Hairdresser ruined my top

So, I had an appointment at the hairdresser at the weekend. Colour, cut, blow dry. All fine until I got home and realised that the back of my top near the neck was all stained (I’m assuming from the dye). I would usually be annoyed, but I was even more annoyed as I had only bought the top the previous day. I messaged my hairdresser about it, with a photo and asking whether they recommend that customers wear an old top to appointments as this had happened to mine. I thought she may offer to replace it. She didn’t, she just sorry that happened. The more I think about it, the more p*ed off I am! It wasn’t an expensive top or anything, so I wasn’t out in anything fancy but it is ruined and I can’t use it now. AIBU for thinking they should offer to replace it or knock some money off my next appointment as a goodwill gesture?? Or should I have worn an old top that I didn’t mind getting ruined??

I think some of these responses are unnecessarily harsh.
As a previous poster who works in the hairdressing industry said, they are professionals who are not expected to get dye on clients clothes or faces.
How to protect clothing and the use of towels and capes is something students learn about while training.
Salons have insurance for this kind of thing.
It would be reasonable for you to politely ask for reimbursement.

Going against the grain here… I don’t ever wear old clothes to the hairdresser. Sometimes my appointment is directly before going out and I am quite dressed up. I have never ever had an issue, that’s what all the capes, towels etc are for, surely? If I’m doing a desperate colour touch up at home, that’s a different story - old clothes, old towels etc but that’s why I pay a fiver for a box dye and 30 times as much to my hairdresser - it’s a different experience.

In short, I’d be raging.

The only thing my hairdresser asks customers not to wear is hoodies- she says they really get in the way and are difficult for her to keep clean during colouring.

Agree with this. I know loads of people get ready to go out straight from having their hair done!

However it’s happened to me, along with dye around the hairline- so I always an old top now. How they manage to get it on clothes whilst wearing a collar and gown baffles me. Not like it happens every time or being asked to wear old clothes would be standard.

I've had highlights put in my hair for 30 + years. I've never needed to wear an old top.
They insist on a cape and a towel around my neck presumably to avoid spillages on clothes.

Blimey, the vipers are out today! I have had my hair dyed for over 20 years and never had staining on any clothing as it's the hairdressers responsibility to make sure the neckline is watertight before any proceedure. My neighbour is a hairdresser and she said thats Customer Care 101 in salons, one of the first things juniors are taught.
At least the salon should have offered to clean the top, or advise how to do it at home.

ThePolarBearWhoLostHisCrown · 27/01/2025 23:28

I always used to get my colour done after work so was in work clothes. It never occurred to me that they might get dye on my clothes. I'd wash it and see if the colour comes out and if not send them a photo and your receipt. Ask them to pay towards a replacement. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I used to work in a salon and the policy was to apologise profusely and make good the mistake if clothes were damaged (thankfully rarely). They would NOT be blaming the client for not wearing their worst clothes in case the stylist was a bit careless with the bleach/dye/product/water etc.

So @Perpetuallyannoyed I disagree with the posters saying it's your fault for not wearing something you wouldn't mind being ruined. Personally, although none of my clothes are new or high value, I don't own anything I wouldn't be upset about if it got ruined at a salon, apart from overalls (and I can hardly wear those!).

ThatMiddleClassFood · 31/01/2025 13:01

Your hairdresser should have insurance who cover things like this. If she or the salon doesn't have insurance you need to find a new hairdresser.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 31/01/2025 13:14

I once had a cut & blow dry at a salon - no bleaching or colouring, as I never have any - & when I got home I found a large patch of white on the back of my mid-blue top. I assume there'd been bleach from someone else's job left on one of the chairs I used. I never went back to that salon as that level of uncleanliness with chemicals seemed dangerous.

Talkingfrog · 31/01/2025 13:37

My hairdresser always puts things over my top to prevent any damage to the top. I still wouldn't wear one I was too concerned about. Not saying I wear an old one, but just not one that is completely new. I accept that it is something that could accidently happen, so allow for that in my choice of clothing.

@Perpetuallyannoyed HAIRSPRAY

spray liberally all over the stain and the. Wash, it’ll come out

NiftyKoala · 31/01/2025 14:22

I never wear anything to the hair dresser that's important. I know it's disappointing your shirt was ruined but you are BU to think she should replace it

Pherian · 31/01/2025 23:17

Do you need common sense things recommended to you in every aspect of your life ?

ZoeDavoMCR · 01/02/2025 10:29

it is common knowledge you wear older clothes to the hairdressers, ideally dark colour. I appreciate you obviously didn’t know this but it is something most people know

Lyney · 09/02/2025 00:45

I disagree with people who say you should wear an old top. If this were the case then hairdressers should communicate this to their clients. I have never been instructed to wear an old top by any hairdresser. If this were the case, why would they use gowns and put towels around your neck and shoulders. I would find a new hairdresser. Cancel any more appointments you’ve booked and tell them why. The hairdresser should have offered some redress

OchoNaFanyaNini · 09/02/2025 00:57

I always wear an old top when I get my hair dyed!
