To be annoyed at the lack of bathrooms

Applecharm25 · 20/01/2025 13:39

I have my period. I can feel that i need to change my tampon.

I'm out walking round my city. There are no public bathrooms anywhere near me.

I see a sign for a bathroom in a small shopping centre near me. I walk in. The bathroom is actually in a shop. I'm told that the bathroom is only available for paying customers.

So now I have to get in a long queue and wait further and buy something while I really need to change my tampon.

Surely there should be better toilet services available.

Well I was confused. I thought the thread is about bathrooms in a house. As in, there aren't enough baths or showers where you were staying.

It's only when I read the actual post that I realised the OP is likely American and meant public toilets.

Already answered.

I'm not American.

People in the UK say bathrooms. You only live in one area of the UK. You don't know what people say in other areas.

Why do so many threads on mumsnet go like this, where people argue for the whole thread over the use of a word.

People are oddly argumentative on this thread. Maybe try chat next time, OP. I knew you meant toilet by bathroom.

mitogoshigg · 20/01/2025 15:25

At first I was sympathetic to ops plight, it's harder in small towns, but then they said they didn't need a loo, they needed to change their tampon ... I've never in over 40 years not used the toilet when changing sanpro!

Never seen a sign saying bathroom either, it's toilets, loos, wc or restroom even not bathroom

WongKarWhy · 20/01/2025 15:24

This is what I was thinking, but didn't want to say. OP doesn't sound like a woman at all!

Getting angry when a bunch of women don't agree with 'her' you mean?

Hmmm, valid point.

Yes, just the general tone, and lack of understanding about what we are saying. Also, the whole not understanding biology thing "she" keeps trotting out. All seems a bit off to me.

MorrisZapp · 20/01/2025 15:28

Please describe what you'd like a period changing room to have in it?

Agree.

And the huge amount of focus on "changing a tampon", rather than just needing to use the loo. Weird.

@WestwardHo1 @WhereYouLeftIt @WongKarWhy

Agree with you all and was thinking it from the first post. Most women just get on with it. The weird intense focus on female biology and excessive use of "needing to change a tampon" makes me think it's someone who is not experienced in being a woman...

Mymanyellow · 20/01/2025 15:34

Well I’m old so don’t have to worry about changing a tampon. But I don’t think I’ve ever changed one without weeing at the same time.
In a lavatory actually 😀

Proudtobeanortherner · 20/01/2025 15:34

Applecharm25 · 20/01/2025 13:52

No I'm in the UK.

What do you mean "bathroom" is not common. Everyone I know, says bathroom.

A woman even walked in after me, and asked where the bathroom is.

I’m not sure how old you are but I suspect that too much American television could be the culprit. In the UK a toilet is used to pee and a bathroom is used to bathe. You may be able to pee in a bathroom but you can’t bathe in toilet!

heyhopotato · 20/01/2025 15:34

I live in a UK city and every shopping centre has toilets. Is it maybe an arcade rather than a shopping centre you went to?

Public bathrooms are nasty, and especially in cities, are rife with drug problems, so no I don't want my council tax wasted on them.

Train stations also have toilets, as do libraries, women's centres, and designated "warm space" buildings. Bus stations also sometimes do.

But I typically plan ahead far enough or am also going to a restaurant when I'm out in the city centre.

Because people generally argue back ( much like what you are doing) instead of ignoring

LBFseBrom · 20/01/2025 15:35

For future reference, McDonalds will always let anyone use their toilets. Supermarkets like Sainsbury's always have toilets, so does M&S. I hope you are OK now.

Wow.

Some people have an extremely bad grasp of biology.

What age are you.

You don't need to go for a wee when you change a tampon. They are different things.

They are not connected.

Tampons are designed that you can wee when tampons are inserted.

Do you really not know this?

Yeah it was an arcade like a small shopping centre.

I find it strange that, despite this being an international forum, and not even hosted on a .co.uk domain, people on here get so very upset and uptight if someone uses a 'non-English' term like bathroom. FFS everyone, what does it matter what term a person uses? Get over it! Stop bullying the OP!
That said, I don't know how you can remove a tampon without sitting on the toilet because you do get blood splatter/drips coming out. And you're right, the lack of public toilets where you are is shameful. In my country one of the number one health and sanitation requirements of local councils is to provide public toilets. Shopping centres, railway stations, parks all have public toilets. It would be unheard of them not to. In the case where I was closer to a pub or mcdonalds, I just went in there. No one knows you're not a customer.

NO ONE SAID YOU DO.

Many of us said we would always try to/ some women find they do need to for various BIOLOGICAL reasons.

I'm pretty sure you don't need to change a tampon ever...

No they won't - I have been into at least one McDonald this year where you needed a code from the bottom of your receipt before you could access the toilet.

Yeah but when you're sitting on the toilet, most women have a pee while they're sitting on the toilet, nickers down. Don't know any woman that doesn't. Even if you're not busting, its customary to do pee. You're sitting on the toilet anyway.

Yeah you definitely need to pay for something - to use the mcdonalds toilet, in the one near me

Maybe think about this before you leave the house? I assume this is a walk into a small town from home as there are no public loos, so maybe you should have changed your tampon as a precaution before you left home. You must have been aware there were no public loos?

I think you're a man. That's what.

I also think you're misrepresenting what posters have said, and then berating them for saying it.

Many women have very heavy periods and need to change tampons often.

Especially on heavy days

I'm not a man wongkarwhy . Maybe you're a man - and that's why you said that. As it's such an odd thing to say!
