To tell my sister she's mad for naming her daughter this?

First baby. The name is a word. A word you would use to describe a very pleasurable feeling. No, not orgasm, before anyone says it!

It's absurd and I think someone should tell her. AIBU to say 'sorry, but it's ridiculous. You need to choose something else'.

My mum is all very supportive and says 'well, sometimes we don't like names. Then can't imagine them as anything else'

I think this is an exception.

May as well tell you the name actually, as my sister isn't going to be on MN! The name is Euphoria

She wants to call her Ewie for short, the nickname our late dad went by (he was an Ewan)

It's definitely a name. Google is your friend. And not your wayward brother's son's middle name.

I could only find Euphrosyne!

With my kids I had to do the practical thing and imagine their names on a CV, it weeded out anything stupid for sure.

I have always rued the day - on this basis - when little Finn Anne Sol Crim went for that job at the FCA. One can only live and learn.

Copperoliverbear · 23/01/2025 23:00

I'd tell her sorry it's awful

In the 'victorian times' - when we were going about building an empire by smashing other cultures - and our heritage - all over the place, people were called Sarah, Elizabeth, Thomas, David, Charlotte or John.

Not true! The Victorians had some really funny names! 😁

I like that more, probably! So the pronunciation would be UFrosinee. Better than Faif-uniqai- oner- twuth. Or just Karen. Or Sarah who's married to Steve and talks about their cleaner. It's just a name for a baby. The sister is unreasonable because it's none of her business.

BonnieBairn · 23/01/2025 23:02

It's all very well saying we should leave the parents to it when they name their baby but this a person we are talking about. This is a person that has to go through school, uni amd the rest of their lives with a shit name their parents thought was cute. As parents we are responsible for giving our children proper names, names that could be used in a range if occupations. Names that our children won't be embarrassed by.

Oh stop it! Divisive? It's not like she's calling the baby Adolf is it. That would be divisive.
It's her choice, not the OPs. She should mind her own business.

Divisive as in love it or hate it. There is no middle ground for having a drugs related name

GreenCandleWax · 23/01/2025 23:06

It sounds as though your DSis was looking for a name that sounds like your DF's name, but Ewie is setting her up for a lifetime of being teased, or even bullied at school.

What about Eve (Evie) or Yvonne or its Irish equivalent Siobhan (pronounced chivaun)?

outerspacepotato · 23/01/2025 23:06

Her schoolmates will call her Eww.

That's just setting her up for awful things like bullying. Looking for a job will be hard. Can you imagine meeting the big boss and Hello, my name is Ew.

Save up some money for her 18th birthday so she can change it if she wants.

Ohwtfnow · 23/01/2025 23:09

YANBU. That is a terrible name for someone to be saddled with.

SeaUrchinHat · 23/01/2025 23:11

Just what everyone needs: a judgemental sister. You don’t have a say in the matter OP and, like it or not, it sounds as though a lot of thought has gone into the name. She’ll undoubtedly end up with a nickname anyway.

FoxInTheForest · 23/01/2025 23:11

AdoraBell · 23/01/2025 20:27

Personally I would leave her to it.

That said, I saw a TV programme today with a family. DC were called Blayze and Ember. The young one looked extremely angry whenever her name was spoken.

Ember isn't that uncommon

Unless you are living in some backwater place your children will be working with people who come from all over the world with a wide range of names. It's really not an issue in today's world.

You are aware it’s not the OPs baby are you? No name suggestions needed considering it’s none of her business.

There’s far worse names out there and it’s all down to choice. One of my friends has a Das called Cyril and I think that’s ridiculous but a) clearly she doesn’t and b) it’s not my DS.

Cyril is very old fashioned, but at least it's a name

NotVeryFunny · 23/01/2025 23:19

I quite like it too.

CrushingOnRubies · 23/01/2025 23:22

Would I pick it for my DD? Probably not. However I have heard of much worse

Ladamesansmerci · 23/01/2025 23:23

It's a stupid name, I agree. Not your baby though. I do wish people would consider that babies have to grow up with these names though.

soundsys · 23/01/2025 23:24

Euphemia as an alternative? As that is actually a name!

HangingOver · 23/01/2025 23:25

Isthissleepthingworking · 23/01/2025 20:46

Euphegenia?

As in ‘Euphengenia Doutbfire dear’

In the book she was Euphemia. I wonder why they changed it for the movie.

Aftergloww · 23/01/2025 23:25

This is why people need lists with admissible names lol

Grammarnut · 23/01/2025 23:26

Fine with me. Greek. 😊

LinnettdeBelleforte · 23/01/2025 23:26

YANBU. It sounds really tacky and early era TOWIE.

Eww didn’t even cross my mind and I doubt most children would bat an eye. Seems to me, as usual it would be the adults likely saying something about a child’s name and their kids overhearing them and say something to the child.

Many of my classmates had different names and were from different backgrounds and no one was made fun of because why would young children know any different unless someone older likely mentioned it.

Ryanstartedthefire22 · 23/01/2025 23:31

I think its alright actually!
