People using our drive to turn around

Allthenameshavegone1972 · 29/01/2025 12:51

We live in a cul de sac with a primary school at the end. Occasionally we have caught people on camera using our drive to turn around, but not at school times. There is no reason to use our drive, there us plenty of road space. We've just spent a lot of money last year on having it blocked page.
This is really irritating me, it's just cheeky & lazy. Would I sound petty if I put it onto the village Facebook page?
I don't want to sound petty to the rest of the village, but if this is some parent from thd school who thinks they're entitled, I want them to stop.

People do this in our drive sometimes it doesn't bother us. I can't see the issue unless they are blocking your drive when you want to get in or out

FishMouse · 29/01/2025 13:40

We put traffic cones across ours. It's annoying to have to move them though. Would like a gate ideally.

whycantibeselfishforonce · 29/01/2025 13:41

Get one of those little chains that you can put across your driveway with a sign dangling in the middle saying no turning so people won't be able to turn. Or just put up a sign that says no turning. It will probably stop a few but others probably won't give a shit and will just do it anyway!

HeartandSeoul · 29/01/2025 13:42

I fully understand why you are annoyed OP, as we had a neighbour using our drive for turning his car. I put some large gnomes in his way (the only solution I could come up with that wouldn’t hinder us too), and he ended up driving over them on two separate occasions!! He said he didn’t see them 😭.

We had a word with him, but he still kept doing it. There is plenty of room to turn the car around without using our drive, but he said he couldn’t do it. However, recently we haven’t seen him do it quite as much (hardly at all), so my gnomes live to see another day 😁.

I hope you manage to sort it soon.

Nonaynevernomore · 29/01/2025 13:43

Don’t watch the footage!

PilgriminProgress · 29/01/2025 13:44

If specific cars are repeatedly using your drive, you can report it to 101 (non-emergency police) for antisocial behavior. Some local councils also have reporting systems for nuisance driving.

SerendipityJane · 29/01/2025 13:44

SlugsWon · 29/01/2025 12:54

Why does it bother you?

Our drives tarmac was been ripped up by cars turning there. Call me prissy but why should I pay for their convenience ?

LillyPJ · 29/01/2025 13:44

Block paving isn't cheap and it's your private property so I think you're entitled to be annoyed. Just put something on the drive or a chain across to block it.

JustMyView13 · 29/01/2025 13:46

We get this, but less often as we’re not near a school. It bugs me too. More than it should.

The reason it bugs me is because so many people ‘hit’ cars these days & drive off, I think on your own drive you should at least be safe. But sadly that’s not the case.

I also have to remind myself it’s a sign of being a grumpy old adult, and I need to get a grip 😂 First world problems and all that!

LillyPJ · 29/01/2025 13:49

MySpringAir · 29/01/2025 13:07

Isn't there an unspoken agreement that we might at times have to use someone else's drive to turn around, and so we accept that someone might have to use ours for the same reason - a quid pro quo situation?

I've never heard of such an agreement! And there really aren't times when we really have to trespass on someone else's property. If you're driving a car, you've got the road to turn round in - maybe a bit more effort and/or skill, but also more polite.

StormingNorman · 29/01/2025 13:49

You need spike strips @Allthenameshavegone1972

Place them at the end of the drive. Extreme but people will stop. They’ll ignore your signs but nobody wants a puncture. Just put a sign up saying you’ve put the strip down.

BarbadosItsCloserThanYouThink · 29/01/2025 13:50

I think you’re wasting your energy letting this bother you.

Haroldwilson · 29/01/2025 13:51

Oh no, someone drove on your drive briefly. Shocking.

Did you know block paving increases flood risk and reduces biodiversity?

CosyDenimShark · 29/01/2025 13:52

It does annoy me too if I'm honest. We're the last house in a small cul de sac so it happens quite often. We've spent a lot of money on a new stamped concrete driveway but the most annoying element to it is that it sets my dog off barking for 10 minutes each time!

Hopelesscase32 · 29/01/2025 13:53

Why is it such a big deal? As long as they are not actually parking in your driveway what's the harm

Bayonetlightbulb · 29/01/2025 13:53

People sometimes turn in my drive, it doesn't bother me at all but then maybe it would if I had expensive block paving. What is the expected lifespan of block paving? How many times can it be driven over before it needs replaced? Might give you some perspective over whether it is actually a big problem or not?

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 29/01/2025 13:58

My dad has had to have bollards put in as more and more people were using his drive to turn round in, including heavy vehicles. One lorry actually reversed into his extension, denied it and then hurled abuse at my brother when he went out to see what was going on 😣

He's had the bollards reversed into repeatedly since they were put in. Some people are just twats.

SharpOpalNewt · 29/01/2025 14:01

I wouldn't go on someone's drive unless I had to, nor would I choose to live somewhere where this was going to bother me.

I live off a narrow country lane and hate all the (very few) residents along who have put bollards on the drive way or hidden in the hedge to make it harder to get past when there are cars going in each direction.

They are big houses and they don't have to live there.

SlugsWon · 29/01/2025 13:27

To me you are, yes. So many better things to give headspace to. Posting on Facebook won't solve this. Just stop watching your CCTV footage, ignore it, and it will go away. You are unlikely to ever notice the additional wear and tear, it's a drive designed to be driven on. Just chalk it up to one of those things that comes with living amongst other people and move on

This,it would not even cross my mind that it would annoy people... definitely switch your doorbell thingy off !

WoolySnail · 29/01/2025 14:06

viques · 29/01/2025 13:29

Are they actually daring to venture onto your drive or are they just using the dropped kerb and the councils pedestrian footpath to make the turn?

Asking for a friend.

There is no reason to use our drive, there us plenty of road space. We've just spent a lot of money last year on having it blocked page.

Presume that should read paved, so it must be the drive as I doubt they paid for or were allowed to block pave the pavement 😂

Considerably less than the concrete slab that was there beforehand or asphalt or resin and they have to put in a proper drainage system. We couldn't have stones as it slopes slighlty and half of it would end up in the road. People have to have something solid and hard-wearing on their drives. It isn't like I replaced the front garden with concrete. In fact I did the opposite and got rid of hard standing concrete slabs and planted native plants and grass in the front before the actual drive was done alongside the garden.

I think you should have a special sensor so that every time a ‘rogue’ car comes on your drive - the Aswad song ‘Don’t Turn Around’ would start blasting out at high volume, drawing attention to the driver and making them really self conscious.

But then again, that’s my sense of humour ..

Cracking idea😂 but you might get a lot of Aswad fans turning up.

Our neighbour keeps driving/walking over our plants because his parking space is too tight, that's proper cuntyfuckery.

user1471523071 · 29/01/2025 14:07

The standard of driving has become so low that no one seems to want to take the time to do a turn in the road, and instead mount the pavement or go on someone's drive so it's quicker to turn. We've had cars using our driveway and due to the way our living room is, if it's dark we get blasted by car lights even through curtains. Our drive is also our path, so also have had my kids walking on the driveway while a lazy driver tried to turn and nearly knock them over. Apparently he couldn't see them. Just sheer entitlement of some people.

You need something solid and heavy that will damage his car if he hits/runs over it 😁

Oh my goodness, get a life! no ones parking in your drive are they?

Yes.
They can hardly fly to turn around in a cul-de-sac.
