To spend £70 on a pillow?

I'm a side sleeper and often wake up with tension headaches that can turn into severe migraines that make me sick if I sleep a bit weird. My pillow isn't great, however my neck seems to be used to it for the most part because if I happen to stay over in a hotel and use a different pillow to mine I almost always wake up with a tension headache.

I'm looking for a new pillow with better support, it still soft and squishy. Something not too high or too flat that will retain its fluff and that's not memory foam.

I've come across these "double pillows" from Aeyla (hadn't heard of the brand before). They claim to have a more supportive inner core pillow with a fluffy outer pillow type cover around it that makes up the overall pillow. Has anyone used these before?

AIBU (or crazy?) to spend £70 on a single pillow? If it helps me to get a good night sleep and prevents tension headaches then I guess I'd be ok with spending that. However are there similar (or better pillow) options at a lower price?

Seventy pounds is not a lot for something you'll use for a third of your life.

I'm not especially fussy about pillows but happily spent a few thousand on the best mattress we could find. If I'm going to lie on it for 8 or more hours a night it's got to be amazing.

usernother · 21/01/2025 20:32

I've bought 2 pillows at £100 each and they were worth every penny. They were the firmest pillows I could find. I love them. I hate soft or medium pillows. I bought them with gift vouchers I'd received as presents.

Yep spend the money, it will be worth it.

Velmy · 21/01/2025 20:47

I've just spent 120 on one 😬😬😬

ObsidianTree · 21/01/2025 20:51

I've come on to also recommend dunlopillo. I heard about them from Mumsnet. I bought one nearly 7 years ago and is still going strong. I had to get my husband one too as he kept nicking mine. Best investment for sure.

We bought king-size memory foam ones when we got our new bed, they were more than that and very comfortable. We had a thirty day money back guarantee and we kept them, so compfy

I am a side sleeper that had neck pain until I got my Tempur Symphony pillow, best £70 I ever spent. I see that they are now £109 with a 30 day return guarantee, so could be worth a try.

I have this very pillow, for the same reasons as you. I have spent a fortune on pillows over the years, and every night I'd have to rearrange them to be exactly the right comfort level.
Then I bought this pillow. I've never looked back, I take it every where with me ( except abroad) and I've said the only way I'll ever part with it is by someone taking it from my old dead hands.

It's absolutely worth every penny, I've had mine over a year now and it's over a year since I bought any new pillows!
If you can afford it, do it, I promise you won't regret it.

Panda bamboo pillow. Game changer

Marisislikethesunwithoutthewarmth · 21/01/2025 21:31

go for it…. Just remember not to let a DH let a poorly kid sleep on it when they are ill and cover it in vomit. At which point you realise the pillow is not machine washable and is ruined after only just having had it for two weeks 😅 This was the fate of a lovely Simba pillow I had.

lowlight · 21/01/2025 21:37

£70 is not much for a good pillow however would be good to try it first

RikkiVictorious · 21/01/2025 21:42

We bought these from John Lewis. I was always a 2 pillow user but only use this one and haven't had neck pain since. £50 each but money well spent in my opinion.

I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think? https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-specialist-support-memory-foam-standard-pillow-firm/p110249046?tmad=c&tmcampid=7&sshare=jlappioss_Y29tLmFwcGxlLlVJS2l0LmFjdGl2aXR5LkNvcHlUb1Bhc3RlYm9hcmQ=

Yes, definitely. Good nights sleep is priceless (or at least worth £70)

martinisforeveryone · 21/01/2025 21:46

I spent £110 each on two pillows from And So To Bed, must've been in 2010. They were 3' wide ones though and they lasted a decade. I was really pleased with them. There's still nothing wrong with them, I just got fed up of having them cleaned.

Now I have much cheaper ones from Martian Dreams. These are bamboo cases with zips and a hollowfibre filling.

The customer service is absolutely excellent and they have sent me additional filling for no extra cost so I could customise the firmness. I ordered extra for other beds.

Super king size were £50 for two via Amazon and am equally happy with them. Have also gifted some to family, and they are pleased too.

Dunlopillos are not as good as they were! I have one which is 10 years old, feels great and looks amazing still but also have a 5 year old one which has disintegrated and a 1 year old that's so hard (described as medium support) that it's like sleeping on rocks! It's used for sitting up in bed reading..... We have Cooltex Talalay Latex Foam pillows (the low profile ones) and they are fantastic - an excellent replacement for the now dreadful Dunlopillos.

I’ve just bought some Brightr pillows. They were 2 for 1 so £70 for the two. DH really struggles with his neck and loves it. It’s the first pillow he’s found works.

We’ve just bought the same. Me and husband were struggling with our necks in the morning - three weeks in and all my upper body pain is gone. Absolute insanity but worth every penny.

ThoroughlyModernNotMillie · 21/01/2025 21:49

As pp have said, a Dunlopillo latex pillow is absolutely wonderful. I bought mine about 5 years ago, it cost about 80 then, but worth every penny. It's a natural material, never needs plumping, doesn't go flat, and isn't at all sweaty. It has a removable washable cover, and I use a pillow protector and another pillowcase under the top one, so it stays clean, I would never buy any other type of pillow.
If I'm going away anywhere in this country overnight I take it with me so I know I'll sleep well, I love it that much.

Interesting-I still have my Dunlopillo from when I was at university and we have gradually replaced all of our other inferior ones with Dunlopillo (or Relyon) over the last 10 years and they are all pretty much the same-nothing has disintegrated or is hard. We love them.

MissPobjoysPonies · 21/01/2025 21:55

Wonderful nights sleep for the next few year (if it is comfortable for you) at £70 or a night out with OH and drinks, a train ticket, a jumper or a dress.

it seems like a lot but I would absolutely do it and have my eye on a goose down one for £100. Absolutely I’d do it.

poppym12 · 21/01/2025 22:01

I've got a Tempur cloud pillow. I've had it a few years and it was about £80 then. It's so worth it. It hasn't prevented migraines but it's got rid of a lot of neck and shoulder pain.

User67556 · 21/01/2025 18:30

Get a dunlopillo! Now known as Relyon.

This!

Tubbyinthehottub · 21/01/2025 22:05

I've got that Aeyla pillow, I like it. I've had it two years now and it's still good. My husband bought a Tempur for, I think, £90 and it was rock hard. I used to joke about him sleeping on a pallet. He got rid of it.

Jollyjoy · 21/01/2025 22:12

I've got a Levitex one as well, I think was £75. It's changed my life and loved it so much I bought one of their mattresses. Largely has removed my back pain and I rarely snore now which I used to. Anyway I think others have made the case that a good pillow is definitely worth paying for!

Marine30 · 21/01/2025 22:16

We bought 4 Tempur pillows for us and kids and they were a very good investment. Third of your life asleep and all that.
When we go on U.K. holidays the kids actually take them with us.

LovelyDaaling · 21/01/2025 22:29

If it gives you a good night's sleep , a £70 pillow is worth more than a £70 handbag or dress or meal out any day.
