M&S bra fitting never again

At the appointment the assistant asked me to take my top off and what size bra I was wearing, I explained I am considering one without wires. She brought the size I currently have and stood in front of me and said right with a nod that told me she wanted me to strip, I was so embarrassed having had breast cancer surgery in the past and turned my back to try on the bra she brought. It didn't fit so she brought a smaller size then undid the bra I had on and took it. The new bra was so tight I looked like I had another boob under each armpit, she said it was the right size for me. I am annoyed with myself for not speaking up and asking her to leave. This wasn't at my local store where I have seen the assistant step out of the cubicle for others and had expected the same. The last time I was measured in a local small independent store the assistant only ever came in to check how it fit after asking my permission.

I went to Bravissimo in my early 20's as a slim but booby size 10 looking for a strapless or multiway bra to wear under a particular dress for NYE. The fitter looked me up and down with a sneer and said 'this shop is for big busted women hen, why don't YOU go to Primark'.

She was clearly crap at her job because Debenhams measured me the same day as a 30F and I don't know on which planet an F cup isn't considered a big bust.
Sadly I have not retained that shape and wouldn't be likely to be told I'm not big enough for the shop these days but I've never gone back on principle because she was so shitty to me.

blankittyblank · 26/01/2025 15:59

Doesn't mean that they want to look at all women's tits though? It's like assuming all gay men want to look at all mens bums. It's so weird that this is assumption we're all supposed to come to.

M&S are awful - I’ve had similar in there and felt so embarrassed and I was too mortified to even say anything. The fitter felt quite patronising. Also tried Debenhams who were slightly better but the bras just weren’t comfortable.

I then tried Ann Summers out of sheer desperation and they were so respectful, gave privacy, found me the right size and have super comfy bras (not all of them obviously - some were just ribbon and bits of satiny stuff with holes 😂). But their classic wired range is decent and I’ve had them and got a lot of wear out of them and they seem to last about 4-5 years before I need to replace them. Bonus is they reduce them well in the sale so you can replace quite cheaply. Bad point is that they’ve no nude colours. Definitely worth a try though.

edit for typos

I guess if Ann Summers sales assistants made a habit of hovering over their customers without giving them space and privacy they'd never sell anything!

M&S and John Lewis welcome men into their bra fitting areas.

Not while they are occupied you have a dedicated corner which is kept private no-one is allowed back there there is a double fitting room like a room inside a room the fitter steps out while you change Debenhams was the same but he was trying to force the door apparently not for the first time that day hence the lady "on duty" outside the door

You really don’t know?? What a sheltered life you have led!

I've no idea either, women on women ogling is not a common crime. So yeah sure, sheltered.

I recommend John Lewis

Hmm, not good. That's what puts me off having a bra fitting.

I had a fitting at Bravissimo many moons ago and the fitter wanted to be in the cubicle with me the whole time. I asked for privacy, and she stepped out.

I knew someone who loved her bra fittng job in M&S, for obvious reasons; her words, not mine.

Boobs - spelling it out for those that need it .

sanityisamyth · 26/01/2025 16:01

@DinosaurMunch use the Boob or Bust method to accurately measure yourself and then buy whichever size it suggests. There are also sister sizes so a 36D is the same cup size as a 34E etc.

I want to know the obvious reasons too, and I haven't led a sheltered life.

Boobs duh

seems the conclusion we're supposed to have come to is that she is gay, ergo loves all tits. Like some bloke from a carry on film.

callmebuffy · 26/01/2025 16:02

Do you have a local independent shop? The type of shop where they look at you and more or less know what size you're be?

Had a fitting here the other week... Very respectful and steps out without asking etc.

But it's not obvious a lesbian would want to look at tits? Unless she has a particular fetish for them. It's weird to assume all lesbians want to get off on tits. That's what's confusing.

But the poster was quoting a person who said they liked the job "for obvious reasons" which was their words

No the conclusion is that the fitter themselves admitted they liked boobs

I know! And I was saying i don't understand the obvious reasons.

biggreenapple24 · 26/01/2025 16:04

Have found M&S to be absolutely useless at bra fitting, not even understanding the basics of what makes a well fitting bra. Trying to put me in a 36 inch back when I needed a 30-32.

Think the best way is to do your own research on what means a bra fits well/not well, measure yourself at home to get an idea of size and then try on lots of styles a brands.

I've found even with good brands that the white and black version of the same bra, same size doesn't fit the same.

If you're not sure how to measure: back size measurement is the back size you need, don't add anything. Then measure across the fullest part of your breast. A 1 inch difference from back size = A cup, 2 inch = B cup and so on.

M&S are famously awful for bra fittings. Go to Bravissimo.

Only works if D+++

That's so weird, gross and perverted. Majority of people who work in jobs like health care and regularly see people undressed don't think or talk like this. It's not normal in a professional environment

Well what else is it likely to be in that context? They have a fetish for slightly-too-small curtains?🙄

Goatblu · 26/01/2025 16:08

M & S put me in a 38A. I was actually a 34F/32FF (as per Bravissimo and John Lewis).

Definitely ask for privacy if you feel uncomfortable.

Oh dear God. Please tell me that job wasn't given to a biological male in lipstick and heels.

Was waiting for someone to shoehorn trans into the thread

Suzuki76 · 26/01/2025 16:10

I don't think it's obvious either. I'm straight but it doesn't mean I want to have a job performing testicular exams.

AngelicaRice · 26/01/2025 16:10

M&S in my limited opinion of a fitting tend to increase the band size (the old method of adding 2 inches.)

I spent years in 34A cups, going up to a 32B when pregnant.
All M&S bras.

I measured myself following an online guide and found my under bust measurement is 29-30 inches (depending.)

In theory I should wear a 30D.

In practise a 30 back is very snug so I go up to a 32C or a 32D

Brands vary so much. I find J Lewis bras tend to have more generous bands and I'm very close to wearing a 30 band.

On the other hand, M&S Rosie bras are tiny and I need a 34 band.

I don't bother with a fitter. I usually buy all my clothes online and just order a range of sizes.

🙄to you more like as I've no idea what the obvious reasons are either unless you are saying she's a lesbian with a boob fetish.

Just what I was thinking. Pervy 😂

Guttedandblue · 26/01/2025 16:10

That’s so bizarre to suggest that lesbians want to ogle boobs. Do most straight women ogle men in Speedos because I certainly don’t?
