M&S bra fitting never again

At the appointment the assistant asked me to take my top off and what size bra I was wearing, I explained I am considering one without wires. She brought the size I currently have and stood in front of me and said right with a nod that told me she wanted me to strip, I was so embarrassed having had breast cancer surgery in the past and turned my back to try on the bra she brought. It didn't fit so she brought a smaller size then undid the bra I had on and took it. The new bra was so tight I looked like I had another boob under each armpit, she said it was the right size for me. I am annoyed with myself for not speaking up and asking her to leave. This wasn't at my local store where I have seen the assistant step out of the cubicle for others and had expected the same. The last time I was measured in a local small independent store the assistant only ever came in to check how it fit after asking my permission.

@Chrystalll YANBU but I am not surprised I went to M&S for a bra fitting and not only did they get my bra size wrong (3 sizes smaller than I actually am) their bra's are so uncomfortable and being on the bigger size I need a wire bra can't wear a wireless as I fall out of them but the M&S bra's cut into me like cheese wire, left red raw marks on me and they're bloody expensive!!!

I went to Debenhams and not only was the bra fitter the ultimate professional she found me comfortable bra's that were an instant relief because I had suffered with back, neck and shoulder blade aches from wearing the wtong bra size she also showed me how to make my bra fit me properly she found me two types of bra's that would suit my size the best and were very comfortable.

Also Debenhams cater for my size with plenty of choices even though their bra's are a bit pricey they're well worth the money.

Edited

I’m a 34H and despite the fact they can’t measure their lace flexi fit non wired bras are so comfortable.

Ohmych · 26/01/2025 17:19

I had an awful experience bra fitting in Herbert Lewis. She took me to a little room where I undressed my top half including bra. All of a sudden the door burst open and a workman walked in! They were having work done in the area. He just said oh sorry and walked back out. I was mortified. Never again.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 26/01/2025 17:19

Off topic, but I sometimes think I'm the only straight woman on the planet to not fancy David Gandy. Someone once mentioned that he looks a bit like Dean Gaffney, and I've never been able to unsee it.

😂

I agree, I was never sure who those DG undies ads were aimed at, surely no man ever thought that it would transform them from Barry Beerbelly into some James Bond-esque Adonis.

TeenLifeMum · 26/01/2025 17:19

M&S were fab when I took my teens in the summer.

I'm a 40F but every non wired bra I've tried I fall out of however the Debenhams wired bra's are very comfortable the M&S bra's are like a tortue device! 🤣

pestowithwalnuts · 26/01/2025 17:31

I took my 12 year old gd for her first bra fitting at M&S and she was given every courtesy and privacy
What happened to you was wrong op. I hope you have a better experience next time

Panama2 · 26/01/2025 17:36

The thing is different make bras fit well differently I have a draw of different size bras depending on the make.

I knew someone who loved her bra fittng job in M&S, for obvious reasons; her words, not mine.

Oh dear God. Please tell me that job wasn't given to a biological male in lipstick and heels.

That’s what I was wondering too …

GlasgowGal82 · 26/01/2025 17:39

M&S measure for their size range so you'll never get a good fit in my opinion. Their cup sizes don't go big enough to accommodate many women and so they underestimate your cup size and up your back size to squeeze you into what they stock. I used to buy my bras in M&S and switched to Bravissimo about ten years ago and went from a C/D cup to a G cup and I'd never go back because a well fitted bra is so much more comfortable and supportive. They also always ask if you want them to step out of the changing room or stay with you whilst you change too.

BlueRaven89 · 26/01/2025 17:41

M&S bra fitting is terrible. I had one post baby and she commented on the lack of perkiness from breastfeeding! The size was wrong too and rubbed my skin.

I complained to their head office.

Choccyscofffy · 26/01/2025 15:26

What are the obvious reasons? Did she want to empower women with well girded boobs?

I had a troubling experience working in a large department store. Went to get a different bra for woman to try in. Got back to find her practically naked, just some small pants, thrusting her large boobs at me. I was a teenager and didn't know what to do, mumbled something about the wrong bra in the box and rushed to my boss. She was a late 50s Joyce Grenfell type character. She went in and fitted her. I don't think the woman did much thrusting with her.

Omg that sounds awful. Glad you left quickly!

RedRiverShore5 · 26/01/2025 17:47

It seems to be the people with small under bust measurements that are being fitted wrongly, I have never experienced them adding 4 inches to the band, I measure 35 and get a 36, if they added several inches to the band surely they would be offering me a 40 and that as never happened

Huckinfell · 26/01/2025 17:47

M&S bra fitting is awful, they still use the +4 inches method and all that nonsense. Try the Boob or bust calculator, you won't look back

I have never experienced this, boob and bust for me is 36c and that is what M&S fit

No?! I’ve never known a single woman, straight or gay, who wants to see women’s boobs for personal pleasure while at work in an entirely non sexual setting?!

I’m not even sure I’d be confident on the reason if you said a porn star loves their job for obvious reasons.

I’m a straight woman and I don’t think I’d love a job fitting jock straps “for obvious reasons” so I’m actually not sure what any “obvious” reason is…

Also it would be very odd that a woman who did enjoy ogling the customers in a very vulnerable situation would admit that proudly to another woman.

It sounds exactly like something teenage boys might say to each other.

I hope you said something to your ‘friend’ about how inappropriate it was to talk about her customers like that. And how worrying it was to suggest that women can’t be safe from a sexual gaze in a professional setting where they are already vulnerable in a state of undress.

I had a fitting at Rigby and Pellar (you know, bra fitters for the Queen) to go under my strapless wedding dress and she stayed in the room with me to make sure I put it on properly and adjusted it. Frankly I think that's part of the job, and like when you get a mammogram they have no interest in your chest other than getting you the right bra. But of course you can ask them to leave. Sounds like she wasn't very well trained anyway!

This.

I always go to Rigby & Peller (the original branch opposite Harrods) and they always do an amazing job. But they will expect to see you topless as they look at the shape of your breasts, not just the size of them. They will also stay with you while you try the bras on to make sure you put them on correctly and adjust them properly. I’ve learnt a huge amount from their fitters over the years (I’ve been going there for over 20 years). They’re just breasts. They’ve seen hundreds of thousands of them. No-one is ogling you. It usually feels like I have a glamorous mother figure with me.

TheignT · 26/01/2025 17:54

Having worked in this area I've said on here before that the best way to get a good fit is to try on lots of bras. I got very shouted down about it. A 38D in one style might fit you but be totally wrong in another style and even more so with different brands. We always started by asking what size they were wearing and what make then measure then discussed style. People often questioned being offered different sizes but we knew a say 36B in this style/make would mean you'd need a 34C in that one.

Commenting on your perkiness is diabolical. In my experience fitters in M&S were shop assistants who'd had a short course, nothing like a properly trained corsetiere.

Corsetiere snobbery 😂

I'm a 32AA - all my bras come from the 'teenaged range' and have a leaflet about coping with my first period. No chance of a black bra from M&S in that range. BTW I'm 61 years old. 😂

Me too! I've had a stockpile of M&S t-shirt bras for years and only needed some new ones recently. None in store so ordered two on-line and when they came were called teenage bras! They are slightly too tight underneath and the boob coverage slightly too small. Not sure where to go to get any 32AA in the future.

I have had a bad experience at John Lewis too. I had restricted breathing with the size she recommended for me. I have now got to my size by trial and error.
I am beginning to think that with measuring for a bra it is not the same formula for everyone. I have smallish boobs but a large chest frame.

Me too. I find the solution is a numerical size smaller than you think you need, plus a bra extender so it fits my frame.

You are right. Make and style will often mean sizes vary.

YiayiaP · 26/01/2025 17:59

Bravissimo do an online fitting service which worked for me. People will mention boob or bust - but it wasn’t right for me! I think it’s a case of trial and error and finding what works for you and your boobs. So frustrating though! X

Curryingfavour · 26/01/2025 18:00

I’m not keen on Marks and Spencer, because one of their fitters told me that you buy the bra and fasten it on the tightest hook to start off with 🙄 then it stretches ???
it’s the opposite…you buy the bra that fits you on its loosest hook then as it stretches over time you fasten it a bit tighter.
she Also said I was at least a 34 ???
when I am actually a 30 F or 32 E or F cup depending on the style and brand

TheLizardQueen · 26/01/2025 18:01

My 18 year old daughter got measured in Ann Summers of all places, she kept her bra on all the way through and bought a few bras that fit her perfectly.
