Hairdresser ruined my top

Perpetuallyannoyed · 27/01/2025 19:51

So, I had an appointment at the hairdresser at the weekend. Colour, cut, blow dry. All fine until I got home and realised that the back of my top near the neck was all stained (I’m assuming from the dye). I would usually be annoyed, but I was even more annoyed as I had only bought the top the previous day. I messaged my hairdresser about it, with a photo and asking whether they recommend that customers wear an old top to appointments as this had happened to mine. I thought she may offer to replace it. She didn’t, she just sorry that happened. The more I think about it, the more p*ed off I am! It wasn’t an expensive top or anything, so I wasn’t out in anything fancy but it is ruined and I can’t use it now. AIBU for thinking they should offer to replace it or knock some money off my next appointment as a goodwill gesture?? Or should I have worn an old top that I didn’t mind getting ruined??

Well that was stupid of you wasn’t it?!

A good hairdresser covers the neck of your top with a towel or something similar, the hairdresser was sloppy and unprofessional, I wouldn’t go back

Hazeby · 27/01/2025 20:08

I get my hair bleached and they put on a gown AND a plastic bib thing so it doesn’t matter what top I’m wearing. Did she not do this?

Agree, this is what any good hairdresser would do

ThisSunnyMember · 27/01/2025 20:57

OP I don’t think you aren’t being unreasonable! The same thing happened to me, I had on a new jumper when I last went to the hairdressers and ended up with the neck ruined and stained with bleach despite having on a cape overall and a towel! I realised when I got home and called them back up. The hairdressers apologised profusely and offered me either the money to replace the jumper or the money off my next appointment. You shouldn’t have to wear something old to a hair appointment IMO!

ThisSunnyMember · 27/01/2025 20:58

Ha I meant gown not a cape overall! I couldn’t think of the word 🤣

Hotzenplotz · 27/01/2025 20:58

Oh dear. Why wear a new top when getting your hair dyed? It's basic common sense not to!

comedycentral · 27/01/2025 21:01

I understand your frustration, but there's always a risk of clothing getting stained during hair appointments, even with precautions. It's unfortunate that your new top got ruined, but I don't think the hairdresser should replace it or offer a discount. In the future, it might be a good idea to wear an old top that you don't mind getting stained.

MissUltraViolet · 27/01/2025 21:02

I think the fault is somewhat shared. The hairdresser should have been more careful and covered your clothing properly to prevent it happening and you should have used some common sense and not worn new clothes to go get your hair dyed.

Seeing as the top wasn't expensive or anything special I would just buy myself another one, learn from my mistake and use another salon in future.

BakewellGin1 · 27/01/2025 21:02

Always an older top for hairdressers. If I'm going out afterwards I take a change of top in my bag.
Just sensible really

Haver74 · 27/01/2025 21:04

The girl washing the bleach off my hair once managed to splash it all down the back of my neck so it bleached my top.
My hairdresser compensated me, as I would expect them to! I pay a lot of money and don't expect my clothes to be ruined.
For those saying wear an old top, I don't have any! I only own 'nice' things. I wear cashmere to walk the dog 😂 If I'm doing some DIY I wear overalls, but I would hardly turn up at the hairdressers in them!

Vaxtable · 27/01/2025 21:05

Please you know they are using dye, you know it could damage someth8ng you should have worn an old top

don’t try it on with ‘do you ask people to wear an old top’

DoubleRainbow3 · 27/01/2025 21:05

I wear the same jumper everytime I'm in hairdressers having hair dyed.
You cant really blame them.
Hair moves, you move about etc. Surely you know this.

AffableApple · 27/01/2025 21:07

YABU. Obviously.

Newmumburnout · 27/01/2025 21:12

You should have worn an old top

PeppyGreenFinch · 27/01/2025 21:17

I don’t dye my hair, I just get a trim off my long hair and I still wear an old top for it.

LadyContrary · 27/01/2025 21:18

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 27/01/2025 20:44

I completely agree with this. I am often going out somewhere afterwards and so am dressed nicely. Have never had a problem in 40 years - and these days my roots need doing every 4 weeks!

We’re definitely in the minority here!!

Libertysparkle · 27/01/2025 21:19

Did they put a towel on you (round neck) over the normal cutting cover plus a plastic neck cover. My hairdresser does. Plus now I have glasses I also get plastic sleeves to go over the arms.
I don't think if they did all the above I'd expect my top to get stained.

McLarenette · 27/01/2025 21:20

I echo the advice about using hairspray on the stain. I had the same thing happen at the hairdresser and it got out every trace of the hair dye on a cashmere sweater.

MrsMalaga · 27/01/2025 21:22

Do you know how little hairdressers get paid and how much griping they have to put up with from clients?

I would just clock this up to experience. You have said that she’s a nice person so give her a break. Use the top for some floor rags or wear it next time you’re getting your colour done.

Jeezitneverends · 27/01/2025 21:22

Perpetuallyannoyed · 27/01/2025 20:10

I did want an answer to it…I’m quite direct 😂 I wouldn’t have asked that question otherwise. I wondered whether they had a disclaimer or something somewhere that I had missed…which would then make it my own stupid fault and absolutely naff all I could do about it 🤷🏻‍♀️

It was your own stupid fault to wear something brand new to an appointment involving DYE!

Whatsitreallylike · 27/01/2025 21:22

Bit of both honestly. It’s only ever happened to me once after 20 years of regular visits to different hairdressers. When it happened she apologised profusely and offered to replace it. I declined because, as standard, I always wear a tatty top to the hairdressers just in case.

She was wrong not to offer to replace it or offer some sort of goodwill, you were silly to wear a brand new top to the hairdressers.

SabreIsMyFave · 27/01/2025 21:25

Of course YABU. I never wore a decent top when I used to have my hair dyed, or lightened at the hairdressers.

You need to suck this up @Perpetuallyannoyed

TappyGilmore · 27/01/2025 21:25

I would have thought it common knowledge that you wear old clothes that you don’t care about to the hairdresser. The stain from the dye is probably unusual but of course it can happen. More commonly, your clothes will be covered in little off-cuts of hair and will need washing immediately, so you need to wear something that you can chuck in the washing machine as soon as you get home.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 27/01/2025 21:26

Ladyluckinred · 27/01/2025 20:06

Picture OP? Some wise Mumsnetter may have some tips to remove the dye.

I’ve never had dye on my clothes visiting the hairdressers, but I’m aware there’s a chance it could happen.

Nah - I think they're all too busy laying into OP to provide any practical suggestions!

Tvp123 · 27/01/2025 21:27

Happened to one of my tops once. Hairdresser noticed, apologised and I think sprayed hairspray on it. She definitely put something on that she said would help. Anyway, it came out within about 3 or 4 washes and this was perm colour. Maybe try a few washes and see what happens.

HappyHappyy · 27/01/2025 21:29

You shouldn't have to wear an 'old top' to the hair salon, you should wear what you want when you're paying good money for your hair.

They're the professionals, so splashing hair bleach around like toddlers with paint is somewhat embarrassing. It happens, fair enough, but accountability is on their part.

You wouldn't stand for you a shop assistant smashing your eggs on their way through the scanner, then expecting you to pay for them at the other side.

Salon in the wrong here - unless it's an apprentice, then I could have a bit more understanding, of course.
