What food from Waitrose do I need to try?

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 21/01/2025 00:00

I've never shopped at waitrose, apart from popping in for an emergency water bottle, kind of thing. I'm an Asda/Lidl budget shopper 🤭

I've got a voucher to use there for an online shop, £15 off of an £80 shop.

So which food would you recommend i buy? Which food tastes amazing and is a must try? I'm thinking of venison, never had that

Is the pasta superior? Any seasonings?

Do share x

Frozen bakery stuff like breakfast pastries

I solved this after seeing the tins out the back of the local (amazing and genuinely neopolitan) pizza place… The brand is called Mutti. They’re not cheap but they’re often on offer on Ocado for £1 per tin. Waitrose probably have them!

£1 a tin 😩

But judging by the reviews on the Asda site, they're worth it, so im gonna have to try it out! My usual just essential ones are watery 😒

They do a lovely steak and ale pie, frozen. Usually cook pies home made as the shop ones are not great but this one is.

I did have a lovely steak pie from lidl the other day - £4 - usually way out of my budget but I got it for free and it tasted amazing! That's what's solidified my decision tbh, I've been eating terribly my whole life 🙃

I second Mutti tinned tomatoes/purée. They are expensive but regularly on offer. Like dishwasher tablets, I stock up on loads them when they are offer so I never have to pay full price 😂

If you are looking to try something different when it comes to wine, Waitrose vinho verde (green wine) is good (£6.99), although the more expensive Quinta Azevedo is even nicer. It’s more of a light, crisp, refreshing summer drink with a very slight fizz but I love it with light food all year round.

I am slightly embarrassed that my recommendations are all tomatoes and wine 😂 I am fussy about tomatoes as I am spoilt by homegrown ones and my DF is a master vintner so I know a wine bargain or two. 😂

Omg do not be embarrassed 😄, this is the info i need in my life

Waitrose brand biscuits are lovely especially the short bread
Ice cream (my favourite is the No1 Columbian coffee)
own brand coffee bags and tea bags
mayonnaise and salad cream
chutney
montagnolo cheese and Brie from the counter
their vine cherry tomatoes actually taste of tomatoes
all fruit and vegetables last better than other supermarkets
their extra large whole chicken are excellent value and no water pumped in
I stay away from the bakery counter as it’s far too tempting but DS is an iced bun fiend and loves the ones from Waitrose.

You should see me speed past the lidl bakery section. Can't let myself loose there for a second!

That said, this basket is full of stuff from the bakery 🙃🤭

No1 Brillat Savarin Affine cheese. I had this in Paris recently and it was the best cheese I’ve ever tasted, was so happy to google and find it in Waitrose!

Their own brand tinned sardines with lemon.

Obsessed with all things paris, ringarde woman that i am

These ones. I use them for makeup but found the texture to be decent.

Thank you 😊

@mumofoneAlonebutokay
and everyone else there is 25% off Waitrose No1 wine at the moment.

All the waitrose wine I have tasted has been excellent - particularly the No.1 range. I would definitely recommend looking at that.
My personal favourites (that I drank at Christmas) are - Sauvignon Blanc, Chablis, Cava, Malbec & Rioja

Okay on it 🤭

Im desperate to try this orange wine as everyone's talking about it but will temper my hopes

I just had a very useful email from Waitrose telling me there will be 20% off items at the cheese counter every Thursday. Great, except they've just closed our deli counter!

@mumofoneAlonebutokay

Just on the orange wine, I have tried it a couple of times when I have been out - one was at a good wine bar / shop that I go to regularly.

Both times I really didn't enjoy it - very tangy, almost vinegary. It definitely has a sharpness to it.

Much like all wine - just because the ones you have tried are like that to you, they won't all be! If you don't like the tangy-ness (tannins), try a lighter grape. Orange wine is wine that has been left 'on the skins' during production, and the tangy-ness you're getting are tannins that come from the skin of the grapes.

Austrian skin contacts are usually lower in acidity, more complex and fun.

Wakeywake · 22/01/2025 16:22

Bakery bread, in particular the sourdough
No1 coffee ice-cream
Duchy organic burgers (although they used to be much better value, not worth the price anymore)
Cheese - goats cheese, Reblochon, burrata and buffalo mozzarella are my favourites
Some deserts - raspberry tart, salted caramel and chocolate tart, basically I liked everything I've tried from their No1 range
Sweet Kingdom carrots are so tasty
Frozen pastries
The meat is good, just not sure it's all that much better than other supermarkets for the price difference

In that case, this is a lovely selection of French cheeses but it’s probably better value and a safer bet to go to the cheese counter, try some samples and buy your favourites. They have some amazing cheese biscuits called Drinks Biscuits by The Drinks Bakery on the cheese counter at my local Waitrose (especially the Lancashire cheese and spring onion). You will need something to nibble on with the orange wine 😂

Sorry to disappoint you but there’s nothing ‘must-try’ or amazing at Waitrose. I shop there occasionally if I want a nice cut of meat, but everything else is much the same as at Tesco or Sainsbury, in terms of range and type of products. It is definitely the most expensive supermarket. I’d suggest just use your voucher to do a standard shop.

i find their ready meals very disappointing, nowhere near as good as M&S.

malificent7 · 22/01/2025 17:35

The crab pate is delicious!

Whyherewego · 22/01/2025 18:03

Mutti tins of tomatoes are so good you can eke them out a bit with water! I know that sounds bonkers but I still think that's better than watery tins of tomatoes if you know what I mean

RedRiverShore5 · 22/01/2025 18:03

The double cream Brie on the cheese counter is nice

I think i'll have to go there and try it out as well - I'll go there first and then do my proper online shop, so I can see what I'm getting

I want to try the meat because this steak i bought from lidl literally just made me throw up!

The steak kind of swelled? As I was cooking it? It was both chewy and practically raw, it's gone in the bin

Currently eating a kit kat to recover 🤭

The coffee shortbread has sold out and I'm blaming this thread. I was going to add some for my lovely mum.

I live on their red pepper hummus. It's the best I've had and not ultra processed like most. Unless you count lemon juice concentrate which I don't because it's not a large amount.

The Colombian coffee ice cream is good my mum says.

I use their Gold tea bags, weetabix, organic baked beans, breads, muffins (toasted, although now make my own). Their fruit is much better than Asda which is my closest supermarket although their clementines have been rubbish lately. The chilli cheddar is lovely. The veggie crispbakes. I bake a lot and use their essentials range for butter and flours. I use their bread flour for bread, pizza, muffins .

The offers are often good and their prices on basics are often cheaper than Asda. Kerrygold is usually cheaper at Waitrose.

Just goes to show the difference in personal taste as most of the post completely disagree with you

Hopefully, your local branch is good! TBF, there does seem to be a lot of variation as they are often smaller than some of the other supermarket chains and seem to tailor what they stock to local demand. My local one is amazing with a fresh sushi counter, fishmonger, butcher, bakery cheese counter and deli. The slightly smaller one 10 minutes away is a bit meh in comparison. The Little Waitrose convenience store is a waste of space with mouldy fruit and veg! The food hall in the nearby John Lewis is the best of the bunch for wine and floristry, they have a climate controlled cheese room 😂 and a fancier deli counter and have preprepared fresh food but not much every day stuff. The branch closest to DS has an amazing range of garden plants but doesn’t have all the fresh counters or as much choice as my local branch, even though it’s bigger 🤷‍♀️

If your branch has a butcher and cheese counter, as well as having some different items that they don’t sell prepackaged and being able to buy exactly the amount you need, they are often cheaper per kg than the same products prepackaged.

https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/no1-dark-chocolate-ginger-florentines/618649-828415-828416

Plus the other two sorts of Florentine biscuits in the same range. But the dark choc'n'ginger are the best....

and the staff are more sullen

I have found the staff in Lidl really sullen to the point of being downright rude.
The staff in Waitrose will actually show me where things are.

Essential sausages - really good, particularly the chipolatas. Small beef meatballs, perfect with pasta and sauce. There's a pizza - garlic, mushrooms and spinach that I could eat every week.
