Did I do anything wrong here? Driving

1000 replies

Azzywhatty · 27/01/2025 13:48

I drove home from rural Northumberland today. On a single track road my sat nav fell out of its holder onto the passenger side floor. There was a lorry behind me. I continued along the single track road until it widened into two lanes, then indicated left, slowed down and stopped so I could pick it back up.

The lorry behind me beeped as I stopped. Did I do anything wrong here? I indicated and slowed and waited until the road went back to two lanes and it was safe to stop. I can’t work out why he was beeping.

There was no other traffic in either direction.

YANBU - you did nothing wrong
YABU - you did something wrong (what and why??)

So now I should pull into another country lane and find somewhere to safely do a three point turn so that the lorry doesn’t have to slightly move over? What if that lane was also one the lorry wanted to be on? Do I drive until the lorry turns off?

Haha.. lorries can't 'slightly move over' you know, they would have to swing all the way over into the oncoming lane, and perhaps a bit further, to get around you without hitting you, depending how narrow the road was, that could have meant going over the edge of the far side of the road which is normally pot holed or insecure, they don't have the best visibility from up in the cab so would probably have had to give you more room than you needed just to be on the safe side.

You could have swung around in the junction, then waited to re-join the road behind the lorry and other cars to pass and then pulled up without a massive vehicle behind you, cars and vans would have no problem getting round you, lorry would be struggling.

I think the issue for me is you expected him to go round you, or wait while you sorted yourself out, it would have been better to wait till you could safely pull off the road somewhere to at least let them go past before stopping and sorting out your sat nav.

Like I say, technically nothing you did was wrong, but it wasn't very courteous.

It clearly wasn’t that difficult because he overtook me easily without stopping.

because some people are having trouble following the thread

I would put it to you that if some people are having trouble following the thread, then they really shouldn’t be commenting/voting. No doubt these people are the 57% who have voted yabu.

No, not all the 57% who voted yabu have misunderstood the thread. I know I haven’t.
Nice try though 😉

This is clearly pointless, OP, and I think you're just here for the wind up.

Why would you ask if you'd done anything wrong when clearly you don't believe you had?

Fwiw, I don't think it was ideal, it sounds like a hazardous place to stop, was it on a 60mph limit?

I’ve answered both questions numerous times.

How? Genuinely, how could I have caused an accident?

The lorry could have crashed into the back of me at 20mph because he was too close to allow himself to stop despite the signalling and gradual slowing. Which would’ve been his fault. Other than that, what accident could have been caused?

So you knew he was too close?
And you still thought it was ok to stop?

Yes, you keep driving until you can pull over safely.

Who do you think would come off worse in an accident, you or the lorry?

I’d elect to keep driving and be safe. You can get back en route when the lorry is chundering away in the other direction.

You can’t really tell how easy it was for him exactly?
You posted in the first place because he beeped you - and this may have been because he was annoyed, though we’re not sure of course. You did seem to think it a possibility when you started this thread though, and you’re the only witness we have 🤔

They do make it look easy.

But he did beep you, so who knows.. a lot of people have said they would have found a more appropriate place to stop when they've got a lorry behind them, myself being one of them. It wasn't an emergency, you could have continued driving until you found a more appropriate place, but you chose to pull up there instead and got beeped for it.. make of that what you will I suppose.

It doesn't sound like you've learnt anything from it, and if your first though was to stop and obstruct the traffic instead of even bothering to looking for a more appropriate place to pull over then I don't think this will be the last time you get beeped at.

Cosyblankets · 27/01/2025 22:07

No. This is hypothetically the only way there could have been an accident.

Frankly some men will just beep anyone. He might not have been paying attention and gave himself a fright.

That's exactly what I thought. I feel the OP's frustration at all the replies from posters who simply haven't read the OP properly. Infuriating.

I couldn't be arsed reading through all your many replies defending your decision, so I gave up and obviously missed those answers. I won't go trawling back for them now.

I think you should have stopped elsewhere. Don't know how long you have been driving, but I started before Sat Navs really took off... they're not essential. Certainly not essential enough to just stop in a road like that. YABU.

I was safe. It was safe. It was not a near miss. It was fine. He went straight past me.

Yeah I think she is and she’s definitely bored (and it shows) - it’s been going on all day 😅 regardless it’s just unsafe - if I was driving I wouldn’t expect to see a stationary car in the road - and I image the lorry beeped as he didn’t expect her to just stop.

I did not obstruct the traffic! No traffic stopped.

It wasn't a dual carriageway

It was a high speed road. You don't just stop especially with a lorry behind. Clueless!

Because it went round the obstruction…

They are all high speed roads because no one is going to individually give them limits. The two vehicles were doing no more than 20mph.

@Azzywhatty

ypu sound so silly, so you’d stop in the middle of a motorway if it was quiet to pick something up instead of coming off at the next exit finding somewhere SAFE to park and sorting your sat nav out. You don’t own the roads and you were taught I hope if you go wrong you Correct it in the safe way which you did not. Had the police come across you I’m sure they would not of been very accepting

So you were coming out of a single lane area to a two lane road. The lorry was probably anticipating you accelerating. You indicated when there was no turning, no stopping point or no layby. He probably assumed you'd knocked the indicator in error.

By stopping you became a hazard without hazard lights. This wasn't a residential street or near shops so no expectations to stop unless an emergency. It wasn't an emergency and you didn't have hazards on to tell anyone you. You indicated you were turning or pulling over with mo where to turn or pull over.Thwre was my reason to stop there.

I'm repeating myself the same way as you are. When this ends in the Daily Mail I hope you enjoy the attention.

So you’re suggesting that anyone on country roads are now unable to stop and turn around until they find a residential street or handy shops?

OP posts:
LuckyOrMaybe · 27/01/2025 22:40

Well I can imagine doing something pretty much the same as you describe on rural roads that size. If I was relying on a traditional map I might have to pick it up or even stop to consult it. If the truck driver had a problem with you I'm inclined to think they may have been travelling too fast / too close for the road conditions. Or just impatient that you'd been driving too slowly on the single track section for their preference? Nothing worse than being tailgated by locals when you're driving unfamiliar roads ...
