To be annoyed at the lack of bathrooms

Applecharm25 · 20/01/2025 13:39

I have my period. I can feel that i need to change my tampon.

I'm out walking round my city. There are no public bathrooms anywhere near me.

I see a sign for a bathroom in a small shopping centre near me. I walk in. The bathroom is actually in a shop. I'm told that the bathroom is only available for paying customers.

So now I have to get in a long queue and wait further and buy something while I really need to change my tampon.

Surely there should be better toilet services available.

No doubt that if we're going to add more public facilities for women's needs, toilets will be more useful than cubicles only. BUT some of us are just sharing our experiences, that sometimes we will not be using toilets to change our tampons. I honestly don't see why this suggestion would bother people so much. If it's not useful for you, that's fine, you wait for the toilets.

I'm just agreeing with OP here that if we can get anything extra, on top of what we already have, this would be a good idea if a full toilet is not an option.

It's actually sad and funny that be it toilets or cubicles, most likely we won't get any. Yet we are angry about a thoroughly hypothetical scenario.

It really is just pure maths. More spaces for people to change sanitary products => shorter queues.

Women haven't said my idea is unrealistic.

Women on this page, have said that they're with me on this.

Can you read? Go back and read. It's right there.

Edited

I think like maybe two people, including you, agree with you? Certainly fewer than the women who've said no, that wouldn't work for me thanks. Weird you are only counting one side.

Thing is, unless you are going to take spaces out of the existing ladies (making most women even less well served), your grand idea means finding more space, building new facilities and plumbing in sinks at the very least, for something that is only going to suit a small number of women and even them only for a few days to a week a month. At which point I'd say if someone is suddenly prepared to find the space and money to build and plumb additional period facilities that will serve a subset of the women, why not go the whole hog and just add more women's loos that will benefit any woman any time of the month and at any stage of her life?

I agree with this. If the space for these changing cubicles exists, then put toilets in them.

Suit a small number of women for a few days a month? All Women have their period at different times of the month.

So on any one day there will be loads of women on their periods going in to use public toilets.

It might not suit you. I personally would like the option. I feel it would be easier

what's the point of your thread @Applecharm25 if you don't tell us which city it is- if only to avoid it!

There's no way you can be identified as there will be zillions of women in any given city using a tampon!

Come on- where are you? 😀 If this is genuine, why won't you say? (Unless you have and I've not seen it.)

Nope.

First rule of safety- don't give your location to an Internet stranger.

As a side note, switching to a moon-cup is a game changer. Typically they need emptying every 8 hours, so reduces the problem by about half and is kinder to the planet and saves money.

Applecharm25 · 20/01/2025 22:12

Apart from periods.

There definitely needs to be more toilets in public, in general.

There aren't enough. I was actually out with a friend a couple of weeks ago and she said she nearly wet herself trying to find a toilet.

How do you think anyone can identify or find you?

One woman using a tampon in some city in the UK....hmm, let me think....

If this was genuine and you wanted to alert other women, or even be advised where there is a loo, you'd say, surely?

But adding space that a very small minority of people would use isn't a benefit when that space could be something all could benefit from because it could be used for BOTH things

That's my choice.

The vast majority of women prefer to pass urine when they're changing pads or tampons, OP.
So your idea isn't going to have much uptake.

That wasn't my point.

I said "why do you care what other people call the bathroom /toilets".

Can you say why you care - what other people call it?

Edited

I care because I do not think you understand British signs, if you expect toilets and loos to be signposted as ‘bathrooms’ in general locations.
But, personally, I really don’t care as I think you are really trying to take the piss with normal British signage.

OP you’ve thrown us all with the use of the word bathroom 😂 it’s a toilet or if you’re asking in a cafe etc you say where are the ladies. A toilet is what you’re after not a bathroom! No baths or showers that’s a bathroom ! But yeah I agree there needs to be more toilets but I just find a pub/ McDonald s etc and plan it abit

Another similiar point to this thread.

I remember reading an article online a while ago. In it, a woman wrote that their needs to be much better period facilities at music festivals.

She said its so hard to have your period at a festival as the portaloos are in such a terrible state, and also have extremely long queues.

Honestly for a weekend festival I'd just wear period pants, put the used ones in a nappy bag and wash them when I got home. Was the article you read quite old, from before period pants became popular?

It's obvious why anyone is asking.

Giving your location doesn't mean anything - no one can find you.

Presumably you don't live in the city where there are no loos or you'd have known that before you went there. It wouldn't surprise you would it, if it was your home town.

But as this is about a lack of facilities in a town in the UK, it is very odd not to mention it.

You don't want to say because it's obvious - people will come along and say there are numerous loos you could be accessing.

I love the grandiose 'Vast majority'. Have you spoken to all the women in the UK then?

Speak for yourself.

Do you think there should be more public toilets available for people ?

Your thread was reported many time as being a troll. MNHQ has given you the benefit of the doubt. But the way you wrote and what you wrote didn't appear genuine.

Most people would just say where they were. It's not a big deal.

No it wasn't old.

From talking to my friends, I think people have different experiences with period pants.

Some people soak through them quickly.

Other people can wear them for hours without a leak.

Omg it's absurd to pester the OP about her address!!! Why is it relevant? Are you going to look up the town and point out "Oh actually, there are x number of public toilets and cafes per y area, so OP you're wrong, we don't need more public toilets"??
