Storm eowyn is due to hit tomorrow.
We are only in an amber zone but still 70mph gusts expected
Have elderly famly in Cork,Ireland with 100mph gusts expected.
Im already starting to feel anxious. Does anyone else feel like this about high winds?

I do think all the media and social media we have access to helps hype it all up in our minds, although I do understand having clear warning systems for these things. We’re just on the southern edge of the amber warning (NE Wales) so hoping it’s not too bad here, Darragh hit us quite hard last month. Thinking of everyone in the red zone tonight, I hope you all have as restful a night’s sleep/undramatic Friday as you can.

Cheersmedears123 · 23/01/2025 20:25

We’re by the coast with a yellow warning, but the tornadoes down our way today were quite alarming. Entire static caravans were flipped upside down and apparently it was over so quickly. Not the usual weather you’d expect. I hope everyone in the red warning areas stay safe.

bellsend · 23/01/2025 20:28

I’m central belt Scotland and we had red warning. Also had the government phone alarm to warn us about it (nearly shat my pants when the phone started, thought it was ww3)

schools closed, no public transport, told not to travel and shops closed. I’ve tied down the trampoline. Apart from that, I’m going to batten down the hatches and watch films with the kids all day.

Kendodd · 23/01/2025 20:28

I'm the opposite, I love a good storm!

Tissuesandfluff · 23/01/2025 20:30

,@bellsend I have switched mine off I too nearly shit myself if the world comes to an end I don't need THAT warning again.

romdowa · 23/01/2025 20:31

I'm in Ireland and when ophelia hit we were without power for nearly 5 days , it was an incredibly frightening storm. So this has me quite anxious as well

Greenbottle123 · 23/01/2025 20:32

What are you worried about?

ERthree · 23/01/2025 20:43

We are as coastal as you can get here, right in the middle of the red zone. We have everything tied down. I have the camping stove out ready to heat soup when we loose power, everything is charged. And i have a stack of candles ready to be lit. We are used to storms but i am dreading this one.

853ax · 23/01/2025 20:47

West Coast Ireland here, things which might ease worry - Worst of storm will be during night 3am-8am so that eases my worry as people will not be so any damage should not be too harmful.
People have been warned so possibly some tidy up down or things secured again less damage will be done.
If you have candles at hand if need get up during night and keep warm might sleep better and not notice storm.

ARichtGoodDram · 23/01/2025 20:49

We've had a funeral postponed tomorrow. I've never known anything like that happen. Family are devastated, they've already waited over three weeks for the funeral.
In some ways I hope it is bad, if that makes sense? So they're not feeling they've been postponed for no reason. It's already been a horrific time (very very unexpected death).

WeegieGrannie · 23/01/2025 20:57

I’m in the red zone in Scotland. School closure was announced in the late morning. Got an email from tesco at 1.30, cancelling tomorrow’s delivery. Got there later this afternoon and it was mobbed.

I’m worried about the plastic sheeting covering part of our flat roof extension. It was flapping madly in the last high wind.

Don’t know how the kids’ll pass the time if there’s a power cut. Life without a screen - the horror.

Meggie2008 · 23/01/2025 21:01

West coast Scotland in the red zone. Shit myself at that national emergency thing earlier

Fontainebleau007 · 23/01/2025 21:10

NI and in the red zone. My children are staying with their grandparents for the night as we are pretty anxious. We've done our best to tie everything down and be prepared but I just want it to be over.

TragoCardboardCopper · 23/01/2025 20:12

I'm in Cornwall and we've yellow warnings for rain today and wind and rain tomorrow and onwards. I've not been concerned at all.

But I've just seen on SM that there's been a bloody tornado at a holiday park near Newquay! Never seen anything like it, there's a video of the aftermath.

Oh what a shame. I've stayed here. Absolute carnage.

My thoughts are with everyone in the danger zones tonight and tomorrow xx

LimeQuoter · 23/01/2025 21:54

Its not you at all. It's because of the media/government. I think they're just trying to make sure everyone listens so that they won't risk their safety and people will protect businesses/homes, tie stuff down etc. They don't want the expense of the cleanup is a huge factor. Unless your home or business needs protecting, for the average person it's a case of not leave loose things outside, stay at home/use basic common sense. I think we're all a bit anxious looking at the news!!

Water41 · 23/01/2025 21:56

I absolutely hate the wind too. Hopefully it calms down a bit before it hits land!

LimeQuoter · 23/01/2025 22:01

I think the past too, we would have just thrown an eye to the 6 o'clock news in the evening at the end of our day. Now we're checking in these warnings and other news more frequently on our phones. I think the more you look at the news, the more it seems more urgent/important to us. And it's so hard not to check in with these things, if your on a lunchbreak, want a distraction etc!!

Vetoncall · 23/01/2025 22:09

We're north coast NI, pretty much everything is going to be closed at least until the red warning ends tomorrow. We've secured everything we can around the house and garden, charged up power banks etc. but I'm really hoping we don't get power outages. Despite all the warnings today I'd bet good money that some idiots will still head to the beaches/seafronts tomorrow because 'we want to see the waves' 🙄 It was lovely here all day today, very much the calm before the storm. Hope everyone stays safe.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 23/01/2025 22:46

I'm anxious, OP, both for us here on Amber alert in the North West with predicted gusts of 85mph, and even more for Scotland and Ireland on Red alert.
This is global warming in action now we have exceeded the 1.5C temperature increase. The might and magnitude of extreme weather is not something we are set up for in the UK and Ireland.
Hopefully the warnings will have been taken seriously and people will stay inside tomorrow unless they are on essential business. Sending good thoughts to you and your family in Ireland.

Saz12 · 23/01/2025 22:55

I'd just heard on the news that the phone alarm wotsit would be played, so it didn't particularly freak me out!

I'm peacefully, passively worried for our roof & surrounding trees, but that's what insurance is for.
Otherwise we'll manage - we'll be able to access water, food, and medication even in a long power cut. We might get a bit chilly, but nothing more than discomfort for us.

Hopefully the forecasts are wrong, but it's from an unusual direction hitting the most densely populated area of Scotland (& all of Ireland, poor buggers), so disruption likely to take a while to clear.

xtinabale55 · 23/01/2025 23:08

I just find this all a bit strange, we seem to have had so far more severe storms than I've ever experienced before and my friend agreed, I also think it's very odd how the phone alert system has been agreed also the same yr this all starts kicking off! Very odd, but I'd say by look of it, it def is going to be a bad one if the entire of Ireland is red and schools all shut! My advice would be for anyone in the west or in its path to stock up on food perishables, bottled water and candles, blankets.

Cece92 · 23/01/2025 23:11

Red warning where I am central Scotland. I work from home Fridays anyway. Daughter is off school. I'm on a half day tomorrow so 9-1.30 feels like a waste of a half day holiday as can't go anywhere. I've charged everything and hoping the power etc stays on. Shops were empty. Feeling slightly anxious about it all, but this time tomorrow it should die down xxx

TheHallmarkedMan · 24/01/2025 00:33

We're in west cork and it's wild here roght now. I hope everyone's inside.

User09678 · 24/01/2025 03:00

Greenbottle123 · 23/01/2025 20:32

What are you worried about?

Trees falling on my house, my fence blowing on to the road, something smashing my car, long periods without power

User09678 · 24/01/2025 04:03

I'm in the West of Scotland and the gusts have woken me, it's not even meant to have started yet
