Spudstogo · 23/01/2025 14:40

Storm eowyn is due to hit tomorrow.
We are only in an amber zone but still 70mph gusts expected
Have elderly famly in Cork,Ireland with 100mph gusts expected.
Im already starting to feel anxious. Does anyone else feel like this about high winds?

Apparently we're red zone but I will believe it when it happens 🤷‍♀️

User09678 · 23/01/2025 14:46

Schools are closed here... most worried about prolonged power cuts.

Spudstogo · 23/01/2025 14:48

I think the fact that Ireland are taking it so seriously is what is making it worse.
All of Ireland in red zone with schools and even Tescos closing!

Red zone where I am, schools and nurseries closed and trains cancelled . Last time we had a warning here it didn't really amount to much.

I'm not particularly anxious I do think the constant weather warnings is too much though.

RuralSage · 23/01/2025 14:52

I have to go out, feeling bit stressed about it

Curtainqueen · 23/01/2025 14:53

If there's anything I have learned from these storm build ups, it's that they very rarely live up to all the hype drummed up by the media for days beforehand. I try to ignore the impending Armageddon fear mongering. I think they have to do this to an extent to cover themselves in case it is more powerful than expected.

Ireland will feel the brunt of it, particularly the west coast as it makes landfall. It will lessen in severity as it heads east, north east.
Ireland also follow a different alert system which tends to be overly cautious.

ManchesterPie · 23/01/2025 15:00

Not at all bothered.

GasPanic · 23/01/2025 15:01

Not really. Just hunker down check there is nothing that will fly away in the garden, make sure the gates are locked etc.

What happens happens.

If its really bad is there a possibility to change plans

Everythingisnumbersnow · 23/01/2025 15:05

Red should always be taken seriously (I was hospitalised a few years ago after going out in a red in Ireland)

I had a call from Docs, they want to see me tomorrow

RocketPanda · 23/01/2025 15:09

I'm in the west of Ireland and have been busy getting everything ready for the animals to hunker down. I'm not far from the cliffs.
Guaranteed some gobshite will need to be rescued from the sea.

Oh OK . hopefully weather is not too bad

NormaleKartoffeln · 23/01/2025 15:13

I live in a very windy party of the country, however we don't have many trees. My biggest concern, as always, is power cuts and flying debris (got a car almost written off by a flying shed once).

Stresshead84x · 23/01/2025 15:26

I'm in glasgow and all the schools are shut- I can't remember that happening in the last few big storms we've had.

FeralNun · 23/01/2025 15:28

You are not unreasonable to feel anxious about a storm that is being mooted as a potential danger to life. What might be helpful is to think about what you can do about it (if anything). Do the things, then pay attention to yourself and your state - how can you soothe and look after yourself as it passes?

I find it calming to remember that I have lamps, candles, a power bank, water and food for a few days, guttering cleared, wood stacked, full gas bottle etc. I realise I sound a bit mad here, but I live off grid bar electricity in the middle of a wood!
I then plan on a calm quiet evening and an early night (as bound to be awake later!)

Spudstogo · 23/01/2025 15:35

@FeralNun you are so right. Ive moved my bins and got a torch and have some battery operated lights. Charged phone etc.
My cat is very restless and animsls always pick up on atmospheric changes.
Wasnt like this for last few storms but ive got a bad feeling about this one.😬

This is the real impact of naming storms and issuing warnings. Agencies, councils, businesses etc all then need to act ie shut down, in order avoid potential liability, resulting in huge economic loss to the country. In the past it was left to individual entities to make the call based on their own eyes and risk assessments, resulting in a much more localised response and minimised overall impact. The irony being the current approach is touted as having great benefit and it allows businesses etc to take preventative action, saving the country significant loss, however the reality I suspect it the very much the opposite.

Cats are like pine cones in this way. We may be in the eye of the storm and we have tied down garden furniture and also tied down the car as it has a high centre of gravity. I have also baked two pineapple upside down cakes as is the local tradition in stormy weather. We were due to try absailing tomorrow but will need to give this a miss. We have a small wind turbine which powers our house which we are worried about (may break in high winds?). DH is keen to keep it on and working as the energy generated could be stored and power the whole house for the rest of the year he says. I'm much more nervous. Anyone else in our position?

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 23/01/2025 15:50

DH was supposed to by flying to Belfast for work tonight and I was going to join him tomorrow for a weekend away.
All of his meetings have cancelled and work have rearranged his flights. I'm just hoping my flight gets cancelled so I can get my money back!

Inextremis · 23/01/2025 15:53

Being on the west coast of Ireland, about half a mile from the ocean, I'm bracing myself for this one. Two weather sites I'm looking at are predicting the equivalent of a Cat 3 hurricane, no less. I've moved everything I think might blow away, we have bottled water, fuel for the fire, fully charged tech, candles, and books/card games at the ready. We've had many a storm here before, but this one is being hyped so much I'm quite apprehensive about it. DH will be working from home tomorrow (if we have internet). I'm just hoping the roof stays on. Will check in when it's passed.

ForgottenPasswordNewAccount · 23/01/2025 15:54

The whole of Ireland is red

I got all my washing done, floors wash hoovered. Made some bread so if the lecky goes we can toast it on the fire, in clean clothes.

Other that not much else can be done
