M&S bra fitting never again

At the appointment the assistant asked me to take my top off and what size bra I was wearing, I explained I am considering one without wires. She brought the size I currently have and stood in front of me and said right with a nod that told me she wanted me to strip, I was so embarrassed having had breast cancer surgery in the past and turned my back to try on the bra she brought. It didn't fit so she brought a smaller size then undid the bra I had on and took it. The new bra was so tight I looked like I had another boob under each armpit, she said it was the right size for me. I am annoyed with myself for not speaking up and asking her to leave. This wasn't at my local store where I have seen the assistant step out of the cubicle for others and had expected the same. The last time I was measured in a local small independent store the assistant only ever came in to check how it fit after asking my permission.

Hmm, not good. That's what puts me off having a bra fitting.

I had a fitting at Bravissimo many moons ago and the fitter wanted to be in the cubicle with me the whole time. I asked for privacy, and she stepped out.

I knew someone who loved her bra fittng job in M&S, for obvious reasons; her words, not mine.

Totally different to the bra fitting I had recently with M&S.

Didn't even measure me, the assistant said they don't do that anymore and haven't since covid. Got a range of bras and I tried them on, her pulling over the curtain as I did and asked me to tell her when I was ready. Just by looking she would say try this larger/smaller size. A size that I don't wear since as it feels too big! Didn't see me without any bra On at any point.

I wonder why it differs from store to store?

KimberleyClark · 26/01/2025 15:05

Try John Lewis instead. The M& S fitter insisted I was a D cup even though that size obviously didn’t fit. Went to John Lewis and came away with an F cup bra.

BashfulClam · 26/01/2025 15:08

M&S measure you for their range only which differs for some reason from every other bra manufacturer.

This. Measured me as 36 c in my early 20s when I was a 28 F. Years of wearing wrong size bra until I went to Rigby and Peller. But for a proper bra fitting they do actually need to see your boobs with no bra on.

ChestnutGrove · 26/01/2025 15:13

That's a shame. They are good at my local one but sorry you had a bad experience

tothelefttotheleft · 26/01/2025 15:14

@Notellinganyone

I had an awful experience with Rigby and Peller. Sold me a bra that they altered and then sent to me that I couldn't even get on by myself. A very expensive waste of money.

sanityisamyth · 26/01/2025 15:18

M&S are famously awful for bra fittings. Go to Bravissimo.

🙄to you more like as I've no idea what the obvious reasons are either unless you are saying she's a lesbian with a boob fetish.

I have had a bad experience at John Lewis too. I had restricted breathing with the size she recommended for me. I have now got to my size by trial and error.
I am beginning to think that with measuring for a bra it is not the same formula for everyone. I have smallish boobs but a large chest frame.

Itiswhysofew · 26/01/2025 15:11

🙄

What are the obvious reasons? Did she want to empower women with well girded boobs?

Neveranynamesleft · 26/01/2025 15:28

Are you able to send them an email with your comments ? I certainly would. They should be told if customers are not happy and definitely in that sort of situation.

Tickyandtackyandjackiethebackie · 26/01/2025 15:29

I took my daughter to M&S for her first bra fitting. It was a disaster! The fitter made my daughter really uncomfortable and self conscious and got her size totally wrong - a 32A when she is definitely more like a 28A!

I'm also intrigued by these obvious reasons!

Lemon1111 · 26/01/2025 15:33

I didn’t have this experience, I when to get maternity bras and my lady was lovely, popped out and popped back in when I said I was ready. I remember you get sent a questionnaire afterwards and I gave her an excellent rating, maybe you can comment on yours and explain you are unhappy.

CurbsideProphet · 26/01/2025 15:35

M&S do something weird with their measurements so everyone ends up with completely the wrong back size. I used the Boob or Bust website now to measure myself as that works better.
I'm sorry they made you feel uncomfortable, that is very poor customer service.

What are the obvious reasons? Is “she” actually a straight man? Is she just a perve? Does she enjoy manhandling people?

Most people do that job because they’re good at customer service, they work in the shop and have, at some point, been offered the role and trained on it. Or they care about women being fitted correctly to avoid bad backs etc. It’s an important item of clothing for women and I’d understand wanting to take that job. But the way you say “obvious reasons” sounds sinister and I would never guess anything sinister about a woman doing that job so no, not obvious.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 26/01/2025 15:36

Never had a bra fitting in M&S but had one in Bravissimo once and hated it. I much prefer to do it myself. You can learn online what you need to do to make sure a bra fits you properly. There's no real need to have someone do it for you. In the end, it doesn't matter how much someone else tells you 'this is the right size for you' if you don't like the look of your silhouette and you don't feel comfortable then it's not right. Apart from anything else, the same size bra in 10 different styles can look and feel completely different each time.

My fitter kept insisting that the bra staps should sit right on the edge of my shoulders instead of a bit higher up, where I prefer them. But I felt like they were slipping off the edge of my shoulders the whole time. She also wanted to hoik my boobs up too high so I felt like they were right under my chin, which looked ridiculous.

Theunamedcat · 26/01/2025 15:38

They tried selling me a bra for my daughter she fit into it like a ping pong ball in a pint glass I gave them my best thank you very much we will look for something more youthful and went to Debenhams where a man tried to barge to the bra fitting area and the fitter flew at him yelling SIR SIR IM CALLING THE POLICE ON YOU IF YOU DONT LEAVE NOW! (He left) DD and I agreed it was an "eventful" experience but she was correctly fitted there

NotthinglikeaBondGirl · 26/01/2025 15:38

I'm a 32AA - all my bras come from the 'teenaged range' and have a leaflet about coping with my first period. No chance of a black bra from M&S in that range. BTW I'm 61 years old. 😂

Allergictoironing · 26/01/2025 15:38

Quite a few years ago I went to a number of stores to get a bra fitting, all in the same fortnight. This included M&S, John Lewis, some independent shops, Bravissimo, Debenhams, House of Frazer...

My back measurement ranged from 34-40, my cup size from D to H, and that wasn't always the bigger the cup the smaller the back size.

I started buying cheap bras & worked out my actual size then bought some pricier ones on that basis in the end.

Teaslethistlepink · 26/01/2025 15:39

Sorry to hear that.
I have had a good experience more than once with M&S as have other family members. Considerate and accurate.
Bravissimo on the other hand I had to go back the next day to return the bra with red marks from tightness everywhere the bra touched. I had an imprint of the whole bra when I took it off
