Housing association saying I’m unreasonable I don’t think I am !!!

HAunreasonable · 24/01/2025 08:23

The HA need to do planned repair/upgrade work. The appt slots are 830-1230 or 130-530.
I asked them to book mine around school runs but twice they’ve turned up when I’m out ? Now saying that if they are ‘refused entry’ a third time it will lead to further action???

Surely they have to be fair about this and come at a time that works for everyone

A non HA person has to pay for labour and costs of any/all repairs - it is not covered by rent or mortgage - so it really is free for a HA tenant.

(plus private rent and mortgage can be much higher)

Er no. People who privately rent don't have to pay for repairs! The landlord pays.

GreenYellowBrown · 24/01/2025 09:09

YABVVVU. These people have got jobs to do, you’re not the only person in the world to ever have had a child. They’ve given you a time slot so you need to arrange childcare for that time. Presumably this is being done for free so count yourself lucky rather than moaning.

Edited

Free? So the OP doesn't pay rent for her house? I live in a HA house and pay rent. Can you tell me where this magical HA that gives out houses for free is please? I quite like to save £600 per month!

What if a tenant was unwell and in hospital, or had an urgent unmissable medical appointment for chemotherapy? Or someone dies and they were attending a funeral.

Oh well, I'm sure the compliance work must take priority over all other life events 🙄

I i had a contractor a. lie and say they couldnt make phone contact with me about planned works My phone log says otherwise I phoned them twice in early November and told them m my dad had died. They agreed works could wait till the New Year and then the HA wrote me a letter this week saying the contractors hadnt had any phone contact with me. I phoned the contractors and they asked why i hadnt phoned themsince early November. I had to remind them that my dad had died and his body was with the coroner because of the way he died. Also been trying to sort adult social care for elderly mother. Apparently though keeping in touch withh these contractors should have joined the very long list of people tocontact that Dad had died plus DMs social care anddealing with the accident that she had on Boxing Day.

Grief is the latest "luxury" not allowed for SH tenants

You’re having something repaired in your home for free.

people who have mortgages and have to pay for their own repairs will be given times slots just like this too and have to deal with it.

you don’t deserve special treatment over anyone else.

People actually believe this shit don't they?

Media has done a good job of vilifying SH tenants.

Tenants pay rent, the cost of repairs are built into that rent. Repairs are the landlords responsibility, they are providing a service and they charge accordingly for that service.

That is private and SH tenants.

JenniferBooth · 24/01/2025 21:19

@HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend Did you actually say that these checks should take priority over a funeral So if my HA had wanted to do a check or visit on 28th Nov. i should just not have gone to my dads funeral and stayed in for it.

"housing association insists tenant should miss family funeral for safety check"
You honestly wouldnt mind that as a newspaper headline!

And additionally, as a mortgage payer, I get to talk to the contractors I hire, I explain about school runs and get to choose the contractor I use as someone who will work around my schedule!

JMSA · 24/01/2025 22:33

Could be worse. You could be trying to navigate a full day of work around it!
YABU.

This. ^ I can't believe the shite some people come out with. Social Housing is not 'free,' and the repairs are not 'free.' The repairs are funded via the rent payments, and many tenants pay rent.

As @JenniferBooth said earlier, some posters seem so jealous of people in social housing, and sooooo bitter that people are in it. But they also seemingly would never live in it, as it's beneath them. 🙄

More fool them. I'm in a beautiful new build HA property on a tiny estate in a sought after rural area, huge garden, double drive, lifetime tenancy that passes to my children and their children and so on. I wouldn't be able to afford such a lovely house with a mortgage. If anyone thinks I'm "beneath" them, I wouldn't want to be friends with someone like that anyway, so they can think on.

JenniferBooth · 25/01/2025 15:11

And yet according to what ive just found on Twitter many HAs shut their offices on the day of the Queens funeral.

The phrase "two tier" springs to mind!

That's rubbish. If I had a contractor coming in and had to do a school run or work, I would just arrange for them to come outside of these times. There also wouldn't be a requirement that I had to be there all the time, so I could leave a key, or get them to come pre school run, then pop out etc etc. there is way more flexibility when you are booking it yourself.

You still don't get total flexibility as a homeowner, though, especially with things like internet repairs or appointments with big utility companies.

I've lost count of the number of times I've missed work because BT have given a time slot of "8-1" or "1-6" with no other flexibility.

I live in social housing and i have the same kind of shit with utilities like BT too PLUS!!!!!!! the other stuff we have been talking about here

You have seen the mentality in the sector from the poster who thinks a check should come before a chemo appointment or a funeral.

Mumto42005 · 25/01/2025 17:39

My HA do a 10-2pm time slot to avoid school runs - do yours not do this?

It does sound like you aren't being flexible either in fairness. These things require flexibility on both parts.

keeponandonandon · 25/01/2025 17:59

Book it for the school holidays it's only 3 weeks away, unless it's an urgent repair of course.

Diomi · 25/01/2025 18:13

Nanny0gg · 24/01/2025 09:41

That's helpful.

She's just explained why that's not possible.

Not everyone has friends or family nearby to help

It is a total pain but it is what everyone has to sort out, even when it seems impossible.

Lizziespring · 25/01/2025 18:14

It's must be very frustrating for you, being caught between the landlord and the school each wanting you to fit inflexible rules. Would you be able to ring the contractor direct and leave your mobile number so they can tell you they're en route and wait for ten minutes if necessary? Or can they come at half term?

Xmasxrackers · 25/01/2025 18:32

HAunreasonable · 24/01/2025 08:28

There’s nobody else who can do
the school run and no suitable neighbours to ask (one is very elderly , one works nights and the others I hardly see I think they work )

OP I am house by association and when I ask for a slot around the school run they are brilliant. Speak to the office and tell them

Sleepytiredyawn · 25/01/2025 18:32

Can you not choose a morning slot and book breakfast club?

fingerbobz · 25/01/2025 18:32

This is kind of the same for anyone who needs work at their house

Book breakfast/after school club
Ask a classmates parent to pick up as a favour
Ask a neighbour to let them in

Isinglass20 · 25/01/2025 18:38

Chardonnaybadbeastlycat
Its bad customer service if they don’t do the repairs.
When you think of the conditions some people are having to live in when the HA don’t do repairs.
If these repairs are required under Fire regulations then the HA will take action on grounds of your Anti social behaviour because it invalidates building insurance

FFS. OP had already said why no-one of those options are available to her.

She has. They've refused. Not all housing associations work like yours @Xmasxrackers

And I could go on, because SO many posters haven't bothered reading OP's posts.

chaoticneurotic1st · 25/01/2025 18:46

If they are threatening you with further action this will be a tenancy warning(im a housing officer). This is not bad if its the forst one but it will always stay against your account. I used to be a sh tenant and always phoned and asked for them to call before 8.20 or after 8 50 because of school runs. Dont speak to the housing call centre, speak to the contractors office. They hate missed calls it messes up their bookings if you explain that there is absolutely no one who can do the school run or wait in they normally agree.
