Hairdresser ruined my top

Perpetuallyannoyed · 27/01/2025 19:51

So, I had an appointment at the hairdresser at the weekend. Colour, cut, blow dry. All fine until I got home and realised that the back of my top near the neck was all stained (I’m assuming from the dye). I would usually be annoyed, but I was even more annoyed as I had only bought the top the previous day. I messaged my hairdresser about it, with a photo and asking whether they recommend that customers wear an old top to appointments as this had happened to mine. I thought she may offer to replace it. She didn’t, she just sorry that happened. The more I think about it, the more p*ed off I am! It wasn’t an expensive top or anything, so I wasn’t out in anything fancy but it is ruined and I can’t use it now. AIBU for thinking they should offer to replace it or knock some money off my next appointment as a goodwill gesture?? Or should I have worn an old top that I didn’t mind getting ruined??

YANBU, I've had my hair coloured for years and not once had any tops stained or damaged by dyes because they're always covered by a gown + towel + plastic thing to protect your clothes.

GivingUpFinally · 27/01/2025 21:30

I work in the industry. It is absolutely not your fault. It is on them to ensure that you are gowned up properly. That isn't on you.
It's them.

Salons I know that have ruined or even slightly damaged clothes, handbags or personal items always either replace them or reimburse the client provided they can provide proof of purchase. I would be 100% asking for reimbursement.

You aren't to know whether you're gowned up properly or not. It's sloppy of them to not check if everything is secure.

GivingUpFinally · 27/01/2025 21:32

Salons have insurance for this reason among many others

nodramaplz · 27/01/2025 21:32

Really they have no right to ruin your clothes. I don't wear old clothes, I expect them to be professional enough to tuck towels & use gowns.

Never has a hair dresser ruined my top x

pizzicato · 27/01/2025 21:37

As others have advised, spray liberally with any hair spray then put in the washing machine.

Perpetuallyannoyed · 27/01/2025 20:28

Thanks all. It is clear that is my own stupid fault! Lesson learnt. I had a common sense failure obviously.

No, I don't believe this to be your fault.
It's not unreasonable to go to a hair dressers for a committee and expect them to protect your clothes.
What about the business women that go in expensive suits.

Ponderingwindow · 27/01/2025 21:40

One time she pulled the cape off me after a balayage and my shirt was covered in bleach spots. It was an older shirt, but it was just completely destroyed. She might as well have poured the bleach directly on it.

the cape I was wearing got pulled out of the laundry and moved to the trash. They wanted to comp my bill, but it was a very expensive service and my hair looked great so they finally agreed to take 50%.

MidnightFireflies · 27/01/2025 21:41

This happened to me at my last appointment. I was wearing a yellow linen shirt (summer here) which was very new, and when I got home there was dye all around the neckline. I’ve been getting my hair coloured for 30 years and this has never happened.

the hairdresser puts a cloak and a towel around my neck but something must have gone a bit wrong for there to be (a) dye on my neck and (b) dye on my shirt. I was really annoyed and kicking myself for having worn the top - it didn’t occur to me it could be an issue because it’s never been an issue in 30 years!

I think some PP have been a bit harsh telling OP it was her fault though. The hairdresser should take suffficient care not to get dye on clothing.

I sprayed the top with fabric stain remover and washed it and the dye came out so I didn’t mention it to my hairdresser. OP, have you tried washing it yet? Hope it comes out.

nodramaplz · 27/01/2025 21:41

gamerchick · 27/01/2025 20:46

Come on OP, it's common sense to wear old clothes for dying the hair.

This is completely on you. Just learn the lessons.

Yeah, if you've paid £5 for a box dye your doing yourself!!

Some people in this forum just love to ruffle feathers!
I'd hate to be you!

Fullfatandfortyplus · 27/01/2025 21:41

I get my hair coloured all the time with dark hair dye and have never considered what I’m wearing, have never got any staining on my clothes ever in 20 years of colouring. I’d be really annoyed if this happened.

ClaireEclair · 27/01/2025 21:46

I once wore a white top to get my hair dyed and as soon as the towel went on a knew I had made a mistake. My own fault though not the hairdresser.

Hotzenplotz · 27/01/2025 21:52

Haver74 · 27/01/2025 21:04

The girl washing the bleach off my hair once managed to splash it all down the back of my neck so it bleached my top.
My hairdresser compensated me, as I would expect them to! I pay a lot of money and don't expect my clothes to be ruined.
For those saying wear an old top, I don't have any! I only own 'nice' things. I wear cashmere to walk the dog 😂 If I'm doing some DIY I wear overalls, but I would hardly turn up at the hairdressers in them!

No old tops?! Well, aren't you lucky! 😂

Sidebeforeself · 27/01/2025 21:54

I dont understand your logic that a disclaimer would have made it your responsibility. It’s still your responsibility regardless of whether theres a disclaimer or not

Stravaig · 27/01/2025 21:57

Look on the bright side, OP. You now have a new top that you presumably love which you can now legitimately reserve as your old getting-my-hair-dyed top, thus guaranteeing you will look both fabulous and practical for every future dye appointment 😆.

Matronic6 · 27/01/2025 21:57

I don't even colour my hair and I know you wear an old top.

Doggymummar · 27/01/2025 21:58

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 27/01/2025 20:44

I completely agree with this. I am often going out somewhere afterwards and so am dressed nicely. Have never had a problem in 40 years - and these days my roots need doing every 4 weeks!

I'm glad you said this. Going to the hairdresser's I am usually dressed up, makeup on going straight out. I've never had clothing ruined. One time she did suggest I take off my rollneck as it was difficult to work around. I would be er think to wear an old top

StripyHorse · 27/01/2025 21:59

I have had my hair dyed at the hair dresser a number of times and only once got any hair dye on my clothes - she actually dropped a bit on my sleeve.

Before going to the hairdressers I nearly put on one of my favourite jumpers, but the thought that I didn't want to risk anything happening to it stopped me. I can cope with my 'knocking around the house hoodie' having a small mark on it.

XDee56 · 27/01/2025 22:03

I get my hair coloured a lot and this has only ever happened to me once. I did complain and they took the cost of the jumper off the next bill. I don’t really think you should be going into hairdressers expecting your clothes to be ruined 🤷🏼‍♀️

coldcallerbaiter · 27/01/2025 22:06

I can’t believe you messaged the hairdresser. What did you ectothermic than an apology? A new top?

Lemon1111 · 27/01/2025 22:06

SlaveToAGoldenRetriever · 27/01/2025 19:52

YABU to be stupid enough to wear a brand new top to the hairdressers! Anytime I’m getting my hair dyed I make sure I wear a top that I’m not too precious about as it’s very common to get some dye on the back of the neck. Use some common sense OP

Edited

you sound like a lovely person

coldcallerbaiter · 27/01/2025 22:09

Hotzenplotz · 27/01/2025 21:52

No old tops?! Well, aren't you lucky! 😂

If no old top, one from a charity shop is fine for £10 and it can be your ‘hairdresser tip’.

DragonFly98 · 27/01/2025 22:17

A hairdresser got dye on my dress and refunded the full retail price. It was an expensive salon though.

Rowena191 · 27/01/2025 22:20

A similar thing happened to me at the hairdresser. I was getting my roots done with brown dye and scratched an itch, and got dye on my fingertips. Then I touched my new red handbag without realizing and got brown marks on it. I couldn't get it out with hairspray or anything and actually made it worse by rubbing. I went to the Timpson's down the road and they had some paint suitable for leather that luckily matched exactly and I was able to cover the mark. Now I wear a dark top and take an old handbag just in case of another accident.

Banyon · 27/01/2025 22:20

I always wore old black t-shirt to my salon
hairdresser made some comment & I replied, in previous city, customers changed into a dressing gown & had lockers for clothes, handbag etc … to keep clothes clean, so here I just wear the black tshirt
hairdresser said - oh, you can wear nice clothes, we don’t get product on clothes

The very next appointment, I wore brand new blouse & she got dye down the back & actually said .., your kids must have got chocolate on the seat of your car!
I replied - my kids are 16, & 18 and are not smearing chocolate in my car. In fact, eating not allowed in my car! She scurried away no apologies. The stain did not come out & I switched hairdressers.
The chocolate thing, very crappy thing to say.

My advice do not get dressed up for salon.

thorneyislanddoris · 27/01/2025 22:22

Why is everyone blaming the OP? I've had my hair dyed many times at the hairdressers and I've never even had a spot of dye on my clothes!

Your hairdresser should've been more careful!

So yes she should knock some money off the next appointment as a gesture of goodwill.
