To not replace the bottle of wine?

foreveralmost · 20/01/2025 10:34

I live with two other housemates, one stored a bottle of wine in side door of the fridge. As I opened the fridge it fell out and smashed.

I didn’t open the fridge roughly, I opened it normally, She saw me do it. I obviously cleaned it up and apologised - but I was just the unlucky one who happened to open the fridge.

She has now text me to say could I pick her up a new bottle on the way home ..

I will never reveal the price of the wine.

Agree, it’s irrelevant

Have you decided to stick to your guns and not replace the wine or cave in to keep the peace/ maintain some semblance of a relationship

No one is saying ex-DWine cost £5 or £6. They're saying replace it with a £5 or £6 bottle of wine.

Yes this.

I will never reveal the price of the wine.

The drama!

OK, if it’s a cheap bottle (£10 or less), you’re being very tight and petty.

If it’s a more expensive bottle, you should feel even more obliged to replace it imo.

spotddog · 20/01/2025 13:05

It's happened to me. Opened fridge door as normal and bottle fell out. Only thing I can add is bottom door shelf had been replaced and may not have been as deep as previous despite purchasing from manufacturer.

Where do people find wine for £5-6?

stayathomer · 20/01/2025 13:06

I think it’s mad it fell out and your reaction wasn’t’oh god I’m so sorry, I’ll grab you another one!’ You break something, you offer to pay!

Most food shops...

purplespink · 20/01/2025 13:08

@spotddog Aldi, Lidl, Home Bargains, Tesco Clubcard.

Is that a serious question? Most food shops, supermarkets, corner shops...

I will never reveal the price of the wine.

One for the mn history books- great statement! (I’m assuming that means it was extortionately priced!!!)

Blushingm · 20/01/2025 13:11

If someone parked in a stupid place and you bumped their car......would you refuse to pay and say it was their fault?

PointsSouth · 20/01/2025 13:12

There are two sorts of people in the world.

The type who think, "Who's to blame?"

And the type who think, "How can I make this better?"

The first type ask the question simply to make sure that it's not them. Which is what you're doing.

However, regardless of the answer, you could still ask the second question - and the answer to that is to buy a bottle of wine.

Lol. You sound like you're really easy to live with...

Catza · 20/01/2025 12:57

I deduced this amount based on the level of maturity of your comments. Young people generally don't have half empty bottles of expensive wine stored in the fridge because they usually can't afford expensive wine and because connoisseurs of expensive wine wouldn't store it open in the domestic fridge.

No where did I say the bottle was open.

Wasn’t this already said?

If you can’t understand how the situations are not the same then I can’t help you.

Just replace the bloody wine, like any decent person would!
Unless of course you're a wind-up merchant.

BarbadosItsCloserThanYouThink · 20/01/2025 13:18

You have to live there, it's worth replacing it for less than a tenner to keep the peace.

housethatbuiltme · 20/01/2025 13:19

Shes lucky you weren't injured, if so it would legally be her fault for improper storage not your fault for using a shared item in the correct and designated way.

You do not have x-ray vision so know way to know prior that there was a risk, it was basically a booby trap.

Other posters are wrong that the item was 'entrusted in your care' it was left inappropriately and dangerously in a shared space that you had right to use and lacked awareness of because it was placed in a position hidden from view until it was too late.

Catza · 20/01/2025 13:19

foreveralmost · 20/01/2025 13:13

No where did I say the bottle was open.

They wouldn't store it in domestic fridge in either case. That's what wine fridges are for. My comment about your level of maturity stands.

Blushingm · 20/01/2025 13:20

@foreveralmost how are they not similar?

Wine was fine til YOU opened the door. Others had opened the door I assume and wine survived.

Car parked in stupid spot - fine you you came along and bumped it. Mothers hadn't but you did

Comparable principle

paddlinglikecrazy · 20/01/2025 13:20

I don’t know why you’re asking Op. you clearly won’t be replacing it as you don’t want to.
Pointless asking really.

Blushingm · 20/01/2025 13:20

@Catza - I agree

TheBoysAndTheBallet · 20/01/2025 13:20

You need to fight CFs with passive aggression OP! Reply "Oh sure, if you need a new bottle before you can get to the shops yourself I can pick one up for you. Just transfer the money over to me and I'll get one on my way home. 🙂"

Someone doesn’t understand the London housing market

I fear you will become all too familiar with the London housing market if you don’t pay up.

Your housemates will begin to resent you more and more for not replacing what you broke (regardless of your intention) and your living situation will degrade until you are either searching for a new place to live or new housemates.

Only you can determine if the hassle and agro is worth the unspecified cost of a bottle of plonk.

Jungfraujoch · 20/01/2025 13:23

It may have been a silly place to put it but out of courtesy I’d just replace it.
