M&S bra fitting never again

At the appointment the assistant asked me to take my top off and what size bra I was wearing, I explained I am considering one without wires. She brought the size I currently have and stood in front of me and said right with a nod that told me she wanted me to strip, I was so embarrassed having had breast cancer surgery in the past and turned my back to try on the bra she brought. It didn't fit so she brought a smaller size then undid the bra I had on and took it. The new bra was so tight I looked like I had another boob under each armpit, she said it was the right size for me. I am annoyed with myself for not speaking up and asking her to leave. This wasn't at my local store where I have seen the assistant step out of the cubicle for others and had expected the same. The last time I was measured in a local small independent store the assistant only ever came in to check how it fit after asking my permission.

I knew someone who loved her bra fittng job in M&S, for obvious reasons; her words, not mine.

Oh dear God. Please tell me that job wasn't given to a biological male in lipstick and heels.

M&S do something weird with their measurements so everyone ends up with completely the wrong back size. I used the Boob or Bust website now to measure myself as that works better.
I'm sorry they made you feel uncomfortable, that is very poor customer service.

I second boob and bust. M&S plus 4 the back size so you end up with no support in the band and over spilling cups

Vavazoom · 26/01/2025 15:42

I had a fantastic fitting in Victoria’s Secret after years of being uncomfortable in the wrong size. I left feeling amazing. I was very surprised as I assumed I was a bit old for the shop.

I took my daughter to M&S for her first bra fitting. It was a disaster! The fitter made my daughter really uncomfortable and self conscious and got her size totally wrong - a 32A when she is definitely more like a 28A!

They add 4" onto the band for no fathomable reason. 28" around the ribs is 28"!

Duechristmas · 26/01/2025 15:44

She absolutely should've stepped out. I have three daughters and have been to a lot of bra fittings. My favorite was a 'salt of the earth' grandma type at Debenhams. She absolutely rocked at bra fittings and always stepped out while you got yourself into the bra.
I would give feedback for sure.

Andoutcomethewolves · 26/01/2025 15:45

Yeah M&S are rubbish. Like others here when I got measured in my early 20s they massively overestimated my back measurement and underestimated cup size. Apparently I was a 36 AA. I was actually a 28/30 C (sadly more like a 36 D now!).

OOOtil2025 · 26/01/2025 15:46

M&S are awful - I’ve had similar in there and felt so embarrassed and I was too mortified to even say anything. The fitter felt quite patronising. Also tried Debenhams who were slightly better but the bras just weren’t comfortable.

I then tried Ann Summers out of sheer desperation and they were so respectful, gave privacy, found me the right size and have super comfy bras (not all of them obviously - some were just ribbon and bits of satiny stuff with holes 😂). But their classic wired range is decent and I’ve had them and got a lot of wear out of them and they seem to last about 4-5 years before I need to replace them. Bonus is they reduce them well in the sale so you can replace quite cheaply. Bad point is that they’ve no nude colours. Definitely worth a try though.

edit for typos

I heard it's because it's from the days when there was no stretch in the band so if you had the exact size of your ribcage you wouldn't be able to move or breathe. Seems about 100 years out of date now though

What are the obvious reasons?

You really don’t know?? What a sheltered life you have led!

So if I am a 32 f in m and s what size should I get elsewhere? 36 f or 36 DD or some else?

Not that obvious to me either... Women wanting to look at other women under the guise of helping them is not really a common perversion... Or are you getting at something else?

Lovelysummerdays · 26/01/2025 15:52

Honestly I’m not a fan of bra fittings. I think the best way is guess your size and grab a couple of bras you like, Then work your way up/ down the sizes. I’m roughly a 34 E/F but sometimes depending on bra you can go up / down a band or cup size even within the same store.

I would say I know your band is supposed to do at least half the lifting but I hate the back boob effect so I like a really deep band and broad strap which seems to smooth rather than cut in. A bra can fit but be really unflattering. I spend as much time looking at the back as I do the front.

GreenCandleWax · 26/01/2025 15:53

I wouldn't go for a bra fitting in M&S under any circumstance. Not only did they give me a completely wrong size years ago, and I wore ill-fitting bras for ages as a result, but now they allow men into women's changing rooms having decided to do so without consulting their women customers first. Not a woman-friendly company despite their core customers being women.

They tried selling me a bra for my daughter she fit into it like a ping pong ball in a pint glass I gave them my best thank you very much we will look for something more youthful and went to Debenhams where a man tried to barge to the bra fitting area and the fitter flew at him yelling SIR SIR IM CALLING THE POLICE ON YOU IF YOU DONT LEAVE NOW! (He left) DD and I agreed it was an "eventful" experience but she was correctly fitted there

M&S and John Lewis welcome men into their bra fitting areas.

M & S told me I was a 42B. I was wearing a 36F at the time…

I want to know the obvious reasons too, and I haven't led a sheltered life.

But it's not obvious a lesbian would want to look at tits? Unless she has a particular fetish for them. It's weird to assume all lesbians want to get off on tits. That's what's confusing.

niadainud · 26/01/2025 15:56

Itiswhysofew · 26/01/2025 14:52

Hmm, not good. That's what puts me off having a bra fitting.

I had a fitting at Bravissimo many moons ago and the fitter wanted to be in the cubicle with me the whole time. I asked for privacy, and she stepped out.

I knew someone who loved her bra fittng job in M&S, for obvious reasons; her words, not mine.

That's disturbing.

Of course I haven't had a sheltered life. Far from it. I wanted to clarify what the poster was saying.

Err, lesbians tend to not dislike tits mate, it's obvious what the pp's quoted person was alluding to.

Exactly! My daughter is a lesbian and the last thing she'd want to do is to measure strange women's breasts. It's a fucking insult to imply someone would get a kick out of it just because they are gay.

ohyesido · 26/01/2025 15:58

That's not right at all. They are trained to turn away or leave the cubicle, and never ask a customer to strip off thru should tell you to keep your bra on
