We have a friend with a birthday in a few weeks.

The number one song when he was born was ‘Cinderella Rockafella.’

As you’ve possibly guessed - if this was his birthday number one - he’s still a young lad and might be a bit shy and self conscious when it comes ti things like showy displays ! 🙌

His birthday’s at the beginning of March.

What my partner and I would love to do is an impromptu dance to this song when we all visit the local social club in a few weeks to celebrate his birthday.

I’m busy learning the exact lyrics for this song already!

i personally LOVE this song although some people apparently find it a bit twee

SO -

YANBU - it’s a lovely, gesture and great to take initiative at a time when most people are busy scrolling their phones and CBA to make an effort for anyone or anything!

YABU - ‘Cinderella Rockafella’ is a novelty record sung by seasoned performers and the ‘Average Joes’ of this world can’t carry off such a performance without it looking extremely naff!

Please do it OP! And film it and pop the clip on here for us all to enjoy.

😂😂😂

I have seen many choreographed first dances at weddings performed by non dancers and find them embarrassing to watch. So given you're not performers, and I don't know what was nr 1 when I was born, I'm afraid it's a no from me.

Although if you did it I'd pretend I liked it for your sake.

Hang on. Which is it? He's a bit shy and self conscious or he's not really shy and he's quite jovial?

Look, I am not remotely shy but I can be self conscious and I absolutely loathe anything too performative or jazz handsy. You've been told repeatedly by just about EVERYBODY that this is a godawful idea and he'll probably hate it but you are still trying to come up with reasons why it won't be that bad.

If the record had been something like Run To The Hills by Iron Maiden, or some really technically complicated power ballad and you couldn't just mince about hamming it up doing this cheesy duet which is pretty easy to sing, would you be so keen to do it? I doubt it. Which says it's not about the nice gesture and a relevant / meaningful song really. It's actually about an opportunity for you and your partner to have the attention on you. Well you might enjoy it, but I can almost guarantee that he won't.

ForZanyAquaViewer · 27/01/2025 13:24

I am clearly a lone voice, but I would LOVE THIS! And I’d be really touched that friends had made such an effort. I think it’s very sweet and very funny. You’ll look like complete idiots, but honestly - so what?

I had never heard of the song and it’s really quite terrible, which makes it even funnier to me. If you want to be my friend and do this for my birthday, my birth No 1 was apparently ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ by Rick Astley. 😁

I agree. It was one of those things that was funny and original the first few times it happened, when genuinely no-one expected it and the people performing had put in a HUGE amount of work to make it a real spectacular. And they were probably genuinely capable and enthusiastic about doing it.

Like everything, once it became an expected part of any wedding reception the quality of the performance dropped dramatically off a cliff edge because half these people were probably told they had to do it, so it came across as self conscious and half arsed. And absolutely nobody was surprised by it, apart from the odd ancient auntie who hadn't heard of Instagram or TikTok. In fact everyone else was probably bracing themselves for signs that it was about to happen throughout the entire wedding reception. When you reach this point you know it's cheesy and it's time to stop.

meh2025 · 27/01/2025 13:30

Please don't do this to him. If you crave attention, wait until your own birthday and force your friends to watch you performing then.

People will be nice to you about it on the night to be polite and the majority will gossip about your attention seeking embarrassing antics behind your back.

TheEnterainer · 27/01/2025 10:15

Ah I still think of him as youthful ❤️

He’s not really shy actually- he’s one of these jovial types

People keep telling you not to do it. You seem determined not to acknowledge this.

That poor man.

She’s very much acknowledged it and said she’s not doing it. Multiple times since yesterday.

ForZanyAquaViewer · 27/01/2025 13:52

Are people even reading the OP’s posts in their rush to put the boot in?

She wanted to do something she thought would be silly and fun, she’s been told not to, and she said ‘okay’ quite early on. It’s really not that serious, people. 😆

category12 · 27/01/2025 13:53

Get everyone going in on the surprise and all doing it if you think it's such a great idea.

Just the two of you will be weird. Unless your partner is Anton Du Beke and you're Oti Mabuse.

Guilty as charged 😂

To be fair, I’m now imagining the magnificence of Anton Du Beke and Oti Mabuse dancing to this terrible song and it’s very much sparking joy. So, thank you! 🤣

Ok, I apologise as I was skimming and must have missed that, the replies I read all seemed to be her minimising.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 27/01/2025 14:04

It doesn't help that I REALLY REALLY HATE this song.

I think there has been a mass triggering phenomenon gone on and we've ceased to listen or read, we are just having a collective meltdown now. 😂

Tbh, I just skimmed her two pages of replies and saw her continuing to say how much she loved the song, minimising and joking, and missed her saying twice that she would read the room. Hope she sticks to that.

I love Cinderella Rockafella!

But I tell you the song from this exact era I absolutely hate is Bonny and Clyde - that was number 1 for a week in January 1968 I think so I think he should thank his lucky stars he escaped that one!

You remind me of my mum 😁
She also seems oblivious to negative or sarcastic comments- or deliberately ignores them- and would also just carry on enthusiastically declaring 'I LOVE Cinderella Rocker fella!🎶 - but in her case it would be something by Queen or The Beatles 😅

Unbearably cringe. As in so very cringe that I'm wishing I hadn't even read about it. Absolutely awful - it's making me shudder!

GoldOP · 27/01/2025 18:13

Never heard of the song but I doubt many people know the no 1 when they were born, I certainly don’t! Sorry but it sounds really cringe

Toptops · 27/01/2025 18:18

Please don't

DeeDoyle · 27/01/2025 18:22

Dont do it OP. The song doeant matter, its a HUGELY cringe thing to do regardless of the song choice, that makes it a bit batshit to be honest x

JennyBG · 27/01/2025 18:27

Are you serious?? How totally disrespectful you’re being for wanting to do something that gratifies just you, but will embarrass the young glad on his birthday. Save your juvenile pranks for April fool’s day. Grow up.

gardenflowergirl · 27/01/2025 18:33

A baby is unaware of what music is around when they are born or in infancy so I think it would be irrelevant to a birthday celebration at any age.

outerspacepotato · 27/01/2025 18:36

Are you a wannabe theatre kid?

This sounds awful, as well as making yourself the center of attention on someone else's birthday.

No.
