To spend £70 on a pillow?

I'm a side sleeper and often wake up with tension headaches that can turn into severe migraines that make me sick if I sleep a bit weird. My pillow isn't great, however my neck seems to be used to it for the most part because if I happen to stay over in a hotel and use a different pillow to mine I almost always wake up with a tension headache.

I'm looking for a new pillow with better support, it still soft and squishy. Something not too high or too flat that will retain its fluff and that's not memory foam.

I've come across these "double pillows" from Aeyla (hadn't heard of the brand before). They claim to have a more supportive inner core pillow with a fluffy outer pillow type cover around it that makes up the overall pillow. Has anyone used these before?

AIBU (or crazy?) to spend £70 on a single pillow? If it helps me to get a good night sleep and prevents tension headaches then I guess I'd be ok with spending that. However are there similar (or better pillow) options at a lower price?

That's a serious amout of money to spend a pillow....it might be better to spend it on seeing a good osteopath?

devastatedagain · 21/01/2025 18:13

I've always spent good money like £70 on pillows.

We're on them for 8 hours a night, we deserve the best. I'd spend that on a dress to wear half a dozen times so why not on a pillow to use 1000 times?

Ineffable23 · 21/01/2025 18:14

I've not gone across that brand, but personally I go for an inexpensive thin, old pillow made with synthetic fibres, and then on top of that I use a feather pillow. I think I got my feather pillow from the white company when they had a sale on.

It's the best compromise of holding my neck at the right height that I've found.

MumChp · 21/01/2025 18:15

I would do it if it works for you.

Iamthewintersale · 21/01/2025 18:16

It sounds like it’s probably worth the money - do they have a refund guarantee??

I've seen osteopaths, chiropractors, massage therapists and had acupuncture. All just very short term relief. No long term results. Although they're all relaxing, I can't afford to spend £50-£80 per appointment a few times a month.

I have one with a latex core and it was substantially more than £70. Worth it (I have the same issues as you op, and it would ruin my life every day if I was in pain, I still sometimes do get pain due to sleeping funny)

Isn't there an old saying, don't scrimp on mattresses, tyres, brakes, sunscreen and shoes? I'd add pillows to that.

purplecorkheart · 21/01/2025 18:18

I did. I bought it from a physio therapist but she had one in her clinic you could try out.

You make a perfectly sensible point here! So much so that you've probably given me the push to splurge on a decent pillow. Will have to decide it the one I shared is "the one".

Would love to hear from anyone that's tried it before...

As a chronic migraineur, it was never the pillow... The years of neck pain was just an early symptom of the migraine.

Botox made a big difference though, especially into the neck and shoulders. Then Ajovy, now Aimovig. That has got the neck pain sorted!

I have spent a fortune on pillows and mattresses.... None of them worked.

They do have a 30 day money back guarentee. I'm a little weary of the T&C's that come with these though because some companies make it very difficult for customers to actually return the item. I'll look into their refund policy

I spent £100 on a cloud tempur pillow - best decision ever! Go for it, sleep is important.

I've also considered getting Botox, but have put it off for now since I'd rather spend the money on Botox getting rid of my forehead lines and I couldn’t afford both areas.

Yes, I'm that vain that I'd rather suffer the tension headaches a few times a month and pop a handful of neurofen each time so I can be wrinkle free Blush

We spent around £100 on temper cloud pillows. About 15 years ago!
Worth every penny. They have thick outside protectors and we use another pillow protector so you can wash the covers as needed. They both look as new.
i was tempted to buy the newer versions but seems a waste when these are still great and clean

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 21/01/2025 18:29

I’ve just bought some Brightr pillows. They were 2 for 1 so £70 for the two. DH really struggles with his neck and loves it. It’s the first pillow he’s found works.

Get a dunlopillo! Now known as Relyon.

thekingfisher · 21/01/2025 18:31

I am very precious when it comes to my pillows. I have a combo now which I am very happy with which is one of these shop.kitkemp.com/products/pillows-king?variant=49141927969051
Which I slept on when stayed at one of the firmdale hotels and then also one of these www.secretlinenstore.com/products/dreamy-duck-pillow-european-duck-feather-and-down

I sleep on the secret linen store one and the other is my 'support' pillow. Bliss

Thesonofaphesantplucker · 21/01/2025 18:32

Yes I was also coming in to say Dunlopillo. Mine was £90 ten years ago. It is AMAZING. (Although I should say, it’s heavy and on first glance it couldn’t seem comfy but as soon as you lie in it, it’s heaven!)

pinkwaffles · 21/01/2025 18:40

I spent £50 on a pillow a about 2 years ago.

My partner has some regular pillows from M&S.

They are now exactly the same and we can't tell the difference.

I think a lot of this is just very good marketing.

bridgetreilly · 21/01/2025 18:55

A couple of years ago I invested in a wool duvet and pillows. They are amazing. Comfortable and soft but also supportive. Two years in they are like new. Highly recommended.

Completelyjo · 21/01/2025 18:55

My top pillows are around £100 I couldn’t use anything else!

Spend £90 and get a Dunlopillo (Relyon)! They are seriously the best pillows in the world-last forever.

roibustea · 21/01/2025 19:02

I've spent a lot on pillows; I had a Tempur for about £100, then a latex one for similar, and now settled on a goose down which I think was over £200 full price (if I remember correctly, I got it for about £150). I consider it worth it, I don't think bedding is a place to skimp as how you sleep has such an impact on your whole life.
