To be annoyed at the lack of bathrooms

Applecharm25 · 20/01/2025 13:39

I have my period. I can feel that i need to change my tampon.

I'm out walking round my city. There are no public bathrooms anywhere near me.

I see a sign for a bathroom in a small shopping centre near me. I walk in. The bathroom is actually in a shop. I'm told that the bathroom is only available for paying customers.

So now I have to get in a long queue and wait further and buy something while I really need to change my tampon.

Surely there should be better toilet services available.

This is a bugbear of mine too OP. Was amazed in Hong Kong at how there are toilets everywhere. I can’t believe the Liz Line has barely any loos and it’s a brand new facility. I have chronic cystitis and more
than one have wet myself on train platforms or had to just wee behind a bin because of lack of facilities. Actively discriminates against women imo.

Edited

Yeah we absolutely need more public bathrooms. I mean there's definitely not enough.

Where would they be in Hong Kong?
Were they in shopping centres?

Right but you haven't been everywhere.

And people say different things in every place.

I shall say bathroom forever! You're welcome to call it whatever you want.

No one can have been everywhere, it’s just impossible.
But you just go on believing that toilets, loos and ladies are called bathrooms and in your world you will be ok! Your call…..Good luck!!!

Blinky21 · 20/01/2025 22:49

You've got Tory cuts on councils to thank for this

Everywhere. All shipping centres, every train platform, in the street. Just whenever you need a bathroom one is there.

Suit a small number of women for a few days a month? All Women have their period at different times of the month.

So on any one day there will be loads of women on their periods going in to use public toilets.

It might not suit you. I personally would like the option. I feel it would be easier

Oh dear. I thought it was obvious but apparently not...

Using the UK averages, yes
I know there will be individuals outside these rough approximations, let's say the average woman starts her period at 12 and her periods last 5 days. She enters menopause at 52 (the average is actually 51 but I'm giving you an extra year to make my maths easier) and dies at 82. That's 60 days a year for 40 years = 2,400 days she might need to use your period cabin, out of a life of 82×365 + 82/4 = 29,950 days, or about 8% of her life. So your period cabin is potentially useful to the average women 8% of the days of her life, or a little less if she has pregnancies.

On the other hand, assuming she doesn't end up bedridden, once she's toilet trained by say 4 years old and barring the odd wild wee she's going to use a loo for a pee every day for the rest of her life which is 78*365 + 78/4 = 28,489 days, which means an actual ladies loo is potentially useful to her about 95% of the days of her life.

Multiply that up by the general population of women and yes, your period cabins will be used every day, but by far fewer women than would benefit if they were actually just ladies loos.

So even for women who would find it useful, it's still only useful a very small fraction of their time, and much less useful than just adding more toilets.

Exactly, very good argument for more female toilets

But you're not using the loo, when you change a tampon....

Well this is getting weird. You mean you don’t wee when you change your tampon? I’m pretty sure I do, every single time.

I'm sure at some stage in my life I might have done.

But no the last three times I changed my tampon, I didn't wee. I didn't need to.

Sure you can wee with a tampon in.

Your tampon isn't often going to be full at the exact Same time that your bladder is full.

DappledThings · 20/01/2025 23:00

I wouldn't use your proposed sanitary changing pod or whatever it is. If it's for pads as well shall we call it that, the Pad Pod? Has a ring to it. You can have that for free when you try to market it because I'm entirely confident it's not going to be any success.

I wouldn't use it. If I need to use the loo and I'm on my period I'll likely change a tampon at the same time to be efficient. Conversely, as has been said so many times, if I'm changing a tampon I'll have a wee too. Why anyone wouldn't take the opportunity to do both and pre-empt a second need to find a toilet soon after is beyond me.

MoonWoman69 · 20/01/2025 23:01

All you ever had to say in your original post was "AIBU that there is a lack of toilets in some places in the UK?". How hard was that to do? But no, all we've had is a series of rambling posts like you're the only one that's ever had periods! We really really didn't need to know all that! And I'd say that roughly 90% of the comments are people actually disagreeing with you! Which then led to you becoming quite a lot stranger and more confrontational! Completely batshit!

"Why anyone wouldn't take the opportunity to do both".

People can't just wee on command. You don't always need to wee. So if you don't need to go, how would you?

Eg. I bring my elderly mother into hospital a good bit. The nurse will ask my mum for a sample of urine and my mum will tell the nurse that she's not ready to pee yet. That she can't go. She will have to wait until she's ready to pee.

Another example. I was with my friend recently when she did a pregnancy test. She told me that she wanted to do a second test but that she didn't gave any pee left. That she would have to wait for a couple of hours and then do a second one

I mean, that's not taking into account the days we're at work, at home, abroad etc and not out in public places generally. Nor the number of times we're out in public but have prepared and don't need to change our protection, or maybe only bleed lightly anyway. Nor the women who don't have periods either for medical or contraceptive reasons (e.g. hormonal coil). And so on.

Nor the number of times we are in public, do need to change, but want to use the loo as well anyway (which does appear to be most people).

Mostly you can squeeze a bit out. Even if you can't the idea of deliberately removing the option from yourself by choosing a glorified cupboard instead of a toilet to change in is just daft.

Odd, that post seems far less angry than sone of yours have been. Are you OK?

Actually going by your posts about bladder timings not matching tampon changes I'm quite worried about your fluid intake too. It's normal that most of the time although your bladder might not be full enough to be the reason to find a loo, you would certainly be able to pee comfortably and "reset the clock" as it were should you happen to have popped in to change san pro. That's why lots of posters are saying that of course they pee while they are there. Does this really not happen for you - you flip from nothing at all to need to go without a long period where it's kind of optional?

Why would I say that in my title when that's not what I meant.

'Like I'm the only one that's ever had periods'.

Eh? I've been talking about other women and their periods including an article where I saw women say that period facilities need to be improved at festivals.

"We didn't need to know all that".?

All that. What , I mentioned the word tampon. Its not a bad word

It's strange how some women can't seem to bear women mentioning their periods at all.

Your posts are certainly batshit. And I'm not angry about periods either.
