To tell my sister she's mad for naming her daughter this?

First baby. The name is a word. A word you would use to describe a very pleasurable feeling. No, not orgasm, before anyone says it!

It's absurd and I think someone should tell her. AIBU to say 'sorry, but it's ridiculous. You need to choose something else'.

My mum is all very supportive and says 'well, sometimes we don't like names. Then can't imagine them as anything else'

I think this is an exception.

May as well tell you the name actually, as my sister isn't going to be on MN! The name is Euphoria

She wants to call her Ewie for short, the nickname our late dad went by (he was an Ewan)

She'll be called Eufy as a nickname at school you know.

Great name for a young person.

There’s far worse names out there and it’s all down to choice. One of my friends has a Das called Cyril and I think that’s ridiculous but a) clearly she doesn’t and b) it’s not my DS.

I think that's a nice one...

Same, and it also links back to Quaker names which were often like this.

Which one of those was the name of the horse?!

JudgeJ · 24/01/2025 06:49

Itiswhysofew · 23/01/2025 20:29

Teachers are gonna have a right laugh at that one 🤣

And have to waste time sorting out 'bullying ' complaints from sister when her child is mercilessly teased about the name she lumbered her with.

Skipskipperroo · 24/01/2025 06:51

My sister named her little girl Prunella. I personally hate the name but it's not my child so I've never said anything.

Oh dear, I am to blame then I think Blush she use to love the name Victoria at the beginning of the pregnancy... I couldn't help but sing 'Victoriaaa!' From the Victoria plumb ad Grin

Oh dear, OP.

You turned your sister off Victoria and now she's going with Euphoria?

Better hope she's only trolling you and is still planning to go with Victoria.

PrincessOfPreschool · 23/01/2025 20:27

I know a child called LaRose.

I prefer Euphoria by a distance she the nickname is very cute, with a lovely family connection. It's genuinely not awful. But she could go with other Eu names like Eustacia and... Can't think of anything...

Eugenie

NewdayNewstartin2025 · 24/01/2025 06:09

Euphoria 🤣

Could be worse, Disaster, Petulance, Misery, Rhapsody, Storm,

Storm is gaining a bit more popularity as a name now. Storm Huntley has her own daily national TV show; and Ronan Keating's wife is also called Storm.

DressOrSkirt · 23/01/2025 21:50

YABU
Obviously it's none of your business. But I think it's probably a nice name, like Happiness.

Edit: I obviously didn't read the thread properly, but Euphoria is perfectly lovely

Edited

Only problem is it sounds very like 'a penis' - as Ken Dodd knew full well!

Maybe Euphoria will be next then

@BornSandyDevotional

Well. No. Mark is derived from the Nordic god Mars.

Mars was Roman - the god of war. The Nordic equivalent would be Tyr (Thor’s big brother).

Nooo there's so many nice similar names.
Ephemera
Elphaba
Alethea
Euphemia
Esmerelda
Emerald

How is ephemera better?! At least euphoria means something nice.

Sleepysleepycoffeecoffee · 24/01/2025 07:32

It’s an awful name IMO but at least she hasn’t chosen to add ‘Rae’ on the end. All such names equally as awful.

miliop · 24/01/2025 07:34

My problem with giving babies names like this is that they can't possibly live up to them.

What if Euphoria turns out to be a bit ugly, with a boring personality?

Better to call her something sensible. Less pressure.

Ephemera is absolutely hilarious

It's a classical greek name. I'm sorry the 90s were so rough for you.

You sound happy and well.

brunettemic · 24/01/2025 07:40

Svenred · 23/01/2025 23:16

Cyril is very old fashioned, but at least it's a name

If you name someone something it’s a name. My point it, what others think is irrelevant really.

brunettemic · 24/01/2025 07:41

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 24/01/2025 06:42

I think that's a nice one...

Precisely my point, I don’t, you do…neither of which are relevant to the person naming their child.

JudgeJ · 24/01/2025 07:42

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 24/01/2025 07:19

Only problem is it sounds very like 'a penis' - as Ken Dodd knew full well!

On his retirement, General De Gaulle's wife allegedly told a dinner party that she was looking forward to 'a penis', luckily the astonished guests realised eventually that she meant 'happiness '.

MumblesParty · 24/01/2025 08:00

Awful name. People forget that babies are going to grow up to be actual people, who have to interact with the world, make friends, get jobs etc. A baby isn’t an accessory, or a puppy, an extension of themselves that they give a crazy name to because it suits their agenda at the time.

OP I would definitely express my opinion, although sadly I doubt your sister will take any notice. The “it’s my baby and I’m going to blight their life with a stupid name” brigade are hard to shift.

SouthLondonMum22 · 24/01/2025 08:02

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 23/01/2025 22:26

It might be a name, that doesn't mean it's a good idea to use it. Maybe you'd have got away with it in Victorian times!

There's so many children out there with horrible names that they are saddled with.

I'm sorry but if it was my sister, I would have to be honest. The connotations are horrible.

Saying it’s not your style is fine. Demanding that she doesn’t use it like you get a say like OP seems to think is a different story.

I am indeed. I'm not sure how you divined that from my post. But delighted that I radiate happiness wherever I go. Have a smashing Friday.

Calebbloomfest · 24/01/2025 08:09

Not a name I’d chose.

her baby - her choice.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 24/01/2025 08:09

Not a nice name to give a baby. How to set your child up for years of bullying and ridicule.

It sounds like she's looking for something to hang 'Ewie' off. How do you pronounce that? Is it You-ee? If it is maybe Eugenie would be better?
