Spudstogo · 23/01/2025 14:40

Storm eowyn is due to hit tomorrow.
We are only in an amber zone but still 70mph gusts expected
Have elderly famly in Cork,Ireland with 100mph gusts expected.
Im already starting to feel anxious. Does anyone else feel like this about high winds?

Round here high winds often cut off electric so we keep in supplies. I have a small gas camp stove and spare gas cannisters, coal and logs for the fire, candles and charged battery lights, 6 x 2ltr bottles of fresh water, a battery pack to charge up the phones (although we get no signal if the power is out in the village), and a bit of canned food that can be easily cooked on a single gas ring.

We've lost power for 6 - 24hrs a few times over the last year and my stash has been sufficient each time. We are also rural so fallen trees are a menace so we avoid travelling on storm days if it is practical or we drive with care and awareness if we have to go out.

Not a lot more you can do and no point stressing about something you can't control.

Four days without water last week in north Wales. I don't want piwer cuts. We'll be clobbered tonight according to met office.

Seven fence panels delivered this morning to replace the ones destroyed in the last storm. Builder has cancelled. Will start on Monday now.

Loubelou71 · 23/01/2025 18:36

Yes I get anxious like you. I think the media enjoy hyping it up though so hopefully it won't be as bad as they've said.

Have you moved the panels indoors for now?

verycloakanddaggers · 23/01/2025 18:55

I think it is completely rational to be a bit worried - it is the first time the whole of Ireland has been under a red warning and the forecast in the red area is for: very dangerous conditions with widespread disruption and significant impacts expected.

People should be securing loose items and changing plans/avoiding travel.

itsgettingweird · 23/01/2025 18:55

When we had a red warning S coast England schools were shut.

It was very windy and our school had 2 trees come down and one hit the roof.

I'm glad we weren't there - and better stills the kids weren't.

pippapipps · 23/01/2025 18:57

Yes I've got extreme anxiety since yesterday..I'm in Ireland on the coast..it's deadly quiet here just a slight breeze all day, had random thunder at 8am this morning.
As you know everything closed here until we are out of the red zone and listening to the media today has made me a nervous wreck I'm scared..I'm a light sleeper and we're supposed to get hit here from 2am and I know it will wake me and I'll be sat up all night having a panic attack
Apart from that I'm worried about the fences coming down and my cat out all night because she's a very strange cat who refuses to stay in at night.. I am hoping she returns later tonight again for food and that I can keep her in against her will ..on a lighter note dd is delighted she has a day off school

mitogoshigg · 23/01/2025 19:01

Not in the U.K. they just aren't that bad. Be sensible, don't go for woodland walks or drive down lanes with lots of trees but otherwise i carry on regardless. We were under a red warning recently and it simply wasn't bad, I've lived in a part of the world with properly serious weather, this isn't

Breathinginthenewyear · 23/01/2025 19:14

I'm an hour away from Cork. This is the first storm I have been anxious about since Ophelia. They are saying it could be as bad/worse. Thinking of everyone in the west coast.

Flipflopclop · 23/01/2025 19:21

Bit stressed as keeping the horses out ( safer for them ) , husband & I both have to work tomorrow. What will be will be I guess

Funnywonder · 23/01/2025 19:22

I hope it won't be as bad as feared. I was out shopping around 5pm and emergency alerts went off on everyone's phones at once. It was like something out of a disaster movie😬 Everyone paused for a second or two, then went back to buying wine and frozen peas (that might just have been me tbf!) All the schools will be closed here and Tesco, Lidl, council offices and services etc. My Facebook community page is full of businesses announcing that they are closed during the red warning. Am in NI. There's not much to be done but to have a couple of torches ready and power up phones and devices in advance in case of power cuts. We have a gas hob and I can light the flame with a match if need be, to boil a saucepan of water for a cup of tea (v important obvs.)

Try not to worry just stay indoors. I was once in America when a tornado hit which was very scary much worse than in the UK

Iwishiwasapolarbear · 23/01/2025 19:26

We are in north wales in an amber warning. Family funeral tomorrow of a very close member. Really hoping it’s not too bad for us.

also hope everyone in Ireland and the red zones of uk are ok and able to stay safe too

NoisyBear · 23/01/2025 19:28

I went to aldi a few hours ago because we are out of milk and it was like armageddon in there. I got the 2nd last milk in the whole shop. Schools are closed, dh and I are working from home so we are lucky we can all just hunker down. I bought some nice snacks when I got the milk,
and we are making sure all of our devices are charged. What ever will be will be at this point. We are on the West Coast of Ireland so it's going to be a wild ride I think.

YourAzureEagle · 23/01/2025 19:39

We are in yellow, putting scaffolding up from 8 AM, which will go ahead unless its really bad.

ArtTheClown · 23/01/2025 19:46

I'm in an amber warning area, but my house is halfway up a fecking hill and near the coast so I really do get battered by the gusts. As long as my roof tiles stay put I'll be happy.

RebelMoon · 23/01/2025 18:41

No they're laid flat in a sheltered corner, garage on one side ten foot hedge behind and house on the other side. All the concrete posts and barge boards laid across them carefully.

beadystar · 23/01/2025 19:52

Worried. In Dublin. West coast will get the worst but we are preparing for prolonged power cuts.

Mine is off again for 2 days due to the work on the 470.

Not happy!

Oh rats, really 🙈

McGregor33 · 23/01/2025 20:06

I’ve never felt anxious about them but this one seems different in my mind 🙈 I’m charging my torches and hoping for the best- we can’t light candles etc as we have oxygen in the house.

TragoCardboardCopper · 23/01/2025 20:12

I'm in Cornwall and we've yellow warnings for rain today and wind and rain tomorrow and onwards. I've not been concerned at all.

But I've just seen on SM that there's been a bloody tornado at a holiday park near Newquay! Never seen anything like it, there's a video of the aftermath.
