Arabs or Mexicans and not white Trump supporters? When it was black people getting killed by police?

I’d really like to know what context it is that you feel this quote is acceptable?

My view is that conflict in the US in inevitable. Trump supporters are bad for the country and there will be conflict and blood spilled before people realise that one race isn’t superior and racism doesn’t allow peaceful coexistence.

The fact is that people voted Trump in is pushback against loss of privilege. Not surprising but also good for the world in general. It was time American power globally was reined in and this is what Trump will do with his stupid actions.

ps: I am not American.

Godwin's law is proven correct again.

"Godwin's law can be applied mistakenly or abused as a distraction, a diversion, or even censorship, when miscasting an opponent's argument as hyperbole even when the comparison made by the argument is appropriate.[9] Godwin has criticized the over-application of the adage, claiming that it does not articulate a fallacy, but rather is intended to reduce the frequency of inappropriate and hyperbolic comparisons:"

But they’re talking to themselves on X, surely anybody with half a brain avoids it now and that is only set to increase.

"They" are, are "they"? And how many of "them" are there? Enough to swing an election in one of the most powerful nations in the world?

To have an effect in Europe? If "they" are so stupid and irrelevant and all the clever people have stopped listening to "them" anyway, then whats the problem?

Feeling clever and superior might give you a warm smug feeling. But it would be unwise to ignore "them".

Numbers are what matter. If enough people want things to be a certain way, and are willing to push hard enough then that is how it is going to go. You get those numbers to your side by convincing them, by speaking to them, by guiding them.

If X was such an irrelevant echo chamber then governments around the world wouldn't be so afraid of it.

Why? Most are happy so far

blood spilled before people realise that one race isn’t superior and racism doesn’t allow peaceful coexistence

Give examples of this belief. Honestly you sound like you trade in very fake ideas about America.

I liked his policies and voted for them. Very pleased so fae

Could you outline which policies of Trumps you particular liked which got you to vote for him?

You actually think the US is "quitting the role of ‘world police’ on our own terms". Is that what the, erm, suggestions of taking over other countries is?

His plans have caused one of my closest friends to have to close down her linkedin, and her company remove her details from their website as she started receiving death threats as she works around getting disabled people into work. I've heard this a lot and whilst it's understandable to a degree, it's naive IMO. This is unpopular to say but if the US gives up on its hegemony, it will leave a power vacuum - which will promptly filled. The issue is not about getting rid of US hegemony and everyone fends for themselves, it's whose hegemony will it be replaced with. I have some thoughts and I think 99.9% of Westerners will not like it. I'm not an imperialist. I hate empires. But I'm a realist.

AnonymousBleep · 03/02/2025 11:28

It's just astonishing that it's literally in the UK news right now that we may avoid tariffs from the USA because Starmer has been 'nice' to Trump. How can anyone respect a leader who makes international business decisions based on such teenagery trivia? (Although it sounds as if Trump also isn't sure of the difference between the EU and the UK so we shouldn't go counting our chickens over here just yet).

Also watching him bang on about helicopters and how to fly them, as his tone-deaf response to the air crash tragedy, was jaw-dropping. The man is an absolute bonafide idiot.

The Western democracies are fading/falling. As the US becomes more isolationist my money is on either China or India progressing their power.

I don't think any of the Middle Eastern countries have the clout, nor the resources and I think Russia is probably already too isolated.

Europe is weak. The West has grown fat and weak due to such a long period of prosperity, falling birthrates and immigration policies which are shaking the foundations of their cultures are having an effect (it doesnt matter whether you think this is OK or not, the outcome is that society is divided and destabilised which makes you an easy target) China may also be a bit sluggish. But India is not.

As I said, it is fascinating - I went full nihilist a while ago. Just gonna watch the whole lot burn - we are all fucked anyway.

No, I'm not hoping, I'm just saying that this is what WILL happen. Wait, watch and see. The insurrection was a hint of what will come.

Yes, Trump supporters are happy so far. But the consequences of his trade wars haven't hit yet. There is already pushback from business leaders on his tariffs.

Don't say no one knew what will happen. People without the racist lens can see what will happen. That is the point I'm trying to make. It's simple logic, and not hard to see. You piss off the rest of the world, they will all gang up against you. Trump supporters have a superiority complex and their day of reckoning will come.
