Holidays - grumpy husband.

So
After years of a grumpy husband on holidays I've had enough - it's too hot, I have a rash, I don't want to be in the pool all the time etc etc. We stayed in Uk, cost almost as much and just got a different suite of complaints always aimed at me - where as have booked is too remote, he hates the beach, just wants to do what he wants for one day which is walking to a pub and basically I always come back crying.

This year am I being unreasonable if I am take my 13 year old daughter abroad alone? Sick of keeping everyone happy (also 17yr old boy but that's another story).

Looking for help - thinking Turkey, Greece or Cyprus, desperate for hotels recommendations short transfer, bits to do outside of hotel and quiet pools as Daughter doesn't cope with busy? Budget £2-3kXx

How do you book all this and where do you stay? I'm feeling overwhelmed just reading all those stops, though I'd love to try and do it. I would need two bedrooms as well as I can't do a triple, I'm too old to share with the kids! But it sounds fantastic. Did you just turn up, or book beforehand?

We did it using Milan as a base then just did day trips mainly because I cannot travel light and I would have got very stressed lugging cases off and on trains! The trains you just book on Trainline, it’s incredibly easy. If you wanted to move around, I would book the hotels then book the trains.

@mrsconradfisher thanks! Sounds easy enough!

I'd definitely go away with your dd.

And why not ask your h to book your holiday next year himself? Then he might appreciate the hours that go into finding a nice holiday in the right place to suit everyone!

Don't take a 13yo girl to turkey. Sorry to say, but she will get perved on and leered at when you're out and about.

Deffo go Greece, minus the grump.

Turkey is not like that whatsoever. It’s completely different to what it was 15 years ago and has some of the best service I’ve ever encountered

@Cherrysoup pretty much, he doesn't want to go abroad - prefers to stay in UK. I think as he's got older he is just so much less tolerant of anything he doesn't want to do where as when the kids were little he got On with it. He has always made it hard work to book , but I powered on through for the #memories but maybe I don't have the energy anymore to keep him happy at the expense of me. I honestly can't think of what he would like holiday wise. We spent a small fortune on camping equipment - all selected by both of us but now he can't stand all the 'stuff' we take. So we don't go. It's insinuated the stuff is a me thing ( my fault)but it's literally airbeds, cooking stuff etc just normal things. Bought a paddleboard - never gets used. He wants remote walking holidays but gets bored after the walk and kids aren't particularly excited by this but do trudge on, honestly it's relentless.

😢 That's so sad. Just do your own thing, there's no law says you have to go on the same holiday.

I've spent the last 10 years holidaying with the DDs but without DH. Started when they were 11 and 14. Up til then we'd only done UK breaks and when I wanted to then go abroad he didn't. But told me that shouldn't stop me doing it if I wanted to. So we did. We started 'easy' with the Eurostar to Disneyland Paris. Then the next year flew abroad and have done so every year since.

DD1 has now joined DH in not wanting to go away - doesn't think it's worth the cost and fuss, and doesn't cope well in the heat. But DD2 (now 20) is still v keen to go away with me and keep exploring places we haven't been to.

We've done Athens, Menorca, Salou, Majorca, Lanzarote, Tenerife, Malta and should have gone to Sorrento until Covid cancelled it.

To the OP, if you are keen on Italy by train please look at Seat61.com. The man in seat 61 (his favourite spot on Eurostar) is a great resource. You can search from UK to Italy or inside one country anywhere in the world. Gives step by step info, prices, photos, tips great for planning and daydreaming. Good luck.

Why do you come home from the pub crying?

Sorry wasn't clear, I come home from the holiday crying. Because he's made it clear he's not enjoyed it and is cross with me for the way I've planned it.

If your looking for a package beach holiday turkey has long transfers in most resorts.

have you thought about Croatia? Beutiful country. Teen friendly.

I know. There are positives but just none that surround holidays or days out 😬

I’m taking my son here later this year. Dubrovnik airport only a 30’min transfer. it’s my favourite country. An hour away from Bosnia, 30 mins from Montenegro (also stunning countries I’ve visited). There’s a cable car, zip line, quad bikes, sea kayaking, boat trips, visit the old walled city. This hotel is a short public bus ride away from the old town.

Go on your holiday and get rid of the miserable bastard for good. He sounds enchanting.
