To be annoyed at the lack of bathrooms

Applecharm25 · 20/01/2025 13:39

I have my period. I can feel that i need to change my tampon.

I'm out walking round my city. There are no public bathrooms anywhere near me.

I see a sign for a bathroom in a small shopping centre near me. I walk in. The bathroom is actually in a shop. I'm told that the bathroom is only available for paying customers.

So now I have to get in a long queue and wait further and buy something while I really need to change my tampon.

Surely there should be better toilet services available.

No I'm in the UK.

What do you mean "bathroom" is not common. Everyone I know, says bathroom.

A woman even walked in after me, and asked where the bathroom is.

Nobody English calls a pub toilet a bathroom.

OhFuckATruck · 20/01/2025 15:14

I'm sitting over it though, tmi alert but my periods are really heavy and there's no way I would be able to change a tampon stood up without getting blood all over my clothes. Yeah I may not be pissing or shitting when I change my san pro but I'm sat over the toilet to catch the blood. Isn't that what most people do?

No. I change mine standing up .

Another poster on here has also said that she changes hers standing up.

People do it in different ways

Really. I've said I didn't need to wee multiple times.

And she keeps saying to me "why didn't you wee, why didn't you wee".

Like what the actual fuck is wrong with some people

I mean she doesn't say that.

She's just pointing out most women do try for a wee at the same time because it's sensible when there are so few toilets.

I'm starting to think yu aren't being serious about any of this though. You're being very odd.

TeenLifeMum · 20/01/2025 15:17

So there’s no M&S, Wetherspoons, Costa, McDonald’s etc?

Public toilets were gross and used minimally as they couldn’t justify cleaning costs. There’s so many options where they offer toilets, I’m surprised there’s a city without a Costa or McDonald’s.

I'm English and I do.

Do you live in the whole of England then?

I definitely do and someone also has to empty the sanitary bins you put the used tampons in.

It doenst matter if the bladder relaxes, if you haven't drunk enough in the previous hour, to need to pee, does it.

Anatomy 101.

Your tampon could be filled up.

But you might not even have drank any liquid that morning

You will need to change your tampon.

You won't need to pee.

Do you not wipe when you've removed a tampon? Surely it usually goes "tampon out, wipe, new tampon in"? thus using the toilet, even with no urine involved.

Do people really change a full tampon with no wiping? I can't say it's something I've ever discussed or thought about before 😂

I have never seen someone so gaslit on such an innocuous thread. OP i think theyre all trying to wind you up.

Noone has said "why didn't you wee".

If you're so keen on changing your tampon without going in a loo, just ask in a shop if you can pop into their storeroom. By your logic that should be fine.

OP @Applecharm25 - According to your other posts, you were in Pompeii last week (whinging about not liking the history of the place) and then said you were going to Florence in a few days???

So out of curiosity, where exactly are you now with it's lack of public toilets?

She can only speak for herself.

I’ve occasionally gone into a public loo cubicle to find drops of blood on the floor. No doubt left by people who change their tampon standing up. This would not happen if one was sitting on the loo.

Like you had any sympathy to start with.

Are you going to shoot me cuz I didn't need to pee?

Some people on here are deranged.

Are you really unaware of the difference between needing to wee and trying to wee to pre-empt a future need? How odd.

It took a while but I did manage to get my children to grasp the concept by about age 5.

Applecharm25 · 20/01/2025 15:19

I agree!

It's definitely been extreme.

Thank you .

I just think they should have more services for women on their period too.

Seeing as I'm not actually going to use the toilet. They should have tampon changing rooms for women.

At least one in a town.

Of course that won't happen as periods don't happen to men!

Tampon changing rooms? 😂😂😂😂😂

I don't know anyone who would call a toilet a bathroom. Everyone I ever meet calls it a toilet, lavatory, loo, or cludgie.

WhisperingTree · 20/01/2025 15:21

Well I was confused. I thought the thread is about bathrooms in a house. As in, there aren't enough baths or showers where you were staying.

It's only when I read the actual post that I realised the OP is likely American and meant public toilets.

Personally I don't see how it's possible to change ones tampon without some kind of receptacle to hover over and catch any drips e.g. a toilet

(You should try a mooncup OP. Then you really would have an issue.)

Seriously though, local authorities unfortunately have no statutory obligation to fund public toilet facilities. This is why so many of them have either been closing down, or they have been offloading them to town councils to manage, who in tun are finding they can't afford to do so without charging users. They then find that administering the charge is costing more than it brings in, and the toilet closes. It's a shocking state of affairs. Blame George Osborne.

Some towns have got their act together and produced info about which businesses are willing to let people use their loos, in the same way they let us know if a place allows you to refill your water bottles for free, to try and cut down on plastic waste. It's generally considered nice if you chuck that business a bit of trade for the privilege.

OhFuckATruck · 20/01/2025 15:23

BIossomtoes · 20/01/2025 14:30

You have to pay to use the toilet in Costa

Not here you don’t. There are two Costas - both free. I don’t imagine they have different policies.

To be fair, I've been in some that do have different policies, the Costa in the big town gives you code to the toilets on the bottom of the receipt after purchase where's the branch in the small town I live doesn't and you can just walk in.

You seem very angry about everyone's responses. The majority of women on this thread agree that it's pretty common to find being in an actual toilet practical when changing a tampon for a variety of reasons but your response is to snap at them about not understanding biology.

You may feel the responses have been 'extreme' but you have been very defensive from the off about anyone disagreeing with you and that tends to escalate things.

WhereYouLeftIt · 20/01/2025 15:23

Hmm. New poster (been posting for just two days) starts a thread, takes a combative stance, prompting women to discuss tampons, periods, going to the toilet.

Note, I said "women", not "other women". I'm not saying "man" either. Possibly fetishist though.

housemaus · 20/01/2025 15:24

I've never in my life been asked to pay for something in a Costa, McDonalds, Starbucks, etc if I needed to nip in (which I do regularly because I've got a bladder the size of a thimble).

This is what I was thinking, but didn't want to say. OP doesn't sound like a woman at all!
