I put butter in the fridge, DH wants it on the counter. Who is right?

We don’t have a huge kitchen so it will always be at least 1 mt away from hob or window. Would a butter dish “protect” it enough from it? I have always assumed butter goes in the fridge but he says it doesn’t. What do others do?

Mine lives on the windowsill in a lovely dish and in the summer moves to the worktop.

dementedpixie · 21/01/2025 21:53

My butter isn't going off any time soon. It's still brick hard even left out on the worktop in its covered dish

Newbie8918 · 21/01/2025 21:54

@Tryingtokeepgoing and that's why I don't use the Anchor one or lurpack for that matter.

M&S and Lidl both do one with no added oils.

On the side it’s a pain to spread out of the fridge.

Unrulyrabbit · 21/01/2025 20:44

Cut it in half, put half in each place, both happy

This is the way, if you know how much you use every couple of days or so then get a container that will hold that amount and then cut up your block of butter to suit.

Marcipix · 21/01/2025 21:54

Buy yourself some for each.

I keep it in the fridge and it lasts us a while. But I do take out what I need beforehand and let it warm up.

Dairy UK say it should be stored in the fridge
"This is because butter kept at room temperature will go off within the space of a few days. So while your butter will be soft and spreadable, it won’t taste as good and it may not be safe to eat."
https://metro.co.uk/2017/04/13/its-official-butter-should-be-kept-in-the-fridge-6571917/

"The UK Food Standards Agency recommends refrigerating purely for the quality of the product, rather than safety reasons."
https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/food/a568234/where-to-store-butter/

US Dairy says unsalted butter should be refrigerated, salted butter is ok to leave on counter but consume within couple of days
https://www.usdairy.com/news-articles/does-butter-need-to-be-refrigerated#:~:text=If%20it%20creeps%20above%2070,for%20a%20day%20or%20two.

Canadian (British Columbia Dairy) say it's better to refrigerate but if on counter consume within few days.

None of these organisations know what they're talking about

People keep butter OUT of the fridge?

Every day is a school day.

I keep pretty much everything, eggs, butter, chocolate, ketchup, all in the fridge.

Newbie8918 · 21/01/2025 21:55

@IrisPallida agreed! I deliberately look for softer butter with no added oil as I can't bare it but some people are not having it 🤣

BIossomtoes · 21/01/2025 21:56

Butter dish on the bread board in the winter, in the fridge in the summer.

xanadu123 · 21/01/2025 21:59

@soupfiend The producers of butter don't know what they're talking about. Ok cool.

Drfosters · 21/01/2025 21:59

Completely depends if spreadable or not. We only use spreadable for convenience but I grew up with a butter dish on the surface. We don’t have anywhere to put one so it would be in the way.

cakewitch · 21/01/2025 22:01

Butter out on the kitchen top in our house.. In a butter dish. With the lid on it. Summer and winter. NOTHING bad has ever happened. Except we have nice soft butter.

Crispynoodle · 21/01/2025 22:01

Butter dish! I live in Northern Ireland though and so it rarely melts in the heat!

whaddayawannado · 21/01/2025 22:02

This time of year ours lives in a lidded butter dish in the cupboard with the salt & pepper, condiments and whatnot. During the summer when (if) it's hot, we just put a small lump in the dish and keep the rest of it in the fridge.

ERthree · 21/01/2025 22:03

You don't have to use the whole block in one go, one half in the butter dish on the side, the other half in the fridge to use later. In the summer i cut the block into 3.

ManchesterLu · 21/01/2025 22:07

Just have 2 butters on the go, so everyone's happy. It's not like it won't get used.

weirdoboelady · 21/01/2025 22:07

The perfect solution is a beurrier, or French butter dish. It's oxygen which makes butter go off, and the beurrier solves this by sealing the butter in water. Try Caractacus Pots on Etsy. Full disclaimer - these particular ones are made by a friend, but she doesn't know I'm posting!

MillyVannily · 21/01/2025 22:09

Fridge.

Obimumkinobi · 21/01/2025 22:12

Ponderingwindow · 21/01/2025 20:56

We keep some in both.

if it is warm and you are nervous, you can use a butter bell, but honestly I have never had a problem just in a covered dish.

Definitely try a butter bell. Have them on Amazon.

Phthia · 21/01/2025 22:13

Lallybroch · 21/01/2025 20:48

Definitely not in the fridge unless it is the middle of summer BUT, I don't like the idea of it sitting on the work top, so my butter dish lives in the microwave until either the butter or the microwave is needed. That way I don't get the ick feeling.

I don't see how it can be ick if it's covered up in a butter dish? Do you feel ick about stuff like, say, bread or fruit if you don't leave it in the fridge?

Lovelybitofsquirrel3 · 21/01/2025 22:13

I didn’t know this about butter

Mayonnaise is stable at room temperature, even once it’s opened. Ketchup on the other hand very definitely needs to be refrigerated after opening, it used to have loads of preservatives added but not anymore.

Mayo definitely should be stored in the fridge once opened…ketchup and mustard fine in the cupboard.

Is putting it on the counter an English thing because I’m Scottish and I don’t know anybody keeping it on the counter.

I live in Scotland. Although, I am Irish. Dp is Scottish though. Our butter lives in a dish on the counter.

user1496146479 · 21/01/2025 22:16

Real butter never in the fridge in this house
