Housing association saying I’m unreasonable I don’t think I am !!!

HAunreasonable · 24/01/2025 08:23

The HA need to do planned repair/upgrade work. The appt slots are 830-1230 or 130-530.
I asked them to book mine around school runs but twice they’ve turned up when I’m out ? Now saying that if they are ‘refused entry’ a third time it will lead to further action???

Surely they have to be fair about this and come at a time that works for everyone

OP posts:
Hankunamatata · 25/01/2025 18:50

They won't use a key. Relative was a trades man for council. The number of people who tried to pull a fast one and blame him for damage to carpets, walls, funiture even when they were in the house during the works.
They ended up always going in pairs with an apprentice and taking photos before and after

PonkyPonky · 25/01/2025 18:54

I’d leave a note on the door saying you’ll be back by 9:15 at the latest and to please wait. Perhaps leave a packet of biscuits out to sweeten the deal!

Glasgowgal200 · 25/01/2025 18:57

Similar thing happened to me. My mums smoke alarms were due to be tested, unfortunately she is terminally ill and mostly bedbound so unable to answer the door etc. They sent out a letter saying they had tried to gain access but no answer. I phoned to rearrange the appointment for an afternoon one, I turned up at least an hour before it but apparently had missed the electricians, phoned up again to rearrange mentioned they came in the morning and appointment was for afternoon so not happy. Long story a bit shorter made another appointment, I turned up to my mums in the morning just in case they pulled the same trick again, they came just after 1pm. So was probably the 1st appointment after lunch. Letters always stated that they have the power to actually break down the door for access. This is a Glasgow housing association.

Mumof2girls2121 · 25/01/2025 19:07

You are not being unreasonable, I work for a housing association and it’s very reasonable to book around school run times, I always offer a 10-2 option

asrl78 · 25/01/2025 19:21

Mumto42005 · 25/01/2025 17:39

My HA do a 10-2pm time slot to avoid school runs - do yours not do this?

It does sound like you aren't being flexible either in fairness. These things require flexibility on both parts.

Even if they do, there might be a ton of other people who want that slot as well, and they can't please everyone. It is like (in the pre-COVID days) trying to get a doctor's appointment for first thing in the morning because you have a day job and don't want to have to take a days leave, but there are never any slots.

podirnot · 25/01/2025 19:25

Pick a morning slot and put kids in breakfast club

asrl78 · 25/01/2025 19:28

Wellwhynotthen · 24/01/2025 08:48

They often do though, fuckers!

In my experience tradespeople have contacted me if they can make an appointment earlier than planned to check if that is convenient, but that is why they have estimated arrival times spanning hours. Same with getting a large household appliance delivered.

justbeingasmartarse · 24/01/2025 09:14

Arrange childcare with who though? It doesn’t sound like the OP gas much of a support network.

Is there not a professional childminder/babysitter anywhere in the area the OP can hire for the purpose of taking the kids to school?

There are some interesting replies on here for sure

I had this, HA decided they were going to do loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and put in a heat pump system (that I did not want) for every visit a full survey and asbestos separate survey were needed, I worked it out and they wanted to do 27 visits! I refused but ended up moving in the end, they were constantly badgering and ringing, I know its their house but are we not entitled to live in peace? No way could we take time off work for 27 visits🙄

May I ask which housing association it was please? I'd LOVE a heat pump system! Massively reduced energy bills!

Costcolover · 25/01/2025 19:58

GreenYellowBrown · 24/01/2025 09:09

YABVVVU. These people have got jobs to do, you’re not the only person in the world to ever have had a child. They’ve given you a time slot so you need to arrange childcare for that time. Presumably this is being done for free so count yourself lucky rather than moaning.

What a vile, foul attitude just because OP lives in social housing! Wow. Do you speak to everyone like that whom you deem to be 'below' you?!

Dillydaydreams · 25/01/2025 20:03

DaisyChain505 · 24/01/2025 08:41

You’re having something repaired in your home for free.

people who have mortgages and have to pay for their own repairs will be given times slots just like this too and have to deal with it.

you don’t deserve special treatment over anyone else.

Repairs are funded out of rent. It’s not free!

Check your facts before posting.

Anyone else just want to scream?

YaWeeFurryBastard · 24/01/2025 08:55

You’re living in subsidised housing, I think you need to be a bit more accommodating tbh when they’re coming to ensure you have decent living conditions.

We have to work around tradesmen and we own our house and our paying ourselves, it’s very normal.

It is not subsidised. It is not for profit. Get your facts straight!

NotVeryFunny · 25/01/2025 20:14

biscuitsandbooks · 25/01/2025 15:51

You still don't get total flexibility as a homeowner, though, especially with things like internet repairs or appointments with big utility companies.

I've lost count of the number of times I've missed work because BT have given a time slot of "8-1" or "1-6" with no other flexibility.

That’s not really relevant to the point I was responding to.

RareFatball · 25/01/2025 20:32

HAunreasonable · 24/01/2025 08:32

I asked about this and they said I have to be there ?

Leave a note on your door saying you will be back in XX amount of minutes as had to take/collect children from school.

maddiemookins16mum · 25/01/2025 20:33

You’re making this much, much harder than it needs to be.

Bernardo1 · 25/01/2025 20:48

I guess it depends on the H.A.
Those tenant's I know, mostly are with Peabody. My understanding is they are accomodating and efficient, but maybe they're lucky.

My closest pal, has this well sorted. Her estate manager is very good, but doesn't have ultimate clout and power. But she knows his manager and the one above, has their mobiles.
'She'll say "David can't get this done, not his fault." One case, involving a lift, she copied in local councilors and M.P.. both same party as the Council, so the s**t hit the fan. Local or National newspapers can also have similar effect, if interested enough.

PaintedPottery · 25/01/2025 20:53

until recently I lived in an HA property and would have to do school run, they’d just make a note of it so the operatives were aware. It wasn’t a problem.

Chattyham · 25/01/2025 21:24

Well surely 8:30-12:30 will be ok and if they get there before you’re back from school run leave a note to say you’ll be back in the next 10 minutes or whatever and could they please wait. Surely this isn’t that hard, people organise these thing around work, school runs and other things.

Deeperthantheocean · 25/01/2025 22:22

Like with any sort of house stuff work, you can state the times you're available but the team has a schedule.

If it's done by the Council the emailing a to be passed on to b takes time and because they're paid by them and not you personally they will log not available and move on to next job.

It's sod law they will turn up between a timeframe when you're doing drop off. Only thing you can do really is leave note in window saying you will be back in ..... minutes and have a mug of tea and bacon sarnie ready? Xx

OneBrightAmberDuck · 25/01/2025 22:44

I worked for a large HA in the south east and arranged repairs. They had the same slots and whilst we couldn’t give a more specific time, if you said the school run times, we would put it on the engineer’s notes and they had some autonomy to schedule jobs around the times

Craycraycatbaby · 25/01/2025 22:45

SharpOpalNewt · 24/01/2025 11:25

If it is so important they need to use their common sense and provide a smaller window for the appointment. A school run is not a frivolous reason for not being at home.

It's clearly an EICR she's having which take 4 hours. She's been given two four hour time slots, a morning and an afternoon. They can't provide a smaller time slot. The operative attending will be a specific operative who does eicr checks so he can't just hang around and wait for her, as he'll be late to his next appointment.

I work for a housing association and you WILL be taken to court for failing to provide access to your property. An adult must be present for the duration of the repair for safety of the operatives. They get accused very often of theft even when the tenants are at home! It's absolutely disgusting the way operatives get treated.

And all you saying "just stick a note on the door and say you'll be back at 9.15".. you do realise the ops have a diary full of work for the day? You'd be the first to complain if they ended up missing your appointment because they were sat in their van waiting for someone to get home 🤷🏼‍♀️

Is It? Our HA gives 4 to 5 hour time slots for everything, All the time And others here have said the same.

What about the Peabody Operative who was caught going through a tenants knicker drawer. I suppose she should put up and shut up because shes a. female and b. a SH tenant
