To tell my sister she's mad for naming her daughter this?

First baby. The name is a word. A word you would use to describe a very pleasurable feeling. No, not orgasm, before anyone says it!

It's absurd and I think someone should tell her. AIBU to say 'sorry, but it's ridiculous. You need to choose something else'.

My mum is all very supportive and says 'well, sometimes we don't like names. Then can't imagine them as anything else'

I think this is an exception.

May as well tell you the name actually, as my sister isn't going to be on MN! The name is Euphoria

She wants to call her Ewie for short, the nickname our late dad went by (he was an Ewan)

YANBU. That is a terrible name for someone to be saddled with.

What's your name?

Copperoliverbear · 23/01/2025 23:00

I'd tell her sorry it's awful

Sure thing. Carol.

phoenixrosehere · 23/01/2025 23:35

I was expecting something much worse, but once again I haven’t seen one name yet that is as bad as posters say they are on AIBU.

The nickname I would say something about though

I’d ask if I could call her Ria for short.

DrFosterWentToGloucester23 · 23/01/2025 23:38

Positive affirmation names are very common in some cultures. We have a Praise, Blessing, Princess, Melody and Miracle at school, to name just a few.

Faith, Hope, Charity, Joy, Prudence and Grace are all accepted names so I’m not sure why Euphoria is any different. It’s not my taste but there are far worse!

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 23/01/2025 23:39

I think Euphoria is OK. It means something similar to Joy or Felicity and has a pleasant sound.

GoldenSunflowers · 23/01/2025 23:42

U 4 Real? No, Eu-pho-riá.

Actually, it’s not that bad. I’ve got used to it over the course of a few pages here so I could see it becoming unremarkable after a while.

I knew a Eufrosina, nn Fina.

It's all very well saying we should leave the parents to it when they name their baby but this a person we are talking about. This is a person that has to go through school, uni amd the rest of their lives with a shit name their parents thought was cute. As parents we are responsible for giving our children proper names, names that could be used in a range if occupations. Names that our children won't be embarrassed by.

It's really not that awful and they can change it. Nobody seems to be Sharon or Tracy anymore. Presumably they're all known by other old lady names now. Such as Lily. Or Rose. Or Mae.maybe all the Sharons, Duanes, Lees, and Joannes, Jason's, Karens just changed their names?

latetothefisting · 23/01/2025 23:43

Wow, I think 'Ewie" as a nickname is even worse than Euphoria as a name, although they're both dreadful
She does understand that Ew is an expression of disgust?
It's like giving your dd the nickname "Icky" or similar

And your name is? I'm sure anyone wanting to be infantile could probably take the piss out of how it sounds.

I'm not sure your username puts you in the top 200 baby names suggester list. Good luck with the painful kink.

This is what I said. Hideous name, and even more hideous 'nickname.' 😆

PennyApril54 · 24/01/2025 00:09

It's a tricky one. In a way I think she'd be better just going with Ewie as at least then it's a direct link. There's also Evie which is similar although pronounced differently. Also Eugenie, Eunice, Una, Ursula, any name beginning with U or Ew or Yu.. It's lovely to acknowledge your dad in this way I guess the idea just needs a bit of fine tuning. Overall Euphoria is not so bad. ❤️

I like it.

Not your baby not your decision. My sis didn’t like my kids names but it’s sod all of her business. I thought her choices were dull as ditch water, but she’s entitled to her own choice and I’ve got better manners than to point that out

Omg is that the saying i thought it was dull as dish water. 😳 🙈

PennyApril54 · 24/01/2025 00:11

She could also go with something that spells out the initials such as Emma Willow Isabel Eve

It's nothing like any of those names!

Divisive as in love it or hate it. There is no middle ground for having a drugs related name

I don't think it's a drug related name.
there are plenty of other ways of experiencing Euphoria.
rollercoasters, seeing a band you love live, achieving something that was physically difficult, then getting to the end of it and taking in the achievement, some kinds of meditation.
I've never taken any recreational drugs, but I know the feeling of Euphoria.

Heard a little girl called Navy recently. Never heard of it except the colour

Well, it's not totally unique, OP. Ancestry has thousands of Euphoria records!

Apropos of naming a child after feelings, if I had another daughter I think
Schadenfreud would be lovely (Fruede, pronounced 'Froidy' for short)

I totally agree with you there. The closest of those to any kind of pleasure would be Joy. The early 18th century hymn, Joy to the world, for example, places this name as entirely wholesome, in stark contrast to Euphoria.

NewdayNewstartin2025 · 24/01/2025 06:09

Euphoria 🤣

Could be worse, Disaster, Petulance, Misery, Rhapsody, Storm,

There is a Calvin Klein perfume called Euphoria, maybe that is what inspired the the OP's sister

And what's wrong with getting inspiration from that? My DSs - Oldspice and Haikarate - would be so offended at you questioning the provenance of their names?

Haven't read full thread so someone else may have made this point but how would Navy fare if she wanted to join the Army?

Especially if she ended up marrying a man called Raph(ael)!

That reminds me of a MN thread from a while ago, where OP's friend/family member called her DD Navy-Lee.

To begin with, before saying the actual name, she 'teased' that it was an adjective followed by a boy's name, and the best guess by a country mile was Fierce-Barry Grin

Well. No. Mark is derived from the Nordic god Mars. Albeit loosely through the passage of Judaism. Bryce actually means blemish or stain.

But we're talking about actual names as we know them now, regardless of their meanings, derivations or history.

If you met somebody with the (birth certificate) name 'Twin', you would most probably think it very odd (and, personally, I would wonder what their sibling was called, then!) - but you wouldn’t question it for a second if you met a Thomas.
