My whole family forgot my birthday

Kind of light hearted but my brother, my parents and most importantly my DH have all forgotten to wish me happy birthday today. At time of writing it's 14.30.

Just to confirm my birthday is on the 22nd of January... I haven't got my dates mixed up and it's like the 21st today or something??

Also - any ideas on being petty? I feeling like letting them all know at this point needs something big so it doesn't look desperate for attention 🤣

My parents and sister forgot my 39th birthday. My sister was just being crap. Looking back it was just prior to my mum's dementia diagnosis. She was the one who kept track of birthdays, bought presents etc and obviously in the run up to diagnosis things started to slip without us knowing it was a symptom. How old is your mum op?

Unpaidviewer · 22/01/2025 16:30

Happy birthday!

My normally amazing DH forgot one year. He had a lot going on at the time. He felt terrible and did make it up to me in the years that followed.

Tbf my mother forgot my 18th 🙃 so the form is there...

Oh eek. That’s hard. If it makes you laugh, my mum met me from sixth form and took me for lunch on my 18th to one of the local pubs. She asked what I wanted to drink and before I could answer the barman said: “Vodka, lime and lemonade isn’t it?!” Thanks chum! Bearing in mind I was a right scaredy cat and had only started going to the pub a few months earlier (so very much on the cusp of 18!) because I started dating someone in the year above… amazed he even remembered me I only went there once or twice!

But you’re in London so many lovely choices for a really good dinner and some drinks at least. Go somewhere nice and maybe get your nails done or go to a blow dry bar beforehand to make it really special.

I feel like the voting needs to be split:

Your DH really should remember

All the others: personally I really don't care when/if they get round to saying happy birthday

I certainly wouldn't text my husband 'happy birthday' while hes at work, that so impersonal and cold, on that note I don't post it to his Facebook wall either like a 15 year old.

I'm going to see him after work and we would do proper celebratory stuff together in person.

A text is what you do for someone your not close too.

He’s in America and in a different time zone - I think a text is perfectly fine under those circumstances and hopefully a present ordered from afar and a phone call later if they can make the timings work.

I have Af and my dr dudnt give me a heart scan 'standard NHS procedure. He gave me the astra zeneca vaccine which made nexill and I had a stroke so no obe is surprised that I haven't done everything I usually do. Normally I buy birthday cards in January put dates on env and send them out in advance. I'm suing the NHS and my new drs sent me for a heart check and it's fine.

Mummyratbag · 22/01/2025 16:36

I know people say they don't care about birthdays, but in real life I don't know anyone who'd be happy with this. It takes virtually no effort to say Happy Birthday and very little expense to buy a card or your favourite sweets/treat. I'm so sorry that they seem to have collective amnesia. I hope you are able to treat yourself and have an enjoyable evening. Happy Birthday.

I never quite understand the birthday posts on MN.
Have you asked for any presents? Mentioned going out for a meal or doing something special for dinner?
If the answer is no and you were just waiting to see whether or not they remembered, then I feel you are partly to blame.

You don’t think parents should remember their DC’s birthdays??

Happy birthday! I'm sorry your family has been so rubbish - I hope that at least one of them remembers before the day is over.

I'm one of those people that's really good with remembering dates, so I struggle to see how other people don't remember the birthdays of people they supposedly care about. I suspect in this case it's more likely they haven't realised what the date is, rather than forgetting it's your birthday (eg they think it's the 21st Jan).

Enjoy yourself this evening!

Could you use AI to create (or photoshop yourself into) loads of photos of you having a fabulous time getting drunk at a (your) birthday party in a pub with a crowd of people your family don't know, including at least one very handsome man, post them on social media, and then wait for the text message from DH???

I may be over-estimating your skills at photoshop! 😆

Her husband is in Bahrain, 3 hours ahead. Her parents are in the US.

@Oopsadaisy92 Just wanted to say Happy Birthday to my birthday twin! It’s my 49th today. I hope you get some acknowledgment from your family later today

Bloozie · 22/01/2025 16:48

Happy birthday to you! Has anyone remembered yet?

I'd be really upset, not amused.

Apologies, texting while sorting out a tech issue and confused the two. Still think a text from Bahrain would be fine though!

The competitive unbothered on MN is hilarious.

Happy birthday. I don't understand how a mother could forget. I know the date a person came out of me!

Yes I know he’s more worried about the dog! My original response was in terms of the PP saying that a text wouldn’t be a suitable way to send a birthday wish and I don’t think that’s true, particularly where distance and time are a factor. I was referring to the principle of sending a text, not what has happened here.
