I need something one up from the orange Tampax - why do they not sell the purple ones here?

I’m 50 and I’m in the last few months getting through a super plus in an hour and a half. I obviously supplement with heavy duty pads and I’m aware I need to see a doctor but it’s been intermittent and right now I need something to get me through work tomorrow and sleep tonight. I’m having to set an alarm at night and I’m still ending up washing bedding. I’m still regular as clockwork but the flow has gone crazy. Why do the Americans get one flow up from our orange ones? I’m supplementing like crazy because I can at least buy that stuff and I will go to the doctors but AIBU that I can’t deal with the short term literal mess with a product I know exists but isn’t sold here?

As someone with this issue who owns these pants, don't bother :-/

Really? Which ones? I find the 24 hour lacy bikini ones are better than any tampon or pad I've ever used. But I did buy a pair in a different style and they leaked through the leg holes, so I think it's might be partly down to size and shape.

Hufflemuff · 23/01/2025 19:37

This is awful advice, I'd never share with a teenager, but I'd stick 2 up at night!! But make sure you remember you have 2 in!!

When I've been this heavy in the past I've literally taken my tablet into the bathroom and sat on the loo for an hour to just let some of it fall out! Gives your fanny a break from the mega tampons too!

I agree with this. If men can have hour long luxury shits, we can have an hour 'bleeding out'.

dementedpixie · 23/01/2025 19:46

@TheParrot I bought a reusable applicator for non applicator tampons. I only like using an applicator

You’ve got the wrong ones.

Some of the lighter ones aren’t much help.

the full coverage super heavy however. Spot on as a time buyer.

Gulp - I guess I need to figure out non applicator ones then 😳 didn’t see that coming in my 50s .

You did ask for the ‘for 12 yr olds’.

DEEP BREATH - I have a puppy pad. Which is ridiculous.
I’m seriously considering 2 tampons at once tonight. Which is ridiculous, but I’m hugely thankful for the plan to tie them together (which is really sensible)
Never bought a non applicator tampon in my life … tomorrow will be a new sort of 50 year old puberty thing … um …

RitaFromTheRanch · 23/01/2025 20:27

Lillets are much better than tampax and also less pinchy.

Haven't rtft but get a mooncup, some tranexamic acid and mefanemic acid from the GP. Life changing

JoJothegerbil · 23/01/2025 20:36

When I was going through this pre-hysterectomy I'd flood an orange Tampax in less than an hour. I gave up on tampons in the end and used a mooncup. At night I used use the mooncup and two maternity pads end to end and sleep on a towel.

I’m really surprised at that. I think they’re life changing good.

THIS IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE. But I use high dose ibuprofen to stop or significantly reduce my periods. www.nm.org/healthbeat/healthy-tips/can-ibuprofen-reduce-menstrual-flow

I second this. I use normal dose consistently through days 2 & 3 and it reduces flow a lot. Start taking it as soon as your period starts. My period are fairly heavy still but I think (hope) they’re fading a bit now.

faithbuffy · 23/01/2025 21:01

If you want a back up, these reusable pads are great and capable of coping with very heavy periods

Endofyear · 23/01/2025 21:16

I would recommend a merina coil - it's changed my life. I don't have periods now, just the odd bit of spotting occasionally. After a lifetime of heavy and painful periods, it's absolutely wonderful!

You can buy a reusable applicator. I got one in sainsbury's. I can't use non applicator tampons as my fingers are too short!! The reusable applicate is brilliant.

I can't sit on the loo for any length of time when I have my period. Feels like my womb is trying to fall out...

I got whichever say they are for the heaviest flow. I think the same you describe. It said 10 tampons worth, which I dispute!

stargazer02 · 23/01/2025 21:51

I use the Merula XL cup which holds 50ml, plus period pants and a post-birth washable pad because the cup would maybe last an hour if I was lucky. I believe there's slightly bigger ones now too.

As for period pants, I have wuka, modibodi and some cheap ones that are just a waterproof layer and a thin cotton layer for comfort. The top two feel like they sag when I wear them and they get wet, and also feel like I might get thrush. I use as a backup only. I prefer the non absorbent one and use my own pads for quick changes

Hayley1256 · 23/01/2025 21:54

They have the purple ones on Amazon (with applicator) but they are around £20 for 45

The ten is regular ones.

Turns out one super is three regular. Lmao.

Realise posted a long time ago OP but noticed on Boots the Purple Super Plus Extra Tampax Pearl are listed. Out of stock currently but maybe keep an eye if still wanting these that they may introduce them…
