What's your thoughts on asylum seekers?

Lynds778 · 28/01/2025 09:09

I'm all for offering asylum to those genuinely in need but I've seen a lot of negative media recently around 'fake' asylum seekers; people pretending to be from war-torn countries etc to gain entry to the country. Also videos of men giving advice for future asylum seekers on where to say you're from so that you can get in.

Also seen a lot of uproar from local communities about asylum seekers behaving anti-socially, most recently hanging around outside a primary school in Deanshanger and it's got me worried.
I'm also wondering why the large majority of asylum seekers are men and there are less women and children?

So, what's your opinion?

Also, this isn't a racist post. I would have the exact same concerns if these were white asylum seekers from Germany for example. The worry is the system is being abused by some and that we are a bit too lax when it comes to documentation and monitoring of asylum seekers.

Some posters seem to want the UK to shift further and further to the right and to embrace Reform's policy of scapegoating and othering.

Given what was being marked yesterday, it seems very sad that some have learned nothing from the past.

Because it’s the quickest way (and becoming a convention on here)?
Not sure why you bothered with a whole post to tell me you don’t like my posting style is it because you know your point was a bit silly?

Why was my point silly? It shows that at least 40,000 asylum seekers were allowed to stay in the UK for political expediency/to hit Home Office targets under the last Labour government, rather than on the merits of their applications. No doubt the last government did something similar - as will the current government.

cardibach · 28/01/2025 21:01

BBC are not predominantly left, @DearDarcy
Their board comprises actual Tories.
The numbers depend on how it was asked, in what context, and what else was in the press at the time. I suspect Elon’s froth might have affected a recent vote.

I think the country is bursting at the seams. The NHS can't cope, no housing souring bills etc

We need to shut the boarders ans arart deporting all the men/criminals in the hotels costing us thousands etc and take care of the ppl actually paying into the economy.

What has the numbers staying under the last Labour government for to do with anything though? That’s why it’s silly. Plus those asylum seekers contributed, so not all bad, eh?

EasternStandard · 28/01/2025 21:03

Outlier in what way? I’m not aware of any proposals to loosen borders

They are loose, particularly now. And comparatively more attractive as other countries become more hardline.

Traffickers sell based on ease. As others get harsher we move up the selling list. All it takes is a flag icon and currency sign on SM and very little else.

We aren’t ’bursting at the seams’. Problems with infrastructure are down to lack of investment and proper management over 14 years of Tory rule.

To all the ‘do gooders’ on this thread, I ask you some questions:

  • Do you genuinely believe the majority of boats arriving in this country are arriving here from war torn countries full of deprivation? If so, where are the elderly, where are the women and children? Surely to god if if was THAT bad they wouldn’t leave their dear families behind.
  • Why are they not seeking asylum in France and nearing countries?
  • Are you willing to take in the grown men that are arriving here every day into your homes? If not where do you suppose they are housed and who do you suppose pays the upkeep of all this?

It’s not about being a ‘Bigot’ or a ‘Racist’ it’s about looking after ourselves, our family and British born, tax paying, hard working citizens of this country that is already on its knees. The country that we all one day will be leaving to our children and grandchildren. We cannot keep letting in unlimited amounts of unvetted illegal migrants into this country, where is the line?!!!!!

It’s not about legal migrants, who want to contribute to our system and abide by the British ways of living, we all know who this is about and people have had enough.

There was a poll on T.V a couple of weeks ago that asked ‘is Multiculturalism working in the U.K ‘ and 95% of people said no.

👏👏👏

Wheredidallthegoodmengo · 28/01/2025 21:05

My thoughts on asylum seekers are based on my own, more than three year experience of actually working with them on a day to day basis. Personally, I have found that a more reliable source than any other main stream media.

cardibach · 28/01/2025 21:05

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 28/01/2025 21:03

👏👏👏

Since the majority of asylum claims are granted, the rest of your points become a bit moot.
They don’t have to seek asylum in France, or anywhere else.
Most asylum seekers stay in countries near their country of origin.
We take fewer per capita than many (most? Haven’t checked my figures lately) European countries.

PandoraSox · 28/01/2025 21:05

DearDarcy · 28/01/2025 20:59

It was BBC! Which are predominately ‘left’

Surprised they didn’t fiddle the numbers but the numbers don’t lie. It was also on GB news.

Not sure if this link will work but it’s the clip of it being announced on the Sunday Morning Show

Yes, I found it earlier and we discussed it a few posts ago.

If we shut the boarders the NHS will collapse, immigration is what is keeping the NHS hoing

750 immigrants are students each year

20,000 asylum seeks arrive by boat each year, much as you want to blame them for the NhS failures- it’s just not possible 20,000 are causing nhs to fsil

Wheredidallthegoodmengo · 28/01/2025 21:09

@DearDarcy since you have asked questions, I ask you one back. How many asylum seekers do you know personally? On a day to day basis? A simple “ none” will suffice or if I’m wrong, how many?

Totally agree with you that the Tories have obliterated public services. Why don't the public go after the Royal family. Why are they allowed lo to continue creaming off the public .

I also want real reliable statistics on numbers entering on boats. If there were a policy to turn away boats and re settle them, there is the probability I could favour that. But I'd need to be sure that we know where they're getting sent to and how exactly is that going to be physically managed.

I would be in favour of deportation for criminals with dual nationalty ( high level crime only) but the fact is this is no easy thing to do.

My fear is this all spreads to other vulnerable groups like the poor and disabled. I'm in that group. We can't trust the ideology of any of these people sadly. No easy answers.

I’ve asked how asylum seekers have affect their life in the last 3yesrs, it’s not been answered

We can’t turn away boats. We have an obligation under the refugee convention to assess asylum seekers.

Reform have this in their Policy commitments. Would it be legally impossible even if they were in power? I genuinely don't know the answer.

Politicians!!

Edit - I can't edit my original post but I see now how that reads. No I don't mean asylum seekers who come from all places. To be clear - I don't trust the true ideology and beliefs that these Politicians who are so out of touch with us actually have deep down.

Maddy70 · 28/01/2025 21:14

Ignore the right wing press. Asylum seekers are fleeing wars etc. They aren't economic migrants no matter what garage et al say.
They are processed to ascertain this and if they aren't genuine asylum seekers they are sent back.

Well, the next time a poster (or an MP) refers to something from 2010 you can tell them they are being silly.
We have no idea whether those asylum seekers contributed or not, or whether they were working on the black market.
