I need something one up from the orange Tampax - why do they not sell the purple ones here?

I’m 50 and I’m in the last few months getting through a super plus in an hour and a half. I obviously supplement with heavy duty pads and I’m aware I need to see a doctor but it’s been intermittent and right now I need something to get me through work tomorrow and sleep tonight. I’m having to set an alarm at night and I’m still ending up washing bedding. I’m still regular as clockwork but the flow has gone crazy. Why do the Americans get one flow up from our orange ones? I’m supplementing like crazy because I can at least buy that stuff and I will go to the doctors but AIBU that I can’t deal with the short term literal mess with a product I know exists but isn’t sold here?

Another recommendation for mooncups! I had horrendous periods in my 30s and 40s but started using a mooncup around aged 45 and my periods got lighter and less painful! I’ve had a coil for the past 9 years with very light periods but at 56 I’m still getting the bloody things 😡😡

TheParrot · 23/01/2025 18:52

When Miumsnet is good it is really, really good. I’m grateful. Not least to be reminder that I have puppy pads in my utility room that I hadn’t even considered might help me save my in cheap feather mattress topper from landfill and my husband from not knowing if he should help or make himself scarce.

Lillets have always been better than tampax
They always advertised "widthwise expansion" which is obviously better.

I'm not recommending this, but I remember my mum saying she used to use 2 biggest size tampax at once.

When I started flooding around 50 I was using a mooncup, instead of lasting 7 to 9 hours it was overflowing in 20 mins. It was horrible and I couldn't go anywhere.
I was also using super pads as well.
And sleeping on towels or incontinence/puppy pads to limit bedding changes.

Following investigations I had a mirena fitted. Took 5m to settle but has been fantastic. I've very obviously still got a cycle from other body changes but I either don't bleed or just have a smear of it when I wipe.

I know you say you haven't got time but would strongly suggest referring to your GP.

Tranexamic acid also helped at times.

Yep I used to do this too. Put them in side by side and then tie the strings together.

Hi OP in the short term you might be better wearing incontinence underwear at night. You can still use tampons and even an additional pad inside them but they might help reduce the night time sheet washing

Iwiicit · 23/01/2025 18:55

Those Lilets Super Plus tampons saved my life when I was going through the same as you. Nothing else worked as well. I'm through the menopause now and still have boxes and boxes of them left over. I never went out without them.

mamaison · 23/01/2025 18:55

I would use a menstrual cup in that instance, having been there before.

I found at night it would act like a plug, and I would use a maternity cloth pad with it. It would hold up until I made it to the toilet. (Then would be filling up after about 30 mins while I was up and about).

Do get some tranexamic acid (this eventually stops working I found after some months) and get to the dr when you can.

The other benefit of the cup is you can say the volume of the loss.

I had an operation to sort mine as was caused by adenomyosis.

Definitely lillets ultra and I use the always night pads, black packet size 6. They cover more of your underwear so leaking isn't a problem

Snap!

Was so bloody happy when I found the pads in the size six, no pun intended 😂. They are brilliant though

ScaryM0nster · 23/01/2025 19:01

Supermarkets all sell incontinence pants.

For best run at sleep:

Change tampon
biggest pad you can find. Ideally no wings.
Incontience pants.
puppy pad on top of towel.

Thingsthatgo · 23/01/2025 19:01

Superdrug own brand do normal, super, super plus, super plus extra and then Ultra.

mitogoshigg · 23/01/2025 19:05

I rate the supermarket own brand non applicator ones, and supermarket brand incontinence pads are brilliant if you need more

KittensSchmittens · 23/01/2025 19:08

As per almost all other posts, if you have heavy periods you need lil-let's, not tampax. Lil-lets ultra are amazing, they give me a couple of hours leak free. Highly recommended.

Trickabrick · 23/01/2025 19:12

Second what everyone says and definitely wear period pants as an extra layer of security.

UnimaginableWindBird · 23/01/2025 19:15

Lillets are little better than Tampa, and Modibodi and Wuka both do very good heavy-duty period pants.

Also, when I saw the thread title, I thought it was using a new nickname for Donald Trump.

TheParrot · 23/01/2025 19:16

Gulp - I guess I need to figure out non applicator ones then 😳 didn’t see that coming in my 50s .

WithASpider · 23/01/2025 19:21

I bought a reusable applicator when I used LiLets Ultra tampons, couldn't get to grips with them otherwise! Tampax Pearl ultra were fantastic too. My ablation stopped my period completely or I'd still be using them.

Mine was Dame and I think you can buy them in Sainsbury's.

NoOneKnowsWhoYouAre · 23/01/2025 19:21

THIS IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE. But I use high dose ibuprofen to stop or significantly reduce my periods. www.nm.org/healthbeat/healthy-tips/can-ibuprofen-reduce-menstrual-flow

timetobegin · 23/01/2025 19:21

Buy some modibodi period pants.

user8432176409 · 23/01/2025 19:24

Tranexamic acid sorted this for me. This heavy phase didn’t last long, 18mths maybe, now periods lighter side of normal and 60plus day cycle. I’m hoping the end is in sight!

They really aren't difficult. You just push it up and you're ready to go. It's easy I promise 😊

Slowontheup · 23/01/2025 19:27

I got a coil for exactly this reason. I found the ultra lillets leaky and even with maximum period pants was still leaking. It's a bloody nightmare! Literally.

Coil has brought own bleeding pattern but much much less heavy and seems old blood. Im hopeful that over time it will go away completely

uhhuhuhhuhuhuh · 23/01/2025 19:29

Get towelling or cotton mattress protectors off Amazon - two. Sometimes I'm so heavy I don't bother with a sheet and just wash them if they get marked!!

You won't have a problem with Lillets if you're in full flow as it were.

Don't start HRT until you know what's causing it. Progesterone is what you need.

Slowontheup · 23/01/2025 19:29

timetobegin · 23/01/2025 19:21

Buy some modibodi period pants.

As someone with this issue who owns these pants, don't bother :-/
